You see, we had paid for reserved seating, just in case we got there late. We got there early and the reserved seating turned out to be the back row in the loft. But since we were like in the first twenty or thirty in the place we decided to sit on some stools on the right hand side of the stage, if you're viewing it from the stage. Well we looked around and didn't notice anyone. Nancy had only eaten two bowls of ice cream that day ( bad move for someone with lactose intolerance) so I went to get her dinner keeping my eyes open for any EDA's who might be there. All along Nancy didn't feel so hot and after eating it didn't help. So before I could even finish one beer and before the first band had played we had to leave. The third time I have missed a Rugburns' concert. Needless to say I was bummin'. I really wanted to meet all of you. So we were at our hotel in downtown San Diego by 9:00. The next day left a small glimmer of hope. Nancy felt a little better but I wasn't going to get my hopes up. We shopped we ate and then took a nap. When Nancy woke she gave the okay. We were heading to the Casbah to see the Rugburns. We got there at eight and they told us they wouldn't open until 8:30 and the rugburns wouldn't play until 11:00 or 11:30. More waiting. We headed over to Java Joe's for a cup of coffee and then turned right around and headed back to the Casbah. We were there by 9:00. Nancy still feeling okay. We sat through two bands both playing what I can best explain as urban rockabilly. I don't know maybe I'm labeling them incorrectly. Finally, the Rugburns were on stage and I was mesmerized. How Steve Poltz can concentrate when everyone is talking is beyond me. Don't get me wrong. There were a lot of people there to see them but there were a lot of drunk people just being loud. He did YWMFM. He did Kiss Your Ass. He puts a lot of himself into his concerts. Towards the end we moved on to the dance floor. To keep Nancy safe from the slam dancing I had to slam to Take the Skinheads Bowling. I hadn't slam danced since college. When the concert was over Nancy approached him and gave him a cross just like the one she gave Jewel and talked to him for a few minutes. We then left. Since I had a few to drink Nancy drove. We made it two blocks before Nancy realized we should have bought the new tshirts for her girls who couldn't attend since it's a bar. We illegally parked, so I stayed with the car and Nancy ran in. I closed my eyes for a minute and then Nancy comes back to the car with two tshirts and Steve. So for about 5 minutes we talked to him while Nancy told him what to write on the tshirts. So I asked him if he enjoyed doing the video and he said yeah that it was great and that he enjoyed it. I didn't hear him but Nancy swears that he said that they were so happy shooting the video together. I don't know how it came up but he said he'd come play for my kids at school when he gets back from touring. He has a good friend who teaches high school at a catholic high school and he says he plays for them all the time. The guy is pretty amazing. I felt so at ease talking with him. I could go on and on but I'll spare you. Oh yeah the JC. Steve said that Jewel was planning on being there but she didn't show. Keep up the good work. Let me review some important parts of this for newbies. First of all the purpose of these posts in to encourage angels to call their local radio stations and request YWMFM in order to help Jewel get the airtime she deserves. It is important not to disclose ourselves as EDAs or fans of Jewel in anyway. We are fans of music. We want to appear to the radio stations as a random sample of the general public so that they think that YWMFM is what the people want to hear. The reason I specify this is because a while back Mike suggested that we flood the VH1 webpage with requests for YWMFM and more then half of us disclosed ourselves as EDAs. People are going to take that real seriously(sarcastically). Please help our friend get the airtime she deserves to continue to live her dream. Now there are one of two ways to react > to this. Notice to all North Americans: Licensing of music recordings is often done on a per-country/per-continent basis, so even though Atlantic may not license Jewel's recordings within the U.S. and Canada, they may in other countries. Most songs on an American compilation are at least 3 past their chart peaks. A new trend is releasing relatively new music on a comp album (like those Dance Mix USA discs). > 1)Great. Jewel is getting more exposure, even if it is in such a tacky way > and go, 'wow is this cool Jewel person?' Well, these packages are valuable because they generate residual royalties. You wouldn't want Jewel to end up back in that Volkswagen again would you? Also, they _do_ maintain a person's profile in the media. Because of licensing and compilation albums, almost-forgotten KC and the Sunshine Band are touring again. (Jewel's milage may vary) > 2)how sad that she is viewed as being mainstream enough to make it onto > such a shoddy compilation of music. Well, I don't particularly like the use of terms like "mainstream" and "alternative," because they mean nothing. You can apply both terms to any artist today, like this: Even though my local Coconuts files Jewel in the alternative section because of her approach to her music, Entertainment Weekly insists she's merely mainstream because of her eye-pleasing new video. > I think I feel a little both ways. And that's perfectly OK. You don't have to sell your soul to be successful. Consider Matt Groening, creator of _The Simpsons_. The show succeeded in ratings, critical review and merchandising, while staying true to itself. Groening makes nearly all of the licensing decisions regarding the show to maintain its integrity. Jewel can sell a lot without selling out. She said she wanted to be able to make a life for herself singing and playing guitar, and that's exactly what she's done. - -- Andrew Vernon avernon@scott.net ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V1 #814 ***************************
