Writing a song often involves taking a 'hood' off one song and a 'door' often another. Jessica was written first, and since Jessica was never released, she took parts of that song she felt were appropriate and stuck them in the new song Emily. She goes on to say that Foolish Games was the same way. Happily enough, Jewel recorded two version of Jessica during her Woodstock recording sessions: a slower softer version like on Rare angels and a faster rockinger version with the band. Those inside the theater at jewelstock can attest to the coolness of the band version (I heard it while waiting outside and loved it). And Jewel has admitted somewhere that Emily was taken from Jessica. We assume that when she compares writing songs to taking parts from different cars in a junk yard to make a whole new car that this is what she did with Emily/Jessica. Wouldn't it be nice if the newbies told the list how they first were attracted to Jewel? Well, I'm a newbie to this list, only about one-week old now, so I guess I'll tell you my story. Early in the year, I learned about another artist I've grown to love, Joan Osborne. In my quest for obtaining stuff on her, I stumbled upon Jewel. First, it was VH1 Duets with Melissa Etheridge (at the time when I saw the show, I hadn't heard of Jewel and didn't pay much attention to her on the show - I just wanted it for Joan). As I was making tapes of Joan for someone (he's on this list), he told me about Jewel and this list, and about how much mail there was. I still didn't pay much attention. I got to making a video tape of the Joan stuff I had for this guy. Since he had mentioned Jewel I decided to add her Duets appearance on this tape. This is when I really first took notice of Jewel. I just loved "Foolish Games". So, as I kept watching VH1 and kept seeing the WWSYS video, this tune would dance around in my head and it just grew on me. I then re-joined the CD clubs, to get the POY CD among others. So now, I was able to listen to something other than "Foolish Games" and WWSYS. I took this CD to work on several occasions to listen to it while I cranked away on the computer. I then got a couple bootleg tapes and an video tape from someone else (also on this list). Next thing I did was to check the Web sites out. I haven't seen them all yet, but the one I keep going back to is the one on sprynet. I've either read, printed or downloaded most of the articles, lyrics and pictures. Totally informative. And, finally, I decided to subscribe to this list, remembering what that one guy told me. Well, the first day I joined the list I had over 80 messages so I unsubscribed to the list and subscribed to the digest. Now I can just copy the digests to a disk in the morning, take them to work and read them. I'm still not the biggest Jewel fan yet, like some of you are, but I do like her and am intrigued by her style. I may just need more time and more material to listen to. And, thanks to a special someone, I will have a copy of the JS tapes along with some others, so I'll be able to listen to all those non-POY songs that you guys talk about. I'm sure the more I listen to all these tapes, the more I'll love her music. I really believe she'll just get better and better, especially with a full band behind her. A few other notes: I saw Joan and Melissa this year (awesome concerts), but missed out on Jewel because she was with Neil Young (who I don't really like) and it was a weeknight. I wish I had seen her - I would have just left after her performance. Well, maybe next year. Hopefully, she'll be the headliner in a more intimate atmosphere. Also, where I live there's only one radio station that I know of that plays the newer music. They call themselves "progressive radio" where they mix older rock with the newer groups. I don't get to listen to it much - only driving to and from work (the receptions fades at work because I work too far away), so I don't get to hear much of the newer stuff out there. I have to rely on other sources. I used to be able to watch VH1 but my wonderful cable company just replaced it with another channel last month (and I don't like MTV too much). By the way, isn't it time for VH1 to have Jewel as the Artist of the month? If they do, I'll have to find someone to make a tape of all the good stuff. And speaking of Melissa, she and her pregnant girlfriend will be on 20/20 with Baba Wawa this Friday night. ABOUT THE SECRET SANTA EXCHANGE: Some people in their heart would probably love to do something like this, but may have reservations about it such as having a problem with the dollar amount, or not feeling comfortable with exchanging gifts with someone they really don't know and so on. But, for those who would love to exchange gifts, or for that matter just give a gift, but don't want to participate in this particular exchange, why not think about giving a gift to a needy child in your community this Christmas through your church or some other sponsored program. Now wouldn't that really make you an EDA to this child. For those who would still participate in the secret Santa exchange, you could still do the same thing. After all, Christmas is more about giving than receiving. :) Well, I hope I didn't bore the hell out of you. I know this was long, but I had fun writing this at work. If you made it this far, thanks for reading it. Take Care All! However, I don't think it's US that should "move on" > and form a new list, perhaps it's the lurkers who should. They don't > add anything to this list anyway. :( I did word that last sentence very, very badly. I AM so sorry. I had a "Bad EMAIL Day".....yes Brenda, I did. (Brenda, a self admitted lurker/occasional poster asked me such in a private EMAIL) It was not meant as derogatory, but it certainly reads that way. :( And I got some private flames as a result. (my own d*mn fault) I violated one of the "EMAIL tips" that Dennis Harris taught me: Write it, sleep on it, re-read it, edit it, post it. It's good advice.....I didn't sleep on it nor edit it. I hope this clarifies my opinions and won't make things worse. Semi-lurkers (who post occasionally) DO add to this list, and I was not directing my comment to them. De-lurkers DO add to this list, and I was not directing it at them either. :) *Anyone* who posts to the list "adds" to it. It was to the lurkers who *never* post or post once or twice every six months or so. I cringe, but still have to say it, they don't "add" to the list. However, before anyone gets mad at me please realize I am NOT saying they are less of a Jewel fan or less of anything, for that matter. What I am saying is is that they don't actively contribute. It's not a mean statement. It's a neutral statement. If you don't EVER post, then you don't contribute. Non-adders DON'T subtract or detract, they are just there....neutral. Just because I said they don't add, that doesn't mean they are bad. They aren't, of course. Look at it in this manner. Let's take The United Way as an example. (For you foreign EDAs, The United Way is one of America's largest charitable organizations) Those that contribute either monitarily or with voluntary deeds contribute. They "add" to the effort. They have a right to say what they want about The United Way and to be heard too. Those that don't contibute at all. While they obviously don't subtract, they just don't "add" to the effort neither. Therefore, they don't have a viable right to complain about how the United Way is run. (Please, no flames about the United Way opinions etc. ;) Nobody "subtracts" from the Jewel mailing list. The only one I ever saw that I would categorize as a "subtractor" from the list was....dare I bring it up?....the "Mad Jewel Bomber" we had last July. Boo....hiss....boo!! Bad Mad Jewel Bomber!! Bad!! In closing, I think we all just have to: a) live with the 3 list options we have now, jewel, jewel-digest & jewel-news b) please, please put NJC in the subject if it is NJC. This IS really a good idea and courteous to lurkers of all kinds. (SJC for "some Jewel Content"?) c) Perhaps, put RSS in the subject for Really Stupid Shit, IF any of us have to post RSS. (Patent to Dennis Harris for RSS) So all you lurkers out there, I'm sorry for upsetting some of you with my sloppy writing. I love ALL EDAs. I really do. The Reader magazine of San Diego featured a bit of a blurb on our very own Jewel! They even mentioned this list! Here's what was said: - --Can't get enough of Jewel? Log on to any of the 19 Jewel-only sites on the World Wide Web. Learn about "Kilcherphrenia", or Jewel-madness. Discover that Harvard University's Webmaster considers the high school graduate a "Humanist/Philosopher". Read fan poetry -"The first time that I heard you brought me straight to heaven." Learn that Kilcher "has no beau at present." Exchange anecdotes with Every Day Angels (as hard-core Jewel fans call themselves) on the jewel@smoe.org mailing list. There's even a site devoted to Jewel guitar transcriptions, which turn out to be one- or two-bar rhythm figures repeated over the course of the song. Why devote a Web page to Jewel? Gregory Williams, who runs a site out of Bowling Green, Kentucky, e-mailed this response, "I don't know why I like her so much. Maybe it's because she's beautiful, maybe it's because I love her music, maybe it's because I feel like I can relate to her lyrics. I've actually gotten to meet her, and she is truly an intriguing person." Jeremy Falcone, another Jewel site host (from the University of Connecticut), adds, "Actually she's not the only page I have. I have Jim Carrey, Sandra Bullock...Alanis Morissette, Kramer....,etc., etc." Jewel's Net presence got to the point last summer that the Every Day Angels convinced her (over the Net) to put on a members-onlly performance July 18-19 in Woodstock, NY. Angels reportedly traveled from as far off as California for what was called "Jewelstock". -P.D. There's a photo of her in the mag as well. Black and white version of the poster I have of her where she's leaning against a tree. It's a close-up. I joined this list maybe a week or two ago, and have been really impressed with the list volume, although I must say, sometimes the signal to noise ratio (JC/NJC) is a little disturbing -- BUT, that's okay, since I like hearing the off-topic stuff too, since I'm usually interested in the tangent artists. Anyway, I got into Jewel when I was watching the fateful David Letterman performance ages ago. I was hooked beyond belief. That name, "Jewel", just kept itself in my mind long enough to make me buy the album. So, Pieces of You gets a great spot next to Dave Matthews, Rush, Sarah McLachlan, Yes, and Ozric Tentacles, on my "frequently played list". I stumbled across this list when I was, yep, netsurfin' one day. At AltaVista, I just decided to search for Jewel. Lo and behold -- the list was found! I've been on several other mailing lists, so I happily clicked away, expecting the worst, and I've been quite surpirsed. About me... well, I'm a senior (21 yrs. old) at The Johns Hopkins University, studying in electrical engineering, specifically VLSI design (as if that means anything to the general public).
