Besides the Jewel list I'm on the Heather Nova list (mentioned above) and the Poe list (mentioned above) although I almost never post on any of them, in fact I don't think I've posted to the Nova list within the last 6 months and I've been on the Poe list since day one and haven't posted... the last time I posted on the Jewel list was to announce my Patty Griffin page =) I'm thinking of starting a Patty Griffin mailinglist too =) cya ~ christopher anderson ~ ~ nothing@tir.com ~ ~ www.tir.com/~nothing/ ~ ------------------------------ From: Slunk69090@aol.com Date: Mon, 28 Oct 1996 22:49:19 -0500 Subject: NJC: LC: AOL Problem! Please Read! Houston...we have a problem. All right...I doubt this is gonna make it all the way to smoe...but it's pretty much a last hope. Ok...AOL's having a MAJOR malfunction. All E-mail as well as anything E-mail related is _totally_ devastated. No sending ( how did this go through? ), no recieving, no FlashSessions, NO E-MAIL....this means that I can see the mail pile up in my Mailbox...yet there's some strange forcefield that requires rebooting if you come to close. SO...for the List Content of this post. If you don't see me responding, or any other AOL member for that matter, here's your answer. Now, I know some of you genius's on AOL out there are gonna make fun of me, and say I'm lying, or it's a hoax, or whatever, and I don't know how lucky you guys are, but I was told after a 13 minute wait...I "chatted" with an AOL Tech Staff Member, and they told me that it was ALL down. His words not mine...I have proof. Well, that's all I have to say, except that I pray that this gets through... Either I'm really tired or I just haven't been listening close enough =) Of course, "Louisa & Her Blue Guitar", "Moon Over Austin", and, for some bizarre reason, "Swedish Song" is sort of like that too. THey are playing here at Amherst College this Friday (come on down if you can), playing at Border's in Boston on Saturday (free, dammit) and the Tinker Street Cafe in Woodstock (hey, Happy played there and we Jewelstockers almost ate there) the same day. For more info check out their website at www.squirrelboy.com they have a bunch of shows coming up in PA, MD, and VA as well as a New England tour in December. They have a kind of pop-folk-rock sound. the singer (lisa matthews) has a beautiful voice and they got a good violin player. I have to admit that I really don't pay too much attention to lyrics. Sometimes I'll hear a catchy snippet (always always eat red red apples) and try to figure out what the other lyrics of the song are; but usually, when you find me singing a song, I'm doing it phonetically from having listened to it enough times to have a rough idea of what the singer is saying.<<< Even though I think lyrics are more important, I also do listen to the music and the voice first. It took me a few months listening to PoY before I actually opened up the notes and read the lyrics. I, personally, don't see myself ever giving Tori Amos's songwriting a chance because her voice drives me nuts. But that's moi. >Now that I've experienced heartbreak (to old friends and lost loves and >the season of mists- or something like that), the emotions bared and >expressed in their songs have been illuminated. Isn't it incredible how valuable a song can become to you if you have personal experience with the topic? An song inferior to most in quality will become your favorite song of all if every word describes what has happened to you. > It makes me happy and sad to see that the common >bond of severed affections can bring appreciation of music and poetry to >another beautiful level. Writing about pain is a common theme; I know I find it easier to write songs about pain than of triumph or security. However, fans of Jewel, Sarah, Tori, etc. also are bonded by the happy songs -- i.e. Morning Song. It's relieving to see our *comrades of the dark* try to brighten our spirits...it makes them even more of our friends. >But, I still haven't written a poem since Junior year of High School. >All the analysis crap, no matter how intelligent and informative, left a >bad taste in my brain that tainted poetry (especially the unrefined >poetry that spills out of my head and onto the page) as BS. "Bad" poetry never goes to waste...never discard one and always include them with your good ones. My advice for being able to write poetry is to forget that you are writing a poem. Write what you can (in prose or poetic form) and fix it up to your tastes later. - Mark ------------------------------ From: PAUL KYUSAM KIM Date: Tue, 29 Oct 1996 00:49:42 -0500 (EST) Subject: some JC, danny frankel, pirate stations Mark Jones commented on the similarities between the noticeable breath intakes of Jewel and Tori (and Alanis?!). Yes this discussion has popped up (I think twice, maybe three times. Not often though). The first time that Jewel and Tori were compared, a flamewar broke out (back in December, I think). Heh. I've always found that Jewel does the "heavy breathing" (sexual innuendo, paul?) thing really bigtime on "Don't" and that this might be the big source of Tori/Jewel comparisons. Jewel has confessed that My Own Private God's Gift to Women is actually her attempt at writing a Tori song, but I doubt that;) I noticed while in the radio station here at college that on the poster for Mike Watt's album, Ballhog or Tugboat, among all the big name stars like Eddie Vedder and Flea is listed Danny Frankel, our main man drummer from the May tour of Jewel's. Pretty cool. Oh, Jerry Marotta, the guy who did drums at Jewelstock and for the album, I presume, has also done stuff with Happy Rhodes. Just wanted to let you non-ectophiles know that:) On Mon, 28 Oct 1996, Dean wrote: > >> Or maybe I'll just start my own pirate station!!! *yeah right!* > > > >This is a great idea. Well, the easiest thing to do would be to just get an eye patch (one of those sterile gauze patches works fine), a peg leg, and some scurvy and start saying "arrrr, avast ye mateys" and you should be able to get the pirate station. If you wanted to go all out, you could try to find Carter Garr Navarro, the Pirate King, and stick a receiver up his bum, put him on the roof, and stick speakers out of his ears. Some people have been pointing out lookalikes to Jewel (yes, jazz singer Diana Krall looks sorta like Jewel on the cover of her latest album, but that's just that picture). Someone pointed out the movie Chasing Amy or whatever it's called. Just like to post one of my claims to fame here: Mike Allred, the creator/writer/artist on the comic book Madman, is in that movie and I met him and won a yoyo contest and he drew me a picture of Madman and Josephine as a prize. :) someone named Preferred Customer (what a cruel joke on the parents' part) sprach: > Please come out with NEAR YOU ALWAYS as your new song. > It is the best song I have ever heard in my life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! > I love your CD! well, geez, thanks. Just for you, Preferred, I'll release that song next. I'm glad you like my cd.
