Hi guys! What's up? Not much is going on here. Really. Not much. I now have 5, count 'em FIVE submissions to the cover tape, including mine, thanks to Greg, but it doesn't make me feel any better. And the end of the extension is now over. Now, because one of the organizers to the tape, Tom Proven, still hasn't sent in his own submission, I'm giving the stragglers a few days until I get Tom's tape to get theirs in. He told me he's gonna mail what he has on Friday, so consider that a deadline for everyone else. And considering that Tom is on the west coast, that should give people on the east coast a little advantage by a day or two. But there are some EDAs who have some troubles, which prevent them from sending anything in right now. Rafa had a hurricane, Phil works insane hours, Toni just had an operation, and Kate is waiting for Tom to record some tracks for her. I'm not exactly gonna sit around waiting for submissions, but if I get their tape, I'll do my best to fit them in, because I, Tom, and Katie want everyone to be on this tape. If anything, I want to know what happened to everyone who wanted to be on the tape when it was announced in August. I had enough requests to fill a tape and a half, but right now I barely have enough to fill half a tape. Eric Penna and Lauren? After talking to you guys on AOL, I had complete confidence you two would record and send your stuff in. Aaron Mendelson? You were so enthusiastic about this tape, but I haven't heard from you. Jack? I know you've been busy working overtime after the Neil tour, but couldn't you spare a few minutes to record two songs? Paul Kim? What ever happened to that cello arrangement you wanted to do? Chelsea? Tom hasn't heard from you. Will? I know you were a latecomer, but are you recording definitely? I don't want to sound like I'm picking on anyone in particular, cause I'm picking on all the stragglers. If some people are so resistent on sending in submissions, will this tape be worth treeing? Will people request to be leaves only to never send their blank tape? I mean, it's no big deal if no one else submits to the tape, cause Tom, Katie, and I could record enough filler on our own, but who wants to hear "Tom, Katie, and Eric cover Jewel"? It's called variety, folks. Sorry, if this post sounds too pessimistic, but this project isn't turning out like I thought it would. Treeing Jewel performances is easy, cause she's done all the hard work. Now, this is our chance to do the hard work and show our appreciation to her. Let's get to it. If anyone wants to do a cover for the tape, whether it be with an instrument(s) or a capella, then send me a tape at: Eric Montas 1629 Van Ness Terrace Union, NJ 07083 Include a picture of yourself, if you can, too, because I'm designing a j-card for the tape with pictures of everyone that has contributed. If anyone has questions, feel free to email me. Otherwise, surprise me and send in a tape. Remember, all submissions will be included on the tape, and that there is no limit on the amount of songs you can cover. Thanks. Take care. Mmmmmmmmmmmmm. Aaaaahhhhhhhh.... Hhhnnnnnnnnn... Oh. Sorry! I'm sitting here listening to the JewelStock tapes instead of typing. Silly me. Better get to work. I'm blown away. I've heard CDs from so-called pro studios with less detail and fidelity than this little cassette I'm hearing right now. I'm sure it's been done to death, but a huge THANK YOU to all the many people who made this tree possible. From Alan and his crew down to the folks who are even now sharing it with us. It's eerie listening to a tape of a live performance where one was actually present. All the little nuances come back, sometimes frighteningly clearly. For example, I keep hearing this loud young lady's voice cheering during the applause, as clearly as though she was sitting right behind me. Oh; maybe she was. And there's this geep (in the front row, it sounds like) who keeps yelling "Woohoo!" after every song. What a bozo. The packaging is pretty cool too, Dennis. Though I can't imagine what possessed the graphic artist to put that one picture of Jewel on the cover of the first tape. I'm sure there were many better shots submitted from the "press conference" sequence (as Jewel put it). Killer tapes, guys. I hope everyone who is entitled to a tape gets a chance to hear these soon. Crash Boy brought the beginnings of the Jewel Covers Compilation. You know, the tape of EDAs covering Jewel songs! It is excellent! The tape Crash Boy had already has 8-9 songs on it. The first five (correct me here, Eric) are by Lara(?), and are absolutely incredible! She sounds like a dead ringer for Jewel! Can't wait to hear the whole thing! The following is NOT part of the Bootleg debate: As those there know, I was talking with a 'record store' guy at the Temple show. He had the Salvation CD (the bootleg, for those that are behind). I discussed the boot with him, and he asked lots of questions about the JS tapes. He asked me if we could trade across. I didn't give him an answer. My answer now is NO. Reason being, I don't really need the CD, and he should not have the tapes. I am posting this to the list for this reason: Please, NO ONE TRADE THE TAPES TO HIM. OR ANYONE. Now, READ THIS: I am not involving myself in this debate, nor am I passing any judgement what-so-ever on that guy (Steve is his name). The point is that Steve is not an EDA. And those tapes are not for anyone other than EDAs. PERIOD. That stipulation has been made perfectly clear since the beginning. The JS tapes are only for those who were at JS or on the list at that time and unable to make it. That's it. That is a wonderful gift to us. Let's just accept the gift and be happy with it. (Sorry newbies!!) I myself have considered making copies of the JS Tapes for very close friends that are huge Jewel fans. But even that goes against Jewel's requests. JEWEL's requests, let alone Mike and Alan, the producers. The point is this: don't spin these tapes off for anyone. That is a request from Lenedra, and as so, from Jewel herself. If you are not a branch, you really shouldn't be copying the tapes, unless you are making a back-up for yourself. In this way WE CAN BE SURE that that show will not pop up on some CD made in Turkey. If that show is ever released on CD, it can and will probably be considered a very personal insult to Jewel from us. Simply because she gave us her trust, a small request, and a wonderful concert. Lets just do it!! BTW, there are an awful lot of people that are trying to find and boot JS. As Steve, the record store guy, told me if it's out there, it will show up on an "import". It had better not. I myself got a strange call tonight on my machine, about Jewel and the Temple show and some tapes. Fuck 'em. Look at it this way, those of you that are getting the tapes: you are getting a limited release alblum that will never be available to the public. Be proud and stingy with it! You deserve it!
