But when she acknowledged the clan presence, lovingly damned us and took my request, it wasn't easy holding back the tears. THIS is Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet? According to Director Baz Luhrmann, it is. With help from Craig Pearce, Luhrmann directed and adapted the play for the big screen and officially titled it William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Never mind the fact that it contains all the technologies of the twentieth century. Never mind that the swords have metamorphosed into guns bearing the family crest. Never mind the director turned down a beautiful song, "The Face of Love" by Jewel Kilcher, and replaced it with a really bad song about a first kiss. It's still Shakespeare, or so the director would like to think. DonUt misinterpret my views, itUs a really good movie in its own right. The acting is superb, the set and costume design is amazing and the actors, after the audience takes half an hour to become accustomed to their speaking, manage to draw the audience in and feel their emotions. But to purposely con people into the theater by calling it William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is a scam. Pure and simple. In Shakespeare, Juliet did not shoot herself in her head; Romeo's best friend was not in drag; the church's boys' choir did not do their own rendition of Prince's "When the Doves Cry," and the Prince of the town did not travel about in a helicopter reporting the news for Channel 12. And how is the audience expected to believe that Claire Danes is John Leguizamo's cousin? The only aspect of the movie not changed was the wording. The Elizabethan articulation of the words was kept from Shakespeare's original but was spoken by American actors straight from the Midwest. Is the Elizabethan word choice all to be expected to keep it considered as being time honored traditional literature? Excuse me, but in ordered to be called "Shakespeare's" shouldn't the movie contain ShakespeareUs original thoughts and ideas? His play should be portrayed his way, not by some two-bit director who has decided to manipulate it and twist it into something it truly is not, most likely to be remembered for teenage appeal and to update the high schools' libraries. Since Luhrmann seemed to drastically want to modernize Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, why didnUt he just modernize the whole movie, except for bits and pieces of it? The West Side Story was just that, a "new" version of Romeo and Juliet and it actually worked. Luhrmann would have done a much better job if he had chosen an era and stuck with it. But if you do want to go see a beautiful, sappy movie about star-crossed lovers, go ahead and see William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, just do not expect to actually get a true feeling of Shakespeare's work. ------------------------------ From: Greg Phillips Date: Tue, 29 Oct 1996 15:26:48 -0500 Subject: HFS JPT & other ramblings not pertinent to much of anything but my life My friend who attended The JPT think it was aroubf OCt. I wrote it during religion class. It's a love /hate/ frustration poem. "Death on a Broken Wing" So I wait for the corrosive acid to start punping sweet vengeance against my stomach linning. Is there any monster that doesnt consider himself human? For every unpredictable ,flirtatious glance , my heart's stable biorythm skipped it's pace, and threw me face down against the cold marble floor. Whatever burned... I smelled as my stained skin lost it's colors, and my eyes drifted away... Far away... down the gallows and the fathoms, forgotten long ago under the water , drowning themselves in their own dry saliva. Undermining the skies High! High! Looked up the blind. Yet no one bled so scarce as to know that I had no one. Hello! Hello! Hell-oooh!! Sweet , righteous devil. Smite me with your unforgiving lies! Confused , diffuse the spell which you so rightly prepared. Half knee deep inside her broken belly. No time Nowhere to go. Uncalledfor manipulation; you molded every scrap of my soul furtively with your dirty hands , and waited while it cooked fully baked in your oven. No time to look deep inside your eyes. for everytime your eyes stare deep inside mine, a quagmire of naseau controls me. Contemn... I will not... for I'm finding myself in a very indifferent mind. My chest has been numbed to such certainty that breathing is no longer constant. "Drink my blood" - you said "Blood shed from my breast" But I will not be subdued! Shall I wait for the devil to start loving God? Shall I wait for a monster to stop scarring children? I plan on having it up and fully functional on Thursday morning at 6AM... look for it! http://www.servtech.com/public/mschaeff/index.html I may put a poem up in the meantime, just so something is there and you all know I am really working on it. Just a few other things... - - I have decided that I will include prose. I will make a special page for it that is reachable from the main site. The prose can cover any topic from fact to fiction. A few have told me that they don't write poems but do write prose so I want to include them. If you have any prose to submit, try to get it in by midnight (EST) of Wed night/Thurs morning. That will ensure it is up right away, otherwise it won't be up till probably the weekend. - - As of yet I have 22 poems and 2 prose. Thats great for a start but I think there are more poets out there than have submitted (Sinjin? An anonymous EDA says your a great poet) so if you have anything, please send it in. Even if its been on the list before. - - I will also have a page for literary contests. So far I have two, one for high school student written poetry and another for any type of writing/art work. If any of you know of any, send me information. If you have packets of info from the people running the contest, email me and I will email you my snailmail address. Thanks folks! A special thanks to all those who submitted!! Zero Jewel Content - Good morning Angels. For any of you who wrote and asked me questions about Kangaroos or were remotely interested in the recent kangaroo thread, there was a story on the news this morning about a boy quite seriously injured by a male Grey Kangaroo. Apparently the boy was collecting stray golf balls on a Golf Course and was off the fairway, in the scrub, where a herd (? correct collective pronoun???) of kangaroos were just hanging around. It seems it's mating season here right now (it is Spring afterall) and there was one great big male among all these females (lucky guy!) who suddenly set upon this young boy, pounced on his back and lacerated his face with his paw claws and injured the boy's back and only got off when some nearby golfers took to him with their clubs and beat him off. Needless to say the boy is in quite a bad way right now. A park ranger said that the Buck was probably trying to protect the females. Either that or he thought the boy was a female kangaroo but that seems a tad unlikely. Let that be a lesson to us all to avoid big grey kangroos in mating season!
