Anyway, I wanted to ask all of you to take two seconds Tell me about it. I haven't seen any of Jewel's most recent television performances. I missed Farm Aid because I was at work. I missed her appearance on Lifetime because I was stupid (and I'll miss it again because I'll be at work). I missed the MTV thing because I believed the on-screen programing guide (I'll probably miss that again tonight). And to top it all off... The Zinger: I was rewinding JewelStock Tape 2, side B in my car because I just had to listen to Chime Bells again, and I heard the ear shattering gnarl of a tape being eaten. I quickly ejected, unravelled the twisted part and played it. I sounded fine, so I carefully rewound it. I played it and I was greeted with silence until the contorted audio picks up at the end where Jewel yodels real fast. NOOOOOOOOO. Am I the only knucklehead that is listening to the original tapes. I don't have a tape deck to make copies with. I love Chime Bells. What am I going to doooo!!! Karl "What do you mean those aren't 'Real' problems?" This is understandable because you may have limited time available. Some of you have said that you just didn't have interest in the other groups performing. The same thing was asked about was the Lifetime show. I have some problems with this. This letter is not meant to condemn or flame anyone. I mean to just ask a question. Does Jewel mean more to you than what the purposes of those two events are for. Farm Aid has been a annual event meant to raise money and awareness of the plight of the American farmer. Their way of life is being destroyed by corporate farming and greedy bankers forclosing on them. The event on Lifetime is about breast cancer and the suffering of women worldwide from this horrible disease. I have two things that I hope for as you all watch this programing. One, that you do not lose sight of what it's intended purpose is and that you praise all the people involved that make events like these possible. Two, that the artist that perform at events such as this also don't lose sight of what they are for and are not just doing it to help there careers. We all know that Jewel carries a jar of dirt from Homer with her. These events must be done by her from her heart, just as JewelStock was. As I watched the San Diego Chargers on Monday Night Football, the blimp showed a shot high above the stadium. All along the northern part of the picture was a huge rim of fire. That fire started in my town of Escondido and traveled over 15 miles toward Carlsbad. In its path, it destroyed over 110 homes. I still don't know if my friends house was one of them. She is in Nashville trying to get her singing career started. On Tuesday, Bruce Springsteen was playing at the Civic Center in San Diego. Besides being my favorite artist, he is also a friend. I didn't go to the concert. How could I as my friends and neighbors homes were being destroyed. I had to decide what was more important. Certainly seeing Bruce in concert was not. Today on the Lucky Town mailing list, it was announced that Bruce was going to be a part of a free concert in LA . The purpose of this event is to rally people against Proposition 209. This prop is for ending affirmitive action in CA. I will be there not to just see Bruce, but to lend my support for this good cause. I still don't have all the details about the event, so if any of you from LA has any more info, please email me. I would also like to meet as many of you there as I could. > From: Donna Baker > Subject: Bruce in Free Concert in L.A. > Date: Wed, 23 Oct 1996 13:20:32 -0700 > > The L.A. It is kind of sappy and personal. Even though I love Sarah McLachlan and Jewel and scads of other female artists/songwriters who predominantly write about relationships (especially failed ones), it's rarely been the words that have touched me, but the music and the voice. I have to admit that I really don't pay too much attention to lyrics. Sometimes I'll hear a catchy snippet (always always eat red red apples) and try to figure out what the other lyrics of the song are; but usually, when you find me singing a song, I'm doing it phonetically from having listened to it enough times to have a rough idea of what the singer is saying. Now that I've experienced heartbreak (to old friends and lost loves and the season of mists- or something like that), the emotions bared and expressed in their songs have been illuminated. While I might not be able to connect with the entire song (because, they are reflections of the writers and their own experiences, and everyone and everything is different), there are places where i can identify the feelings and say, "yeah, that's me, too" (because some things can be universal). I've made tons of tape mixes in my life, often with themes and connections. But I'd never made a melancholy tape mix before. I did one last weekend; it was kind of cathartic and almost necessary considering the place music holds in my life. I now understand why people like Jewel and Sarah who write such beautiful words about love and relationships touch so many people and have so many fans like you people. It makes me happy and sad to see that the common bond of severed affections can bring appreciation of music and poetry to another beautiful level. But, I still haven't written a poem since Junior year of High School. All the analysis crap, no matter how intelligent and informative, left a bad taste in my brain that tainted poetry (especially the unrefined poetry that spills out of my head and onto the page) as BS. heh. go Paul. sympathy, empathy, pathetique Paul "massive coronary" Kim ------------------------------ From: angelneedsaride@kktv.com Date: Thu, 24 Oct 1996 17:38:00 -0500 Subject: Re: NJC too many toms I am proud to say....(as Dennis "Vocab Boy" Harris pointed out to me) that I am THE ONLY Chelsea on the list who posts regularly!! It all seems so contrary to the very principles of religion in the first place, namely be good, believe in God and love your fellow man. I've seen a few people mention Amanda Marshall here lately, so I thought I'd offer this up to the fans of hers on this list. I have an Amanda Marshall compilation called "Roots", 90 minutes of material not on her debut CD. It's almost identical to Rare Angels in its format...it starts with her 4-song demo tape, includes a recording from a hard-to-find Canadian tribute CD to Neil Young, and is filled out with various live material from broadcasts and audience recordings. Her pre-CD material sounded much more like Janis Joplin-Etheridge-Joan Osborne, in contrast to her current Amy Grant-ish sound. If you're interested let me know. This compilation of listmember "Thank You" messages to Jewel & Lenedra about Jewelstock Tapes (or JS in general) needs to be printed by the 20th of November so it can be in their hands around Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving just seemed like the perfect time. Both Jewel & Lenedra will be home for two weeks, (the 1st time in well over a year!) & have a better chance to really enjoy this then, too. It still gives almost a month for the remaining leaves to get 'em & write if they want to. We thought of sending a box of actual EDA thank you cards individually sent from all of you, but it seemed unlikely that could be achieved so quickly. It would be more personal & lend itself to creativity and all that so it would've been nicer, I know. I personally like the idea a lot.
