Stuckless" Date: Thu, 10 Oct 1996 10:18:56 -0230 Subject: Rare and Radio Angels Hello everybody. I have somewhat of an announcement to make today. In anticipation of my losing my univeristy account in the not too distant future (I've graduated and will only be colins@cs.mun.ca for a couple more months), and in anticipation of my landing a full time job possibly requiring a move out of province, I have to end my participation in the Rare Angels and Radio Angels distributions. The purpose of Rare Angels was to offer Jewel fans a taste of her wonderful music beyond the only other material available at the time - Pieces of You. Now with so many other great recordings and singles out there, Rare Angels is not nearly as important a tool as it was in the early days. Having said that, it is still my single most favorite Jewel tape to date. I'm certainly proud of what Neile and the others have accomplished with Rare Angels and I encourage Jewel fans to continue to distribute this material to others with the same good intentions that we brought with us. It has been fun to help out with these projects - I apologise to all of those to whom I couldn't reply immediately, especially the most recent batch of requests. I'm sure I'll still be receiving requests for these tapes for years to come :-), but I'd like for everyone to please change any reference to my name and email address in all FAQs so that people don't end up sending mail to an invalid address in the coming months. I hope that through my first ever Jewel page on the web, and the participation in the Rare and Radio Angels series that in some tiny way I was able to contribute to Jewel achieving her dream. All list members who have spread the word should be proud to feel the same - we all know how much Jewel has appreciated it. I look forward to her second release, which should without a doubt be a tremendous success. Cheers everybody. Colin, I can only hope that you can get connected again some time. Your web site was the first place I stopped on my search for information about Jewel. What I found there was invaluable. I'm certain that it introduced a lot of people to our favorite singer. You also helped me get my Rare/Radio Angels tapes, for which I will be eternally grateful. I thought it might be educational for those of you who don't see the complexity behind the hit single (as I didn't at one time). > Okay so I call the stupid radio station trying to resquest > ywmfm, and the stupid dj said no He wouldn't play it, but he > would play wwsys instead. You know, I used to think that radio stations played what their listeners requested, and the more requests the more popular a song became, and if it got requested enough it became a hit. Well, sometimes this happens, but the sad fact of life is that "hit" status seldom has anything to do with the listener's likes and dislikes. Most hits are hits for the same reason that books become best-sellers. How many of you know about that little scam? Being friends witha lot of people in the publishing industry, and not a few writers, I found out that a book often is a best-seller before a single copy is sold to the public. Surprised? Here's how it works: The publisher often has to pay huge advances to a potential best-seller author. You betcha they want their money back out of it. So, they decide whether the book will sell steadily off the shelves (in the case of Tom Clancy or Stephen King, this is an easy decision), and then make a print run according to the estimate. When you pay someone a million dollar advance, printing a million copies of the book is a necessity... :-) Anyway, they arrange for the printer and distributors to ship out a million copies, and advertise the heck out of it. If they can "force" enough copies onto their distributors and retailers (the actual methods are beyond the scope of this comment, but sometimes border on the monopolistic), the book will be on the NYT best-seller list even before it goes on sale. If they guessed right, the book sells well, returns millions of dollars profit and the author is gladly supported for another book. If it fails to sell through, the stock is remaindered and the author may face difficulty getting another book contract; at least, one with that much support. Tacky and morally questionable, but fact. (I have ignored some of the complications in order to keep this short) Record industry methods aren't entirely identical, but a record can be made into a hit by dint of advertising and shipping enough copies. Like it or hate it, Alanis's JLP was made into a hit by the record company, independent of its artistic merit. That ugly word, payola, is still a reality in the record business, and there are stations which mysteriously get more perqs from a record label if they play its artists more often. The poor DJ often doesn't have a choice on what to play; his program manager might be leaning on him pretty hard -- and he in turn may be leaned on by the station's busness manager. If Jewel hadn't had an A&R man who believed in her and stood up to the suits in order to get more life out of the album, PoY would probably have become a cutout when the second album was released last Spring. :-/ Thankfully, her fans and a few savvy people in her publicity chain boosted her over that roadblock, by spreading the word and getting her on TV and soundtrack projects. The album started selling from the moment she increased her tour schedule and started appearing on TV more. The record company suits can't argue with increased sales, whether they come from radio airplay or not. You notice I've made no mention of her unarguable talent and charm; they sadly count for less with the record label at this stage of Jewel's career. :-( With YWMFM, there has been little effort on Atlantic's part to advertise the new single or its video; no commercial single release; no showcasing of the song on Jewel's TV appearances. Folks, even if we scream to all of the radio stations in the country, the best we could hope for is a repeat of the WWSYS scenario: slow growth, acceptance, and YWMFM being added to the list of songs that Jewel has to play alog with WWSYS and yodelling. It won't become a hit unless the label supports it. Yes, we must call the radio stations and request it; yes, it will be wonderful if it goes gold. But a hit? Not the way Atlantic is promoting it today. I leave all the moral implications for you angels to ponder. Sorry for rambling so long. I want Jewel to succeed as much as any of you, but keep in mind that when you start talking about "hits", you're talking about politics, not just popularity. I think it would be wonderful if Jewel could make a dozen platinum albums and never get to the level of hype that Michael Jackson, Alanis, and many others achieve. (Again, I say this independently of any judgement on their artistic value) I think it unlikely that her career will grow more rapidly without more support from the record label. Let's do our part and call/write Atlantic as well. Phone numbers or Email addresses, anyone? I'll bug them, too. - -- | Greg Dunn | "Information is not knowledge; | | GregDunn@aol.com | knowledge is not wisdom; | | GregDunn@indy.net | wisdom is not truth." | | http://members.aol.com/gregdunn/ | Frank Zappa | ------------------------------ From: BDamis@aol.com Date: Thu, 10 Oct 1996 15:08:40 -0400 Subject: Re: Rare and Radio Angels I discovered Jewel by accident in February of 1995 and bought POY within days of its release.
