Ectopians: NJC = Non-Jewel Content, as a courtesy to the list. EDAs = Everyday Angels = Jewel list members. :-) - ---------- My first inkling that Friday would not be a normal day came when I heard a garbled advertisement on the radio (Jewel- and ecto-friendly WTTS, 92.3 Bloomington). Clearly "Every Little Bit" was playing under the voice, but the announcer seemd confused over whether the artist who released "Living With Ghosts" was Nanci Griffith or Patty Griffin. Two out of three, I guess. Anyway, the point was that whoever this artist was, she would be playing at the Bluebird Friday night as an opening act. It took about half an hour of scouring the Web to confirm that Patty was indeed playing the Bluebird; appropriately, Toni needed a ride to Bloomington Friday night to work with the band and also was promised a ride home. Unfortunately, the band commitment and the age 21 limit for the venue prevented her from seeing the concert. We made it to B'town about 7 PM, and I dropped Toni off; I discovered that the venue didn't open till 9 PM, so I had time to kill. Had a bite to eat and still was early for 'doors open'. I amused myself by chatting with the few people who were also early, though not as early as I. No other EDAs in sight. Suddenly, someone called my name. Who knows me here? I looked up to see Mike, the guitar player from Toni's second band, and his wife Jo. They too had heard of Patty's appearance just this morning and hastened down. Wish I'd known they were coming! We spent a bit catching up on events, and realized we could glom onto an entire table in the front row when the doors opened. Eventually, the guy at the door started leaning out and telling us, "Sound check is almost over. Just a few more minutes." Then, "Sorry. Sound check taking a little long. Hang on." Finally, "There's one more sound check left, but we're opening the doors anyway." We were almost 40 minutes past 9 at that point. Mike and I trotted to the performance area, grabbed a nice table and moved it within three feet of the stage. Why not? Then we realized that the last sound check was indeed underway, and that the slender woman testing her guitar through the monitors was Patty! She finished the check quickly, and as she came down the steps (the stage was at the end of the long hall, so performers have to walk through the audience to get on or off the stage), we hailed her and asked her to come over to our table. She did, and we spent a few minutes talking. I exhibited my JewelStock T-shirt and said, "Patty, do you remember where you were on July 18, 1996?" She laughed and said, "I sure do!" and reached out to shake hands. She had no trouble believing that I was in the front row. She signed my LWG CD, even though she didn't have one of Linus's green markers (yeah, she remembered; Hi, Linus!). We let her get ready for the performance then, suspecting we'd be able to chat again afterward if she wasn't tired. Actually, she dashed off to the dressing room, changed clothes, and let her hair down in about 5 minutes. She came back wearing a dark pair of slacks, a button-down top, and a pair of chunky but tall heels and ascended to the stage again. She was quickly introduced by a young fellow who followed her onto the stage, and with no fanfare, she launched into her set. Here is a completely accurate set list, my first in years of posting... :-) She played about half of the songs on her Taylor, and the other half on an acoustic Gibson. 1. I Write the Book 2. Every Little Bit 3. Poor Man's House 4. Nobody's Crying 5. White Boys (?) 6. Moses 7. Sweet Lorraine 8. Crazy ENCORE 9. We are Water That takes some explanation... The audience was a little restless until she did ELB, whereupon there seemed to be a shift in their perception. The front row cheered and applauded loudly for each number, and the rest of the audience seemed to slowly catch fire. Soon there were more people listening than talking (though not enough, but this is a bar fercryinoutloud) and Patty seemd genuinely gratified at the enthusiasm of the applause. White Boys (I think that's right) featured a pyrotechnic display of guitar chord changes and nimble strumming that evoked some loud cheers even from the back rows. The college crowd on our left was relatively respectful, and when Patty stopped to interact with the crowd briefly, they bantered with her. One guy was targeted by his friends for a dedication; the reason being that he'd spent an hour listening to her CD at a local store's listening booth and then tried to convert all of his friends by dragging them to the concert. She did in fact dedicate "Moses" to him. Patty's voice was crystal clear, strong, and dead on key; she only made one guitar fluff all evening that I heard, and managed to continue playing and singing with a grin on her face. I think many people were silenced (or at least drowned out) when she hit those powerful, pure notes with her vocal chords. What a voice. She was just about ready to wrap up with "Mad Mission", when Mike and I found ourselves shouting "Do 'Crazy'!". Patty leaned away from the microphone, gave us a look that said, "Should I?" and then seemed to come to a decision. "I wasn't gonna do this," she spoke into the mic, "But I just got a request..." and proceeded to retune the guitar quickly. Those of you who went to JewelStock can be jealous; it was definitely worth requesting! Those who haven't heard her cover this tune yet, be sure and ask her when she comes to your town :-) It was great. After she wrung us all out (thunderous applause, possibly the best all evening), Patty thanked us for coming, and slowly worked her way to the steps. Giving us all time to cheer, applaud, whistle, and scream "MORE! MORE!" She got off the stage, took a drink of bottled water, and noticed that we weren't shutting up. Yup, she went for it. Another new tune, "We Are Water". Great finale, more applause. No, she really had to leave; the other bands were going to start way too late as it was. Mike asked her for the set list as she came down from the stage, and after giving him another look like "Why on earth would you want that?" she smilingly handed over her handwritten setlist. If only I had thought faster... Not too many people followed her out of the area, though she did hang around for a while to sign autographs and chat with folks. I did approach her again to make sure I had the name of the last song right, and we ended up talking briefly about JewelStock. Patty regretted not talking to Jewel for very long, but appreciated Jewel's fans and their support of her opening act. She seemed really happy that Jewel's CD was doing well; I took the opportunity to suggest that maybe it was her turn now, a thought which was happily received. Hint, hint; fellow music lovers. Buy "Living With Ghosts", A&M 31454 0490 2 and keep this lady writing tunes. I complimented her on the set again, we shook hands again, and I stepped out into the 35-degree cold, warmed only by my short-sleeve JewelStock T-shirt and a very worthwhile evening of Patty Griffin music. I'd better shut up and post this before I spend all night revising it. I hope some of you found it of interest... - -- | Greg Dunn | don't open your eyes, you won't | | GregDunn@aol.com | like what you see. the blind | | gregdunn@indy.net | have been blessed with security. | | http://members.aol.com/gregdunn | Trent Reznor | ------------------------------ From: Tom Proven Date: Sat, 19 Oct 1996 09:34:35 -0700 (PDT) Subject: STL--maybe Looks like StL might be available at Southland CD.
