Yes. (Embarassed Silence. Greg stares at shoes. After an animated conversation with them in which Greg is heard to mutter "No, I won't, I won't, it's inhuman!" Greg looks up again at his audience.) Hi! I just joined this list, and have been reading digests for the last few days. Thought I'd introduce myself and maybe add something off the topic of Sean, but on the subject of Jewel...sorta. Close enough. Here's my thing. I noticed Scott sharing the first part of his story, and got to thinking...for me, a measure of music (ie, whether I like it or not) is how much the singer "speaks" to me. Having subscribed to this list, you might guess that Jewel is one of those people (what? This isn't the Bush list?!). Anyway. I'm a writer. Not published, but want to be. And often I find music and certain people just...inspire me. Listening to Jewel often makes me look at parts of myself I often try to ignore. Has anyone else found this? Has anyone found Jewel's music, or anyone else's for that matter, inspiring them in creative endeavors? I know personally I am often just darn afraid to "expose" myself -- it was only this last year that I started sharing stuff I was writing with people, because it was too "personal." Jewel is a person that I immensely admire simply because she does share, in song and poetry. I'm in awe of that, because I know how hard it can be. So, anyone? Care to share? Ever been inspired to write a story or poem because you just listened to Jewel? Or done anything else because her music, or music of anyone you like, made you think of something you tried to ignore, forced you to confront it? Or read a book that did the same? As for book recommendations, I heartily suggest going out and buying yourself a copy of Charles De Lint's "Memory and Dream." It's about...memory...and dreams. Gee, the title suddenly makes sense. ;-) Seriously, though, it's a beautiful book, and actually has a lot to do with the creative process, and living, and the pain of living. Thanks for listening to a newbie! By the way -- Scott, please do share the rest of your story!
