Date: Tue, 5 Nov 1996 09:09:09 -0600 (CST) Subject: Re: jewel-digest V1 #737 I have two things to say: 1) I belive Baz Luhrmann's "Romeo & Juliet" deserves an enormous amount of credit. Now, don't get me wrong, it's no artisitic masterpiece, or any of that bunk, but it's still a good flick. FYI: actually, Mercutio is gay, or can be. Shakespeare put that in there to begin with. Also, "gang" fights between the Capulets and Montagues were commonplace. I believe this "R & J" is one of the best modern interpratations of a play ever produced, because it doesn't change the meaning of the play at all. It doesn't matter if they kill each other with rapiers, berettas, or zucchini, for that matter, because they still kill each other, and that's the point. Although I agree that there are many better Shakespearian actors out there, I think Leo and Claire did a decent job. Except for the fact that Claire can't cry. She never could. Her chin-quivering blubbering looks exteremely realistic, but it still looks dumb. Yes, there are lots of things to improve upon in the movie, but there are also lots of things to complement. You don't have to like it, but I'd recommend going to see it. 2) I find this hostility for newbies downright humiliating. And I mean humiliating for the EDA, not for the newbies. Isn't this the type of animosity that Jewel doesn't like, and write songs against? If I may quote, "I'm sensitive, and I'd like to stay that way." Yes, there are alid and invalid reasons for liking Jewel, but please don't persecute someone because they've just heard about her. Everyone has feelings, and those feelings need a real chance to like Her Wonderfulness, Jewel. - --Tim Gavin. ------------------------------ From: toni@indy.net (Toni Dunn) Date: Tue, 5 Nov 1996 10:42:32 -0500 (EST) Subject: NJC:Help me please!!!!! I think we all oughta be thankful Jewel's tune did not appear in this mess of a movie. I'm a Shakespeare lover and was very excited by the updating of R&J to modern times. I mean, that's West Side Story after all, without the poetry. But what this new version has done, in my opinion, has given up the poetry for the posing. Shakespeare's words are muffled amid all the shouting and posturing and costumes and the director in love with his own concept. The story is timeless and it would take a really bad turn to screw that up. But the beauty of Shakespeare's language is gone. The Queen Mab speech is practically unintelligble (as is just about everything Mercutio says) and the actor doing Benvolio isnt a very good actor doing normal dialog let alone Shakespeare. And dont get me started on Leonardo's Romeo. Clare Danes comes off well, and the touches of naming the guns after swords was clever I thought. As far as Juliet offing herself in the manner she does, I found that sequence the best part of the movie. I suppose because I knew it would be over soon. - -steve m ------------------------------ From: GraywolfLA@aol.com Date: Tue, 5 Nov 1996 10:57:54 -0500 Subject: JC: West Coast Gathering; Jewel is Where??? It started two days after the Concert at Boston common (10/13) when I found out that my one year old niece tested postive for lead poisoning after my brother sanded the outside of their house and appearantly dust from the paint drifted into some open windows. This lead to a very hectic week here at my house as my parents were constantly calling to check on her. That lead right into that wonderful flood we had here in the northeast two weeks ago. Although, my house only had some very minor flooding (I live on a hill) my downhill neighbors had as mush a seven feet of water in their homes so most of my free time was spent helping them clean up. Last weekend a friend of my parents was diagnosed with cancer and will be has already started treatment. Then finally, to really put a great ending on the month working in the yard I came down with a severe case of poison ivy. When I say severe I mean I had to lay in bed cover head to toe bye the stuff. For three days my eyes were literally swollen shut. In fact today is the first day I have been out of bed since last thursday. So what does all this mean. One, I owe like twenty people t-shirts. I promise they will all be mailed out by early next week. I haven't even gotten around to cashing most of the checks. Secondly, I owe three or four people tapes. I have them all made it is just know a matter of remembering which ones belong to who and getting them mailed as well. Third, I haven't done anything on the new t-shirt for a while. Hopefully, I will have some news about that very soon as well. Fourth, will all the other problems I have right now, I don't have time to go through the sixty-something digests that accumulated on me so if anything of any major importance took place some one fill me in.
