Rachel, I know that perhaps this is going to be hard to do, but you really have to tell someone, such as your friends parents that this is going on. Your friend may get mad, but listen, my best friend killed herself a year and a half ago, and I still miss her incredibly. I didn't know that she thought about it, but if there was anything I could do to save her life, I would have. A mad friend is better than a dead friend, and giving away valuable things is telling you that your friend is serious. I would do anything to have my best friend back, and even if telling would have made her hate me, that would be a lot easier to live with than losing her. It is not easy to watch your best friends casket be lowered into the ground. You have to help. Well I found a site called The DJ at http://www.thedj.com They have several formats to choose from, one being 'Female Artists'. So I clicked in, and wouldn't you know it, they were playing Foolish Games. That was followed by Joan Osborne's 'Right Hand Man', Lisa Loeb's 'Rose Colored Glasses', Mazzy Star's 'Into Dust'. and it continues. The quality isn't exactly CD, but at least RealAudio 3.0 sounds better than 2.0, and the mix is interesting. ttyl, Dan - ------------------------------ DAN STARK danstark@mnsi.net Windsor, Ontario, Canada - ------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 Nov 1996 23:07:35 -0800 From: Jon Akers Subject: Re: [NJC] List Birthday Greetings >Pat Brown wrote: > >>Woo-hoo... She said in her request for help to the list that her friend was "marginally suicidal", but the symptoms she described sounded like he could be VERY close to going through with it. Kurt, concerned lurker and EDA - ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Sun, 1 Dec 1996 00:28:31 -0800 (PST) From: Kurt Jensen To: CornflkGl@aol.com Subject: Re: I need HELP, please. Whoah Rachel, This is Kurt Jensen, and you probably don't know me because i've been in lurk mode for a year or so due to too much else going on, but I had to respond to this. I'm a Registered Nurse (in addition to other things). When we had our training in Psychiatric nursing, I learned a lot about suicidal behaviors. Your friend is exhibiting very strong symptoms that demand some action. Early on, someone who is suicidal might tell someone like you that they've thought about commiting suicide, may be depressed, etc. Maybe they've even attempted suicide. There is kind of a natural progression of warning signs, and I don't remember it exactly from my training but the further into the cycle this is, the more some outside intervention (i.e. medical care, direct supervision, counseling, 24 hour watch) becomes necessarry. You already know he's been contemplating it. The fact that he's leaving valuable keepsakes, prized possesions with you and your friend would indicate that he's trying to tie up lose ends and is probably likely to attempt suicide soon! I'm very serious. Especially that he then plays it off by saying he just needed to "clean his room". This is very troubling. He obviously cares very much about you and your friend and is trying to give you his prized possessions to look after when he is gone, which could be very soon if you don't intervene. Has he told you a method of how he might commmit suicide, mentioned a date or place (all other strong warning signs). Obviously Rachel, one person cannot make another person live if they are determined to end their life. However, hopefully you still have a chance to intervene. This sounds definetly serious enough that he needs medical attention and close supervision. There are such things as involuntary holds, where the person can be taken in at a mental health unit in a hospital against their will, but for their own good, for a short time (starts with 72 hours). This sounds drastic, but your friend sounds like he could be at that point. By commiting him, you bring in constant supervision and the assessment and care from a professional with lots of training, and no confusing emotional attachments that someone such as you might have. Doctors could assess him and decide what kind of care he needs. Please consider this. You may feel like this is betraying him, but he needs help. Show him you care. Good luck. Please keep me informed. I now have a night hospital job that allows me to check e-mail all night, so I will reply back. My thoughts are with you...you've got a tough situation, and your friend really needs your help. TM basically pays nothing (.25/ticket) to the retailer for being in their store. The money used to pay for the person behind that counter selling you tickets does not come from TM but from the retailer (blockbuster, tower, etc). I have to deal with them on a daily basis and they are the biggest jerks I have ever had to deal with. If a customer has a problem they basically tell me to tell them it's too bad. I have to tell them! About the Pearl Jam thing, last thing I heard was that PJ gave up because they were having a hard time booking venues. TM has contracts with most of the big promoters such as Avalon and Bill Silva who in turn have contracts with all of the major venues. Pearl Jam was forced out. When they tried to book at alternate venues things always came up tp prevent it. In one instance the local Sherrif's dept. said that they couldn't provide adequate security and so the show was cancelled. When the show was rescheduled it was at a different venue and tix were sold through TM. So yes, TM does have a monopoly and nobody seems to care. My advice to everyone out there who wants to scr*w them like theyv'e been scr*wing us to buy your tickets directly from the venue where the show is being held. There is NO service charge and TM gets NONE of the money!!! -Joe BRADLEY C. Does anyone know a national suicide prevention hotline number ? I was also thinking of things I can say to ihm, since lots of people told me that I should give him things to do and look forward to. Should I tell him I got him a really great Christmas present that he would love ? The thinking behind this is he'd stick around just to find out what it was, or at least out of guilt that I had something for him.... And I hope those of you who aren't religious don't take offense ( I'm not too religious either ) but those of you who are, please pray for him. I *hope* that had something to do with it at least :) I have no idea what the problem is because I'm still getting the list mails *shrug* hmmmmmm *so* I'll email the both of you, and anyone else who wants to get in touch with me so y'all can just reply to a message, and if *that* doesn't get to me well, I guess I'm just not gonna get any email :( Angel Cole, who *thought* his email is lfortner@prairie.nodak.edu ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 Dec 1996 17:10:42 -0600 (CST) From: Andrew Vernon Subject: NJC: Re: Answers.... Clearly that is undefined. I think a much more important question is: why does my dog order me to kill? It's not as if I've done anything to him. It's not as if I even have a dog. .. /Alexander "too short to be the perfect son-in-law" Stamou ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 01 Dec 1996 20:45:25 -0500 From: Crunch Subject: NJC: Giving Thanks =) hi all!! =) i've been watching the chatter about seasonal depression and the such. fact of the matter is that there are many reasons for this so- called seasonal depression. truthfully though, it is a bit early for sun-related vitamin deficiency to be setting in. depression at this time of the year is more centered around loneliness and stress. all of us are busier and have more on our platters than we did 3 months ago. and we are spending more time inside due to the cold. for many of us this means that we are a little more withdrawn, without as much direct support from our close friends. this begins to take its toll, especially when pressures and activites begin to rise the year ends. this means holiday events, end-of-the-year reports at work, and finals in school. =) so stress is going up while emotional support is going down. and this is what leads to depression at this time of the year. it affects all of us. the ways to deal with all the hub-bub and anxiety vary with each of us. a few suggestions: --take time out for yourself. do some- thing with yourself. especially on a nice day. be happy with yourself, all by yourself. --remember, tommorow is a whole new day. and hell, in a few weeks it will be a whole new year! --learn. learn from everything, especially hardships. learn from the past, change the future! --you made it through winter last year. and then there was summer again! you'll make it through winter this year and summer will come again! (this is meant figuratively, and literally) =) it seems there is alot of down EDAs out there. overwhelmed? lonely? go ahead post to the list, let us know that you're having problems. we can help! the hardest thing is asking for help, but once you do help comes from all. so, go ahead, vent on the list, let it out. let's become one big support group! (those of you who are anti-NJC, subscribe to news list now!) =) i have just made it through the most difficult year of my life, 1996. i have kicked a serious drug habit, moved 1300 miles, left all my friends, suffered a huge finacial blow, and went through several deaths. you know what? i am ten times the person i was a year ago, and pretty fucking proud of it! there is always an end to the tunnel, otherwise it wouldn't be called a tunnel. please know, all of you, that this list and more specifically the angels on it, helped me through. i am alive, very happy, and in total control of my life! that is what i gave thanks for a few days ago on Turkey Day and what i give thanks for every day, because its really cool and a year ago, i didn't think it possible! everything works out in the end! =) thank you everyone! and THANK YOU, JEWEL! =) Love~life!
