Oct. 21 That absence didn't last long did it? No, I'm not back, but the News list has yet to confirm or deny Live 105's claim that Jewel is performing at the Warfield in San Francisco on October 21st. Miss Kilcher isn't trying to pull some Neil Youngish mystery show on us starving Bay Area lame-assed monkeys, is she? Or is KITS the perpetrator? I'm scared of the Fresno Fair now. Supposedly people get killed there all the time in the crossfire of gang warfare. And cars get stolen, though any fool dumb enough to steal Christine deserves her. Someone please write me to set me straight over this damn Warfield thing, and prevent my death at the hands of misguided youths. Lets hope Jeff is a Jewel fan. I also hope Jeff realizes the special unique community he has has helped create. This is by far a better mailing list than any of the others I subscribe to. Being this good will probably make the list even more popular and more taxing on his resourses. As a former owner of a chain of record stores, I did my best to bring in as many customers as possible. I also stocked the stores to fit each unique community I was in. When my stores started getting better known and busier, I didn't tell people to go away and stop shopping as much. I looked for solutions. Many of them were from my customers. With success comes a lot of inconveniences. Look at how hard it is at times to load some web sites. They don't just shut out people on purpose. When this happens, the good sites also find ways to overcome the problems and they don't do it by trying to limit their visitors. > 2:Someone has to cull through all the messages to find the tidbits that go > to the news list. > A request to add NJC to your subject header to facillitate this job does > not seem like censorship to me. I was very much against the news-list at first. But I'm not a close minded person. When James Judd suggested a way to make all sides happy, I changed my mind and supported the proposal. As proposed, the news-list would have alternating moderators made up of volunteers. No one said it would be an easy job. One persons efforts would make life simpler for many. Adding NJC was not a bad suggestion. For those of us that filter our mail or manage it by thread or subject may find this very helpful. Some people forget or don't know they should. Others may feel that their post is Jewel related. I will try my best to help those that like the NJC tag. However, I feel it is all JC because it was JewelPower that brought us all together. You also state that only "tibits" go to the news-list. Doesn't that tell you something. All of the people that write NJC came here because of Jewel. They want to read about Jewel just as much as anyone else. But if there is no Jewel news at the moment, there is nothing wrong with NJC to help get to know each other. If you don't have the time, go to the news-list and come back occasionally when you do. Keep in mind all the "culling through magazines, web sites and tons of other sourses that people go through, just to bring you those "tidbits". As they go through a magazine as an example, do you think they only read it to see if it has JC. Most of these discoveries are made during the time they are enjoying the entire magazine. All of the NJC on this list makes finding those tidbits more fun. > A request that people ask themselves before they post "Is this going to be > of interest to most/many of the several hundred subscribers or should it be > a private email?" does not amount to censorship either. Merely a request > that we excercise our good judgement and restraint. Many very lengthy threads have suprised me. I personally don't like astrology, but a huge number of people did. It is wrong for anyone to say what the subscribers will find of interest. The list has a natural way of limiting content. If the same thread had been started during the JS days, it probably wouldn't have gone very far. Lets trust in democracy. Most of us do make those judgement calls before posting. On the issue of private mail. I write mostly private mail. I only did so after I got to make friends on the list. Yea, a few people post private mail publicly, but its only a few. I also think this letter has interest for a large part of the group. No posts have universal appeal. This is PART 1 of my reply to Dave. This part of his letter was friendly and in the spirit of the list and its subscribers. I tried my best to respond in kind. I promise you that being nice is a new quality of mine. I do not pretend to be anything I'm not. I try my best to say what I mean. I can not promise that PART II will be as nice. My first thought is to tear David a new ass-hole. I fear no one, but I respect everyone until they prove they don't deserve my respect. The people that I don't respect, don't get any mercy from me. People that stand up for what they believe and do so in the right way, get all of my respect regardless if I agree if them or not. Before I write PART II, I'm going to sleep on it. Mike ------------------------------ From: Aaron Matthew Suever Date: Mon, 30 Sep 1996 00:46:26 -0400 (EDT) Subject: LC stuff, and sorry guys, and double emails Hey, it looks I may have started an icky mess in here. I kinda missed the last few days, and I haven't figured out exactly what happened yet. James and Igor, are we going to have to separate you two? Please everybody cut James some slack. He's a really nice guy, honest, I've met him. And I respect him. He puts a lot of thought into what he's trying to say and he has good intentions, even if you don't agree with him. He's a little cranky lately because so much is going on with the list, but I can assure you that it's only because he loves Jewel so much. Our little list is a lot to handle, for him and many other devoted, but busy, fans, and it's obvious that he's feeling frustrated. As far as the emperor of smurfs, Dave's been on the list a long time too. He is also a very devoted fan of Jewel and has lots of stuff. He's a real collector. But he doesn't get into the list bonding that much. He's here for Jewel stuff, not so much for Jewel people. Also a pretty smart guy, like James. He has a tendency to get defensive if you attack him. Go figure. But he's fine to talk to otherwise. Dave, I know you don't like "wasting" your time with some of this, but it may be time to make a choice. If you want to continue being the ultimate devoted fan, you may just have to learn to accept this as a cost. Who said being a big fan would be easy? If I'm wrong on this, guys, correct me. I gave up trying to collect all the Jewel stuff I could find long ago. But everybody, Guitar World Acoustic mag *is* pretty cool. The same issue that features Miss Kilcher has stuff about Suzanne Vega, Lyle Lovett, Ani DiFranco, Black Crowes, DMB, CS&N and some transcriptions for the musically inclined. Even though I'm not a DMB fan, I found the interview very interesting. Oh yeah, they talk about Jars of Clay and Patti Rothberg too. And there are all sorts of guitar and music equipment ads in it. Neat! As far as double emails go, this is somewhat annoying when you're on the loose-mail form, but if you get the digest, a personally-addressed message will really stand out from the stack of serial-numbered digests that pile up so quickly. Not that I replied any faster to James' response to me :( And someone, I think it was James, mentioned being mildly annoyed by multiply posted news messages, e.g. four people announcing the same thing. While this can be irritating if you read every post, for some of us who skip a digest here and there, or have to eenie-meenie-miny-moe which ones to read in the morning, it's actually a bonus because we have a better chance of hearing about it. If it's not re-posted there's a 50/50 chance it wasn't of earth-shattering importance. And what if someone has a really good bit of news, but hasn't had the time to keep up with their mail recently? Should they not post? If they *are* the only one with that news, we may all miss out by the time they finish their email. I always hear people crying out when their freedom of speech is threatened. Igor is certainly an activist on this subject, and more vocal than most. And very few of us would argue against it anyway. But why is it that when people bring up the subject of freedoms they don't also bring up the subject of responsibility? Freedom and responsibility go absolutely hand-in-hand, and I hardly ever hear anyone really talking about that second part. This is meant to be a general observation, rather than one of the list. I used to feel that it was a real problem with the list as well, but my opinion changed when I got to meet some of these EDA's in person, and as I got to know some of them better through email. Let me tell you, they are real people and wonderful, if you couldn't tell from the posts. If you don't really have any ties with other people on the list, then this aspect is much less meaningful. Which brings me to an observation about newbies. If you haven't picked up on this yet, there are two main groups of posters: the newbie and the long-time core member. Many newbies go through a phase after their first post in which they write quite a few messages to the list. This period introduces them to the rest of us, and allows them to get to know some of us more through email. You can't really talk to anyone new unless one of you posts, or someone you already know introduces you to someone else. Right now, I don't know if you've noticed, but except for a few concert reports and reviews of the new video, there isn't much to say. So what's a newbie to do? Most people are okay with the introduction post -"Hi, my name is...". And this may get some responses. But I myself rarely have the time to respond. On the one hand I wouldn't mind having more free time with a minimally active list during Jewel droughts, but other people need to make some contacts. Just try not to be too frivolous though. This is everybody's time that you spend here. (But I *liked* many of the recent threads, at least at first). Don't almost all threads live too long? This is just the nature of threads, yes? The talk is not over until after it's clear that people want to change the topic. I think everything that could be said about bootlegs has been said, and said well. I'm not too into it tho. The only bootlegs *I* happen to have are ones that I've gotten from this list. And Linus, I loved your idea about treeing that disc that caused all the controversy, so everyone could get copies without paying the evil bootleggers. It seems so fair. Oh man, this is way too long. Nobody's going to read it. I never get more than a couple responses on list and off. If there was anything in here worth reading, someone please encourage others to do so. You know, if it gets mentioned more than once, it might be important :) Aaron (a.k.a. Gonzo, but so far only by myself :/ ) p.s. after dusting off the worst albums in my collection, I've decided I'm not embarassed by any of them. A few are just bad, that's all. But I loved Wiggy's expose on Mr. Connell's collection (hehehehehehehe) :P ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V1 #635 ***************************
