The New York City show was this past Tuesday. Ciao - Linus - ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Wed, 16 Oct 1996 00:34:55 -0400 (EDT) From: Linus Gelber Subject: Patty Griffin @ the Bottom Line Wonderful show. She is opening for the Badlees, a rocky ensemble that is fun but left me disinterested: they have the sort of good-timey integrity of Hootie and the Blowfish, but that isn't my thing. They even covered a Hootie tune, and in ultimate redundant fashion they sounded so much like Hootie doing it that I got confused and thought for a moment, wait, this is a major song I've already found dull on the radio, and--aha, it's an almost absurdly parodic cover, not meant at all as parody. Patty [...snip...] graciously signed my CD. She seemed very worn out, and apologized on stage at one point for not talking very much ("I just don't have anything to say"). Set list - - Poor Man's House (superb) - Every Little Bit - Sweet Lorraine - Let Them Fly - Nobody's Crying a.k.a. Wishing Well - Cain (The above two she described as paired songs, written this winter when she was snowed in up in Maine. Both are excellent. Cain's uptempo, and I didn't really get most of the words, just the gist.) - We Are Water (a good one to request, if she doesn't play it) - Moses - Crazy (mere moments of scat, she was obviously not feeling the urge: as I say, she looked pretty beat) And as an encore: - Forgiveness (wonderful) The Badlees did not get called back for an encore, and a big slice of audience left after Patty's set. Which is rude, I suppose, but it made me feel good about her prospects. She did sing one number with the Badlees, "I've Never Been to Spain" [sic - I always thought it was called something else, but I'm probably wrong], and the pairing of her careful trained voice and technique with their calculated rock-star writhings was interesting to see. I thought she shone, even in rough company. When the band "cut loose" (as much as they do cut loose, and on cue--but whatever, obviously it pays their bills) she looked trapped for a moment, and then grinned and kept on doing her moppet-dancing thing whilst they cavorted and leaped and struck figures around her. It was nearly embarrassing, but was all done in excellent good cheer. Maybe it's all the touring, I don't know, but her performance seemed much stronger tonight than the previous two times I've seen her, including JewelStock. She played a fairly short show, less than an hour, to a very enthusiastic crowd that gave her a standing ovation and tried hard to bring her back for even more. She performed 3 'new' songs, and later came back in the middle of The Badlees set to do a kick-ass version of Never Been To Spain with the band. As much as I like Patty's solo acoustic stuff, seeing her belt this one out with the band has me convinced that she should do some band recordings on her next CD, it was probably the highlight of the evening. She seemed very happy at the crowd response, was bright and energetic all night, and stuck around for a long time to talk to people and sign things. the first thing she said when she saw me today was, 'Hey I talked to Linus the other night!', so Linus, I guess you made some kind of impression. In contrast to the crowd's response to Patty, which was similar to JewelStock in intensity, they were strikingly disinterested in The Badlees. In fact, over half the crowd left during the Badlees set, and as I walked out the door, I overheard the staff talking about how many people had left so far. I had several people e-mail me to ask if I could find out the remaining tour dates. I could only get the rest of the Badlees tour, which is wrapping up. Due to problems (that I won't go into again), all concerned want to wait & see if its actually possible for such a huge quantity of listmembers to keep the tapes safe. Patty's management requested that her set not be included unfortunately. Things are always subject to change, & now that the new Jewel CD is scheduled for March, that gives more time for possible reconsideration. If the 4th Tape does happen, & Patty's set is not included, I will discuss with Lenedra, options on including some other rare material to fill a 90 minute tape. I have lots of ideas. It's best that these ideas are not specifically mentioned, because I certainly don't want to dissapoint anyone, should it not happen. Bottom Line: Its all up in the air for now....... Now onto a question that I have gotten from quite a few. I think Toni Dunn was the first to ask this, but I musta (conveniently) missed it at the time. << What happenned to the Delores apology on the Jewelstock Tapes?>> I guess we cant sneak anything by you folks! Jewel asked me to make sure that this & the "baseball bat comment" be deleted from EVERY copy of the tapes for obvious reasons. Although hilarious at the time, she prefered to let the Delores thing die forever. So that's something that was purposely removed from ALL tapes. Lastly, I'd like to thank all those who have continued to help on the Performance Chronology. It'll soon include almost 400 shows & important dates in Jewel's career. In the past few months, many have contributed corrections & additions. Some of the "old timers" that are missing in action have helped greatly! Specifically Steve Ito, Jeff Hanson & Neal Copperman (who along with the help of others)have or are now providing info on most of the famous Innerchange Dates from 94. I know Adam has yet to completely update the site, but soon it will include most of these Innerchange dates. Anyone yet to visit Adam's site, I highly suggest you do so! She says the soul is stifled and suffocated when unable to follow its dream. She is Jewel(Kilcher), 21, thesinger-songwriter-poet-philosopher whose folky, acoustic music--showcased in her first album, Pieces of You--combines 1960s introspection with 1990s style. And that's a good description of Jewel, too. Today, she arrives late, breathless and flushed from the midday Los Angeles heat. She has in tow her boyfriend, Michel, a male model she met at a fashion show. She looks more like a down-home gal ready for chores than a rock star at an interview. But Jewel is, first and foremost, an artist. "One of my favorite things to do is sit and watch people," she says. "I make up their lives to be trabic or boring or brilliant." Jewel's own life has been a combination of these things. She and her two brothers grew up on a 800-acre homestead in rural Homer, Alaska, raised by singer-songwriter parents. Jewel began singing--yodeling, actually--when she was 6, joining her parents onstage at gigs. After her parents split and her mother moved away two years later, Jewel began writing, too, to help herself get in touch with feelings she could not articulate. "It got to the point where if I had a problem with my father, I could never speak it," she says, gently touching her friend's arm as if to make sure of his presence. "I would write four pages and give it to him." But it took Jewel a long time to be able to, as she puts it, "speak from the heart." At 14, she was befriended by a Native American family, who, she says, "took me out to a meadow and said, 'Your life in the future will call for you to speak honestly to people. You don't know how to speak from your heart, and you need to learn how.' I remember going on top of a mountain and trying to say anything honest--just to the wind. I was crying because I couldn't say anything sincere." Meanwhile, Jewel spent summers and holidays with her mother, Nedra, who had moved to San Diego and was working part time teaching nutrition and self-improvement at a spa. It was Nedra who helped develop Jewel's thoughtful side. "She's always urged me to know myself and to be brave and listen to myself," Jewel explains. "She'd urge me to spend 5 days alone in a cabin without anyone coming by, without any TV. I thought I'd go insane. And she'd have me do juice fasts and things like that." All these experiences came together during Jewel's last two years of high school, when she was offered a vocal scholarship to Michigan's Interlochen Fine Arts Academy. There, she began learning guitar, keeping a journal and writing songs. "My two years there were like a turning point," she says. But the biggest turning point came after graduation. Loving the warm weather and the surf, Jewel moved in with her mother in California but had no idea what to do with her life. She took a waitressing job but couldn't stand being chained to a regular schedule. "I was scared. I was 18, and I thought I would have to give up everything I believed in and everything I wanted to do. I just hated life. I cried every day. I was so frustrating. "I finally got fired, and my mom said, 'This is ridiculous. We're going to live in our cars, and we're going to do what we love or die.'" They did just that. Jewel slept in her van, survived on carrots and peanut butter, and played in local coffeehouses. Word of her talent reached Los Angeles, and it wasn'tt long before Jewel signed a record deal. It's a very lucky ending, especially for someone who, as she says, basically "dropped out of the world." "Everything I've ever learned--good and bad--has given immeasurably to what I'm doing now," she says. "I believe I've been guided and helped, and it's very humbling. I think if you demand, 'This is how I want my life to become,' it will. Miracles do happen." ************ That's it! Sorry for any typos, I had limited time to get this done.
