Well, folks, if Dole can graciously do it, I can do it... The "Harris for President" campaign has come to the end of its extremely brief run, and I wish Mr. Clinton and the American people the best of luck over the next four years (they're gonna need it!). I appreciate the support you have given me since this morning, when the desperate pleas of my fellow EDAs led me to throw my hat into the political ring. Some have since urged me to run again in the year 2000, but I have decided this would be my lone attempt at the office. My only remaining opportunity would be as a runner-up to the runner-up to the runner-up, etc, should the winner (or runner-up and his runner-up and his runner-up, etc) fail to serve out his/their term(s). Hmmm, Clinton could easily get impeached...Dole can only live so long...Ross could easily be committed...those other guys probably only got their own vote anyway...it could happen. Last man standing gets to run the country! (Lord help us.) So, the next album will not be out until March, and you foreign EDAs are still Jewel-less. Oh well, for a brief, shining moment, we a had a...uhh...a brief, shining moment. The boxes were marked "Ja" and "Nein" so that everybody could see how you voted. "Der Fuehrer", the Brownshirts said, "does not need secrecy". You REALLY don't have to worry about SCMS (the copy-protection thing) unless you are considering to own two DAT decks. The only reason you would be affected is because you are planning to tape DAT to DAT (thereby trying to copy as perfectly as you can, the original tape). AS metioned before, you can buy more equipment to circumvent this, but it's only necessary if you plan on owning 2 or more DAT decks. Copying from DAT to regular cassette is unaffected. The cheapest DAT decks right now are the portable Sony D7(old)/D8(new) Walkman which goes for about $500-$600, the Tascam DA-20 going for $700+ (and it can ignore this SCMS thing), and the Fostex D5 (I'm not sure of the exact model name, but it's virtually the same as the Tascam) going for about $750+. You can always read the FAQ sheet at the Dat-heads web site. I don't remember the address, but you can always search for it. And if anyone is interested in trading tapes (especially DATs), check out my list or drop me a line and I'll send you my list. I miss you folks but I just can't keep up with the list anymore!). Tara McLean captured the interest of many an ectophile when the great Nettwerk compilation _Slowbrew_ came out over one and a half years ago, with a stunning song called "Let Her Feel the Rain". I was one of those smitten 'philes, and for over a year I kept an ear to the ground and periodically inquired about her. So when Dan Stark played me a track from an advance copy of her CD back in July, I was somewhat disappointed, it seemed somewhat overproduced, and well... common. And so when her CD did finally arrive on the shelves officially last month, I gave it only a very cursory listen, thought it was OK but not great and decided to wait for it to hit the used CD racks. Fastforward to last week. Dan tells me Tara is playing a month long residency of Monday night shows at C'est What in Toronto, the tiny venue where I saw Jewel do her residency (and in an odd coincidence, Jewel's shows were also on a Monday night)... a few days later, Dan posts a positively glowing (or glowingly positive?) review of her show opening for Tom Cochrane, much to my surprise. I gather some friends, two of which were veterans of the Jewel residency days, to go and see Tara play the first instalment of her residency at C'est What on Monday night. What a sense of nostalgia! C'est What seemed even smaller and more intimate than I remembered it, and it seemed absolutely incredible that I could ever have seen Jewel perform there, moreover, for free. There were some posters and flyers scattered about, some of which made Tara look so Sarah-esque that one of my friends thought it was a Sarah poster (the effect was compounded by the fact that it was a Nettwerk poster), and others which made her look suspiciously like Jewel. I decided then that if she were to walk up and sit beside me I would not be able to recognize her. First to hit the stage was a local singer-songwriter in the folk mold called Katherine Wheatley who I've been meaning to see for a long time now. She was not incredibly exciting but was good enough to whet our appetites for Tara. After a long delay, Tara finally arrived, and she looked nothing like any of the posters, although she was just as attractive in her own way. From the first note of her incredible voice I knew I was hooked. She stirred in me familiar feelings of staring into the face of impending greatness, ready to burst out of the walls of the intimate little room she was performing in. It was like I was witnessing a historic event, despite the tiny venue and the even tinier crowd inhabiting it. Her stage presence during her songs is very engaging and inviting, she seems very relaxed and natural and smiles a lot, as if there is nothing she would rather be doing than performing for us, which may be true. Her between-song patter lacks the polish and finesse of Jewel but is charming all the same. She played alone, accompanying herself on acoustic guitar and later on a keyboard (when she sat down at the keyboard she said something along the lines of "Okay, don't laugh at me, I'm not great but I don't suck"). I don't recall her ever re-tuning her guitar, which struck me as being a bit odd, having become quite accustomed to Jewel's frequent tunings. I was greatly surprised and a little disappointed that "Let Her Feel the Rain" was the first song. It will also NOT be the first single, it turns out. Anyway, I strained to make comparisons to other artists while she sang, and there was and is one that remains tantalizingly out of reach. Her fellow Atlantic-Canadian, Sarah (Tara is from Prince Edward Island) did come to mind a couple of times, and Tori too, while she was singing a capella. But there is another dimension to her singing, the vocal power she unleashes reminded me of a singer who eludes me completely. Anyway, all too soon her set came to a close, and she left saying, "OK, that's all the songs I can do", and abruptly bounded off the stage. Afterwards I asked her about that and she said that her other songs she needs a band for. I asked if she would be playing with a band for any of her upcoming Toronto shows (in addition to her C'est What residency, she has dates lined up for a Rita MacNeil taping, the Horseshoe, and opening for another great Canadian act, Spirit of the West), and she said that she might get some people together to play those songs. I hope she doesn't play with SOTW, because I can't go to that show and I'll die if I miss her playing with them. Anyway, I urge any and all 'philes and EDAs within striking distance of Toronto to converge on C'est What at least one Monday in the next 3 weeks. Tara McLean is a phenomenal live performer, and she won't be confined to little clubs like C'est What for long.
