But having grown up here I can tell you that celbrating El Cinco De Mayo with my mexican friends makes perfect since. Just as much since as when they help be celebrate the 4th of July. When I was a kid I went to John Fujioka's house for a Japanese New Year party and he came over for Christmas. When my parents-in-law castrated their calves their Jewish neighbor put on his yamulcha (sp) and blessed the event. Contrary to what you say, ours is a most unique culture in its ability to incorporate so many diverse ideas from around the world and maintain its integrety. Or maybe the sister has been having big problems that have been weighing on his mind, worrying him to death. Some horrible news. Or some deep afamily secret he hadn;t known. Or was it something silly, perhaps? Like she told him the lyrics to a song, and now he can;t get them out of his head forthe life of him. Yeah I'd like to know too. Just saw Jewel in Vail. They don't let her talk much. She doesn't look like she's very comfortable or happy. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Nov 1996 21:20:11 EST From: telliamed@juno.com (Pat Brown) Subject: [NJC] List Birthday Greetings Woo-hoo... I finally got this program working right so I can't wait to start using it. (If any of you feel like hearing me blabber about techie programming stuff just let me know.) Okay, it was mentioned a while ago that we should have some sort of birthday greetings on the list. I thought it was a great idea (I actually thought of it way back when I did that census thing.) but Amelie, who had brought it up, had to go somewhere. Anyway, I've decided to pick it up and carry it on the way I had originally thought of it. (Okay, I admit, I stole the idea from another list I'm on.... but they don't have any exclusive rights on it so I think it's okay.) Anyway, here's how it'll work. At the beginning of each month I will make a post with all of the birthdays for that month. That's it, simply, ne? Well, I've made it a little fancier; the particular greeting for each person can be personalized, so you can have it say whatever you like. To complicate matters even more (for me, at least), I've made a program to spit out the greetings ready to be sent to the list, and cross-referenced with the current subscribers. I must be really sick to make something as simple as saying, "Happy Birthday" so darn complicated. So, to get to the pink, fleshy heart of the matter, when you send me your birthdate you can make my job a lot easier by doing it like this: 9-19 telliamed@juno.com "Happy Birthday to me!" So, when September comes around there'll be a line that looks like this: 9/19 - Happy Birthday to me! That it, please note that your e-mail address and real name are not included in the greeting. If you want them there, you have to write it yourself in the quotes. Your e-mail address is there so I can check it with the list and when you unsubscribe from the list, I won't bother the list with birthday greetings for you (since you won't be here to recieve them). Of course, we'll want to wish a happy birthday to people who aren't on the list, well I've made accomodations for that (ain't I smart... don't answer that). So, there could be an greeting: 5/23 - You know who. ;) which would appear in my data file as: 05-23 * "You know who. ;)" As you can see, I just use a '*' in place of the e-mail address, so that's how you can send greetings to people not on the list. BTW, the particular greeting for the above person should be something good, so why don't we discuss what it should be on the list. So, if I haven't confuddled the issue too much, let's get those greetings in. It's too soon for me to have a greeting list out for December, so it'll officially start January. If you have any questions, let me know. If you think this is a wonderful idea that shouldn't go unrewarded, send cash to Pat Brown, 1013 Dale St, Staunton, VA 24401. At the beginning of each month I will send a message to the list that gives a birthday greeting to everyone with a birthday that month. Each greeting will just be the date, and a greeting message of your choice. Your name and e-mail address are not automatically shown, so if you want people to know just who it is that's having a birthday, be sure to put your name in your greeting. If the birthday greeting is for someone who's not subscribed to this list (loose-mail or digest) then instead of their e-mail address just put a '*'. Once again, the format is: mm-dd "" And finally, if you don't know who's birthday is May 23rd, go read the FAQ. - ----- telliamed@juno.com (...The Birthday Nazi) ###All opinions expressed are yours. Hey everyone, The list is incredibly quiet tonight, even quieter then it ever was during JewelSTUCK '96 (for all the angels left behind). I'm sure there are a lot of webmasters on this list that could probably answer that question, but since none of them are on a computer right now, I guess that leaves little ol' me (so far it's the first perk I've found being trapped in my dorm room with only a dozen other people on campus and being away from my family for the first time during Thanksgiving weekend, but I digress). You can link sounds and movies from your page as you would any other file or address. For example, let's say you have a WAV file called 'boohoo.wav'. To have people access it, you would link it as follows: Listen to me cry The same goes with movie files such as QuickTime or MPEG. Depending on how the user's browser is set up and configured, a couple of different things could happen. If the user has a browser with the appropriate plug-in, then the browser will automatically play the sound or movie within itself. If the browser does not have the needed plug-in, then the user is often prompted with the option of saving the file to the hard disk (much like downloading a shareware file from an FTP site) and then using another application to play it. If what I'm saying doesn't make sense, and you need to actually look at the source code, a nice and relevant example of a site that has movies is Albert Wang's "Jewel Kilcher Quotations and QT's" at . Another site you could look at is Vikram's MIDI-Fest at . There, he has a page which uses a midi file as background music. To do so he uses the EMBED tag: SRC is used to locate the file, WIDTH and HEIGHT are the size the browser gives the plug-in (usually in the form of a control panel like window; in this case a window would not show up), AUTOSTART is used to tell the browser to whether or not to automatically load the sound when the page is accessed, and LOOP tells the browser to whether or not play the file continuously. Vikram Pant also has the BGSOUND tag on his page: I'm not sure if Internet Explorer recognizes the EMBED tag (it was one of Netscape's own inventions) so that is probably why BGSOUND is on there as well (I think it was Microsoft's own tag). If you want to you can "borrow" sounds from other places and use it as background music as well. On my homepage, I've included this line: And it access Radiohead's Creep from Vikram's site everytime my page loads. I hope everything is understandable.
