I'm from Florida myself and would love it for Jewel to have JSII here but I know it's probably not going to happen. I'm still regretting not going to JSI but I did have other priorities at the time. It's really quite pointless to be nominating or talking about bringing JSII to anyplace because WE HAVE NO SAY IN IT. We had no say in the location of JSI. It just happenned to be in Bearsville because that's where Jewel was recording the new album (which I can't wait to hear, even though I've probably already heard most of it heh). Basically know matter how many "elections" we have, no matter how overwhelmingly in favor of one place over all others we may be and know matter how many times we start similar threads of people bitching about where JSII should and should not be held... NONE OF US HAVE A SAY. JS was a gift. It was a gift of respect, thanks and perhaps love from Jewel, her mother and I assume other members of her staff for the list's efforts in spreading Jewel around and for continued support of Jewel. It's as simple as that. The location of the concert and the dates where strictly limited to where Jewel was during her recording sessions and when she was there. It's already been said by Jewel and Lenedra thru Hiranya that there are no plans for a JSII and if they ever have one, it probably won't be any time soon. I took that to mean in the next few years... don't even look for one. We were damn lucky to get the first one. If they ever have another, it will undoubtedly be under the EXACT same conditions. They tell us what city and when... someone on the list attempts to book a place. Or something to that effect. Basically I think the whole subject should be ended here and now and never brought up until we are offered the opportunity to hold another JSII. Unless of course someone out there is willing to offer whatever it is Jewel makes per concert appearance to have her in your hometown. Then, by all means, contact Jewel's management and let us know when and where. Yeah, they wear boots and funny clothes, but the closest they've been >to a cow is on that stupid video for CMT. Very very true. I cite Garth Brooks, for example. He has sold many millions of albums throughout his entire career and was probably responsible for launching the "new" country. I knew people, even teenagers and minorities, who did not like country music and still don't, but did own Garth Brooks albums. I, however, uphold that Garth Brooks fits into the loose description of Ben's above. If you go to the library and pick up a back copy of Entertainment Weekly during Garth's most successful time (when the albums In Pieces and Ropin' the Wind were both released), you'll see his albums not only on the country charts but also the Pop charts. The music is not merely by a country boy. In theory, it's pop music wrestled into a country mold. Now, I do not doubt that Brooks has a passion for country music, but I think his music could be even more popular if he lost the hat and boots and played coffee shops. (Hey, sometimes that works!!!) I have listened to Brooks many times. Those who are familiar with his music, examine these songs: "Somewhere Other Than the Night," "The Thunder Rolls," "Learning to Live Again," "If Tomorrow Never Comes," "The Chance," "Every Now and Then"........these songs do not fit in with the rest of the songs on his albums. And guess what? They are his most successful songs. "Friends In Low Places" was the most country-like out of his ten best songs. Brooks has a great ability to write lyrics for his ballads, but his true-to-country songs like "Dixie Chicken"???? Well, I just don't travel where the grass don't grow, baby. Other country artists follow Brooks' road and achieve great success. Tracy Byrd, John Michael Montgomery...even Wynonna a little. Another thing I've noticed is that songs are being simultaneously cut by popular atists and country artists. Take Montgomery's "I Swear" and "I Can Love You Like That." Are these country songs? Also, someone has a song "Heaven Help My Heart" that is also released by Tina Arena in pop. I think country music has abandoned its tradition and tried to share in the wealth of popular music. I don't mean to insult or accuse country for not having emotion, but I grew up with parents who listened to Oak Ridge Boys and Alabama 17 hours a day. But you have to agree that in the last four or five years, country artists have taken creative liberties that many generations of past country artists never did. They may call it innovation...I call it pop. - Mark P.S. Don't worry, this is not a flame. Rather, consider it an opportunity to broaden your horizons. Country isn't as twangy as it used to be. There's plenty of country music today that's closer to folk rock than country. I'm thinking about people like Dwight Yoakum, Kim Ritchie, Shelby Lynne, Shania Twain. I think that Kim Ritchie is fairly close to Jewel, in that she's a great songwriter, a great performer live, a struggling new artist, and plays acoustic guitar. The other stuff you talk about, hunting, line dancing, etc., is sterotypical country, just like kangaroos and koalas are stereotypical Australia. I wouldn't judge your country's music based on what's been exported to the US (Air Supply, the Fixx, Little River Band [although I happen to like LRB]); perhaps you should consider country music.
