Most of the time commercialization leads to a much lower quality in art. No Doubt to me is a GREAT commercial band, and they have and will sell a ton of albums, but it gets really frustrating when you see bands go further than the people who's coat tails they rode in on and/or stole their image from. Meanwhile great ska bands like The Toasters, Secret Cajun Band, and MU330 have to suffer while their music is turned into trivialized pop music with a skippy guitar. Hey, newbies need to vent sometimes too y'know :P Cole ------------------------------ From: chelseahawk@kktv.com Date: Wed, 13 Nov 1996 18:16:04 -0500 Subject: Jewel News: From The BBs-A Thanks idea to Jewel & This is not Chelsea, this is her mom.I love the JewelStock tapes; Jewel is an incredibile singer, performer and most of all, writer. Her unique style and showmanship, her obvious ease in front of a crowd, her kindness to her fans is a huge breath of fresh air at a time when music has become one copy after another, each artist boxed ever more tightly into a catagory for radio airplay.;As a mom, I worry sometimes about what influences my daughter: since Chelsea is a Jewel addict I worry not at all. She is such a generous artist, so wide ranging in the pure force of her personality as felt in her music that she truely is a gem. I want to thank Jewel for her music and for making it so accessible to her fans. Some other artists started out caring more about their fans and music than the money ( Bruce Springsteen comes to mind; he used to open his concerts saying " start up those recorders, it's time to rock"- this was before mass adoration, and getting ripped off by management ) . Jewelstock in it's self was a wonderful idea, but to have a network to distribute these masterfully produced tapes ( which I'm sure took great dedication and not just a bit of hard work) was absolutely charitable; nay, totally altruistic.; Of course, in all honesty I must report that the volume at which the tapes are played is often too much for my aging ears, but then I have to remember that I did the same as a teenager. Actually I still listen to music at ear bleed levels, but only when I'm alone. Anyway,my thanks to one and all involved in the production of Jewel Stock. I'm really, really impressed! OK, I have a lot of favorite lyrics of Jewel's. It's probably because she's a poet, and poetry put to music appeals to all of my senses. Here's a few that stand out at this moment: "She was a dancing girl, dancing girl, she danced so fast, so fine, and she'd dance around with her eyes shut to see the stars in her mind... a spinning Jupiter, a spinning Mars, She herself was just a singing star, a breathing constellation... She was a bright point of light, travelling through the skies of her mind Oh and how she knew the stars, and the map of the human heart..." Star Child Actually, that song is one of my favorites, if not just for the lyrics themselves. I wish I could include the whole song, but... Anyway...I think the lyrics to the duets with Steve Poltz are beautiful expressions of the enlish language, and the harmonies only increase the beauty. For example: "I used to have disfunctional fun, in the cancerous sun, with my co-dependant hon, eatin' greasy-greasy hot dogs on a buttered-up bun..." Silver Lining "I'm outside your window, talking to glass. You throw out some love crumbs, but I got an appetite bigger than that. I'm hungry for somethin', that I can't afford. You dole out out your love light food stamps. Well, I want somethin' more. I'm sick of your food stamp love..." Food Stamp Love So, excuse me if this was long, but it's my birthday, I'm allowed some fun, right? :) Love, Sarah @ # @ # @ # @ # @ # @ # @ # @ # @ # @ # @ # @ # @ # @ # @ # @ # @ # @ # @ # Sarah with an 'h' robeson+@andrew.cmu.edu A palindrome for you to ponder: A man, a plan, a canoe, pasta, heros, rajahs, a coloratura, maps, snipe, percale, macaroni, a gag, a banana bag, a tan, a tag, a banana bag again (or a camel), a crepe, pins, Spam, a rut, a Rolo, cash, a jar, sore hats, a peon, a canal--Panama! ------------------------------ From: Bree A Marchman Date: Wed, 13 Nov 1996 21:45:13 -0800 (PST) Subject: List condensation Hey angels.... I, for one though, find incidents like this to take precedent over a love of music.
