After all, I had just been given tickets to Tom Cochrane in Windsor (not exactly 'Concert Central'), but with the intriguing Tara McLean opening up. I've been curious about Tara for well over a year, after hearing her wonderful song Let Her Feel The Rain from a Nettwerk Records sampler last summer. Those on the Ecto list might remember that I asked about her at that time , and I subsequently posted tour and album info that I got from Nettwerk's mailing list. But before tonight I knew nothing else about her, and hadn't even seen a photo. I scored an early copy of her new single which I shared in the parking lot at JewelStock, and those of us who listened agreed that it was rather mediocre (mainly due to the drum machine production). So when her debut CD came out last month, I had actually forgotten all about it. In fact, I had lost so much enthusiasm, I didn't even rush to the show and arrived 15 minutes late, after Tara had already begun to play. Well that was a mistake, because what I saw was exhilerating, and I regret missing the first 2-3 songs! The first comparison that sprung to mind was Jewel, from the fact that young Tara was accompanying her beautiful, powerful, soaring soprano voice by herself on just an acoustic guitar. But Tara isn't really as deep in her songwriting as Jewel is, sounding perhaps more like Jann Arden in the way she writes of love and failed relationships. At one point she told us "I'm really a very happy person, but I seem to write mostly depressing songs", so she did her only cover of the night, of an upbeat Pretenders song that I can't recall the name of. She also pointed out that it was her 23rd birthday in 2 hours, which drew an impromptu rendition of 'Happy Birthday' from the rowdy, medium-sized audience in the half-full soft-seat theatre. By this time, the audience energy was absolutely electric, they were totally into this performer whom most had never heard of. Tara put down her acoustic guitar, and sat down at a Roland electric piano. She told us she had just recently started to play the piano and wasn't very good yet, but she wrote some new songs on piano and she wanted to play them like that. Then she launched into a flawless set of 2-3 incredible songs playing electric piano, apologizing between each for her beginnership. My Jewel comparisons were replaced by thoughts of Fiona Apple, especially because Tara comes across like a very giggly young schoolgirl, younger than her 23 years, just like Fiona did in the internet broadcast I heard. The last song she performed on piano also had some very Ani Difranco-like qualities. I hate to keep comparing her to other artists like this, but Tara really has her own sound, and little bits & pieces of all of these others come to mind, along with her label-mates Sarah McLachlan and Suzanne Little. As if this all wasn't impressive enough, she finished with an acapella tune which she delivered with powerful accuracy, never drifting off key. I actually felt a shiver go through me for the entire song, it was that good. Adrenelin still running, I prepared to leave before Tom Cochranes set, but Tara left by coyly saying, "I might be back!" So I settled in for the headliner, and to my delight Tom appeared by himself with only an acoustic guitar. The entire set was 'unplugged', with just a second guitar player (who turned out to be Bill Bell, formerly of Amanda Marshall's band), and a bongo/percussionist. The unplugged versions of Tom's songs, most of them older hits, proved delightful, and then Tara did join him for two songs for some very prominent 'background' vocals. If you're going to have someone sing backup vocals for your show, she may as well sound like Tara, wow! After the show, I got to head backstage to meet the perfomers. Most of the small group was there to see Tom, but of course I was more interested in Tara, as I had many questioms! Well, I got back tere to find her wrapped in her boyfriend's arms, looking like they needed to find a room fast! Not to be intimidated by this, I introduced myself and cracked some jokes about their friendliness. It turns out this guy, named Chad, is an old high school sweetheart who had just flown in from Florida to surprise Tara for her birthday. He's an actor on a TV series that I'll remember the name of later (some air force thing). Needless to say, Tara was preoccupied enough that I didn't get to ask many of my questions, so she remains a bit of a mystery. I do know she's originally from Prince Edward Island, Canada, and now makes her home in Vancouver, where she met her boyfriend and the Nettwerk Records folks. She said she was 'discovered' on a ferry boat, and had never really pursued a singing career. I'd say she's about 5'5 with long brunette hair, has a very wholesome 'contry girl' look about her, and looks and acts very young. A much different person than the mysterious, sophisticated lady I had envisioned. But what a fabulous singer! in fact, at the end of her set tonight, she told us she had a new album that had been out for about a month, but a lot of the songs she performed tonight were new. Gotta like that! I don't have the CD yet, but I will tomorrow. Tour dates were one of the questions I didn't get to ask her. But if you see her in your listings, you might want to make a point of seeing her. Rating (from the Jewel List rating system)- 4 Angels. I'm glad you guys care and are there for me and each other. Everyone should have a list like this. So here's the latest on the subject: I went to school this morning telling myself that I wasn't going to let some bad people get to me and I survived the day. That teacher still kept mentioning to other classes about how you should keep Christian friends and one of my senior (Christian) friends got mad and asked to see the teacher outside. There she told the teacher that she felt it was not right to talk about other students in class and that if she had a problem with that student, she should speak to that student personally. My teacher just said okay. I'm not fixed on getting revenge or an apology, I just want that teacher to know that it's not okay to be prejudiced. The Bible tells it's readers to "love thy neighbor" and you should always practice what you preach. I hope these extremists aren't contagious and don't spoil the beauty of the Christian (and all other) religions. Well, I feel alot better due to all the sound advice I got. Thanks you guys! I'll keep you posted. IT'S THE WEEKEND!!!! I think I deserve my break. Hey, I got Jewel on FarmAid to look forward to on Saturday! At night I hear the howl of over 50 coyote lurking in the darkness. We have lost 4 of our cats to them. A bobcat has found its way into our yard as well. At night, I leave night lights on because we have found 8 scorpions in the house this year. Last year, a mountain lion was found walking through the center of town. My town has a population of over 130,000 people. There is more danger among them then any of the animals. The gang members and drug dealers account for an abnormal number of homicides. There are also friendy and beautiful animals to see. We see road runners on our property a lot. I never knew there was really such a bird. I thought it was only a cartoon character. A giant golden eagle makes its nest just across my kitchen window, on the top of a very tall evergreen tree. Whenever I go out at night to investigate noise on my roof, I usually find an owl trying to mate with our fake one. At this time of the year, we have thousands of Canadian geese flying over our house. We are in their flight path between two lakes. Every morning they act like an alarm clock as they fly in huge V formations just at sunrise. Jewel lives not very far from here. You can see why she likes the San Diego area so much.
