After some unsuccessful searching in bookstores, I bypassed the middleman and just went to the publisher's office in Toronto. Sure enough, they had it and were happy to sell me a copy. The book is called "Mindfire - Dialogues In The Other Future" by Alexander Blair-Ewart. It's a collection of interviews conducted by the author with what he calls "some of the most provocative thinkers and activists in the world today", and includes a chapter with Jewel. Now to be honest, I'm not the most likely person to get into a book about psychology and spirituality, but I always find Jewel's down-to-earth outlook interesting, whether it be in her poetry, music or conversation. Alexander goes beyond the usual interview fare, and avoids many of Jewel's wonderful but well-rehearsed answers known too well to most of us here. This is a discussion about Jewel's philosophy on life, ideals and spirituality, and is pretty much an extension of what she talks about in simpler terms on a regular basis. We hear about Jewel's connection with native Indian culture and spirituality. Her thoughts on society and what the future holds for her generation. Angels and religion. Self-analysis. Humanity. Creativity. I can't paraphrase the chapter, short as it may be, but if you've been following along you'll know the sort of hopeful and observational outlook Jewel puts forth. "I'm excited about my generation. I hope my excitement builds to other people. I think there's a great hopelessness that plagues us, and it really doesn't need to be. I think it's a pretty darn nice time to be alive and to be thinking. We've a lot of luxuries afforded us, and more than enough skills to handle the problems we have. And most importantly, I feel that today we're learning...I think it is a time for kids to take a stand...and make their lives real and sacred to them, and not expecting somebody else to do it for them, and getting mad that nobody else is." Besides Jewel, there are similar interviews with several others in this book. Fritjof Capra, Graham Farrant, Michael Murphy, Paul Watson, Jane Goodall, Terence McKenna, John Anthony West, Tom Harpur, Jean Houston, Oh Shinnah, Starhawk, Lynn Andrews, Marion Woodman, Robert Bly, Jean Shinoda Bolen, Georg Feuerstein, Ram Dass, Adam Crabtree, Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, Taisha Abelar, and Florinda Donner. According to the cover flap, the author is the former publisher and editor-in-chief of Dimensions magazine, and "one of the most erudite exponents of the new conciousness". So if you're interested in psychology and spirituality, it would probably be fascinating brain-candy for you. If just you're dying to learn more about Jewel's outlook on life, then it might be worth it for you too. But at $25, it's not exactly like picking up a magazine for one interview. It's a 6x9-inch softcover, about 350 pages. The publisher says Canadians pay cover price plus GST and shipping in Canadian dollars. Americans just pay cover price in U.S. dollars which includes shipping. Anyone else, I guess you'd have to e-mail them and ask. My copy has a cover price of $24.95, but for some reason the website had it at $19.95 last time I checked. First off, I posted *weeks* ago when YWMFM was first played on Z100. For all of its nonsense, Z100 was one of the first major commercial stations to pick this single up. Not the first, of course. Second, YWMFM is in standard rotation on Z100 right now, which is about once every two hours. A blessing, that; when WWSYS was on once-an-hour rotation I got well sick of it. Better this way than the other, to my mind. In any case, I hear it a couple of times a day when I listen to the radio at work. In my hometown of Knoxville there appeared a story in the local paper that no one could quite figure out. Apperently, at East Town Mall on a sunny afternoon (about 2:00) a tall, dark, man in a long black trenchcoat walked up to some kid eating lunch, jumped on him, and bit him on the neck. He didn't puncture the skin, and when others came to the boys aid, he fled (he disappeared in seconds, and the cops couldn't find a trace of him) It just goes to show....uh...something. I draw the line and say that one group doesn't have a voice at the point where that group says I don't have the right for a voice, be it in the form of denying my right of speech, or be it in the form of denying my right to exist. I am not punishing this group. If they had a channel, and I would be fighting to get it closed, that would be to punish that group. However, if they have no channel, and are asking me for one - which they are - then I have every right, and every obligation, not to give it to them if I feel they will abuse it. We are not talking about people who commited crimes and now regret it, and are trying to find assistance from one another. We are talking about a group which gather to violate other peoples' rights. If we were to give them that channel, we would be just as guilty when that violation occurs. If you know that Mr Smith will murder Mr Black if given the chance, and you sell Mr Smith a gun, and show him the way to Mr Black's house, then you are an accessory to murder. Jewel was/is not in India.....last I heard from Alan B is that he said she may have arrived home from Europe on Sunday. Lenedra has been in India a while, and is/was due home about now (also from info I got from Alan). However, there were only two Americans on the plane, so obviously the odds are astronomical. Like Duff conveys though, I'll rest easier when we know all. I did not mean to worry Duff during our AOL chat last night, it's just that with all the very recent floods in India from the typhoons (2000 dead), the typhoons themselves and then the crash last night, I just wanted to hear that she was home in San Diego and out of there.
