Hey everyone, Sorry I haven't really been around for awhile...but there is to much traffic on this list for me to post regularly. Anyway, a friend of mine went to a record show and got 6 Jewel posters for me. (It is a really nice poster -the one that is Jewel On Tour with small picture of Duncan Sheik in the corner). I paid $15 (Canadian) for each of them, I am happy to sell them for cost. So if you are interested, e-mail me at lev@idirect.com with the subject Jewel Poster Request. If you are in the U.S., You can send me a money order for $15 U.S. dollars, and I will use the difference in the exchange rate to cover the poster tube and stamps. Why, I can't think of anything more JC short of Jewel herself! And thus, I enter into a minor tirade -- minor because I waited quite a while before posting this so most of the anger and disgust has left me, but a tirade nonetheless. What I'm pissed about is the hostile, authoritarian attitude that some people on the list seem to have adopted. An attitude that is driving almost every person who signs on to the list to shrink back in fear of violating some unspoken rule of the list. And those who do dare to post, post guardedly and apologetically, tossing up "NJC" for no reason. And now... Now, by the gods, there's even a self-proclaimed "List Police"! This is ridiculous, what are you trying to accomplish here? "Preserving the nature of the list?" The nature of the list is defined by the interaction of people with different backgrounds and different ideas brought together by the common uniting force of Jewel and her music. But this is not, and never has been a Jewel only list. People have complained about the high traffic on this list -- there are around 500 subscribers at last count, less than 10% of them post regularly from my observations. And the list is only growing. This attack on NJC will only serve to drive more and more people into lurkerdom. Do we really want only 5% of people to post? Or worse yet, 2%! What kind of a list has 2% of people posting on it? Too often recently I have seen people lamenting the loss of "old-timers." What is it that old-timers have to offer that newbies can't, besides remembering something that happened in the past? I remember the first big Jewel-vs-??? debate (Tori), and a few of Jewel's letters to the list when we first heard, "Fish don't know they're short..." But I don't recall a certain Alan Bershaw being on the list then. He must've been some "newbie" to come on during my unfortunate hiatus. Now what could some guy like him who wasn't here "way back when" offer for the list? Well, besides the masterfully done greatest dubs of all time that he did purely out of the generosity of his heart. And we cry about the incessant "NJC" that permeates the list. As if there was no NJC "way back when." Where would we be without NJC? What of Amy's inane ramblings about her life? Dennis's non sequiter response to anything and everything? In-jokes? Running-gags? Sorrowful tales where "The only place I knew to turn was to you EDAs."? The wonderful poetry and hilarious stories from people's lives? I cherish these things more than any specifically Jewel content (which is usually another dissapointing one-line note about having to wait longer for the next album). And now, are we to drive out this wonderful flavoring and variations that make this such a great list? Oh, sure, you and I and everyone else who's been here since December know what's worth posting and what's not. But what of newbies and lurkers? People like dear Mr. Scott? They're newbies now who aren't familiar with the list, but six months from now they'll be the old-timers thinking of "way back when." And what will they remember? That we spent all out time yelling at people who posted? And why the distinction between "newbies" and "old-timers" anyway? Are we not all "newbies" in the struggle to remain hopeful and spiritual amid the cynicism and disillusionment around us? Are we not all "old-timers" in that we hold strong to the strength and will of the human spirit that has endured throughout history? And are we not all Angels in that we all love Jewel's music and the things she says through it? People sign on to the list and ask what is expected of them? I tell them, "You already know. All that you need to know about what to post and how to post it and how to respond to other people's post is embodied in the music that led you here. Spend time just reading the list and listening to Jewel's music and you'll quickly understand what we're about here." Finally, I'd like to briefly address the fact that many people who used to be on the list no longer are. Quite simply, nothing lasts forever. People change jobs, move around the country, have other responsibilities, lose internet access, leave school, travel abroad, or they just decide for whatever reason they can't do this anymore. And it's not always because of too much traffic or too little JC. Instead of chaining people to the list and making sure it stays just the way we want it, we should embrace the new people who join and thus keep the list alive while others have to leave. So, if I haven't done so already, a big welcome to everyone who has recently joined the list, and post, dammit! And don't be scared off by any of these so-called "Angels." :-b - ----- telliamed@juno.com ### All opinions expressed are yours. Another great musician, Kurt Cobain, also had a Ferrington custom. Here's the story: The Ferrington Guitar. The luthier Danny Ferrington made a custom guitar for Kurt in 1992, based on the Fender Mustang. "Kurt is left-handed, and he really likes the Fender Mustang he's been playing for a few years. But his playing style is so rough, and left-handed Mustangs so rare, that it was beginning to look as if his favorite guitar was going to break apart right out from under him. I'd talked with Nick Close, one of Nirvana's roadies, about trying to find replacement necks for the Mustang, but finally Kurt called me to talk about ordering a new custom guitar. "Nirvana left for Australia a few days later, and Kurt faxed me a great little picture showing where he wanted the pickups to be and what shape to use for the body. It was the first time I'd collaborated by fax, and I thought it was real fun to be designing a guitar by long distance using such a modern communications technology. "I built his guitar to be a lot like that old Mustang, except we used a Gibson-style bridge that's better at keeping the guitar in tune, and I made the neck a little straighter so that it won't be so apt to break when Kurt plays it hard. It's tricky making left- handed guitars, though, because everything on a left-handed guitar is counter-intuitive for me. Right off the bat I made a few mistakes on Kurt's guitar, so finally I took to labeling all the parts 'This Side Up' to remind myself that I needed to do everything backwards. The guitar turned out real well, and a few months later Kurt came by with his wife to pick it up. Just after he started playing it he stopped dead in his tracks and said, 'This is like my dream guitar!' His wife asked, 'Honey, are you gonna trash this one too?' but Kurt got this horrified look on his face, and in a solemn voice he said, 'No, this one's going to be my recording guitar.' I was tickled to death, and it was incredibly satisfying to hear that I'd hit the nail right on the head" (28). The Ferrington guitar is distinguished by several features. It has heart-shaped fretboard "dot" inlays, a stylized "f"(for Ferrington) on the peghead, three pickups (which look like single coil neck and middle pickup, and a humbucker bridge-position pickup), and an almost-Mustang pickguard where the plastic continues right down to the control knobs (this section is chrome on actual Mustangs). The Mustang slide switches are replaced with a toggle switch where the input jack would be. The actual input jack is a Stratocaster-style jack mounted below the pickguard. The body is basswood, with a maple neck and rosewood fretboard. Its finished in what Fender calls sonic blue, with a red-swirl mother- of-bowling-ball pickguard. I don't know of any pictures or footage of Kurt playing this guitar, but this could be because it was used only as a "recording guitar" Reprinted w/o permission from "~The *NEW* Kurt Cobain Equipment FAQ~, Version 1.9" at http://members.aol.com/bhabes/private/nkcequi.htm - --Garrett ------------------------------ From: Chopped Liver Date: Thu, 17 Oct 1996 10:23:41 -0600 (MDT) Subject: Re: Jewel's (new?)
