Mammoth/Atlantic's Pure are the opening act, and will also be featured in the broadcast. During the show, we'll be chatting with Poe and members of Pure, as well as showing videos and the occasional surprise. The cybercast is part of Ms. Poe's first-ever headlining tour - -- with The Eels and Pure in support -- which began on Sept. 14 in Tulsa and carries on cross-country through Nov. 7 -- check our "On The Road" area for a complete itinerary. As always, Poe will continue to do cyberchats at various stops during her tour dates -- keep your eyes here for updates, and be sure to check out the gorgeous Poe pictorial in this month's Vogue. Meanwhile, Poe's debut album, "HELLO," continues to soar up the charts as the "Angry Johnny" single and video lead the way. We're still reeling from Poe's performance at the jam-packed George magazine party held at the Art Institute Of Chicago on August 27th during the Democratic Convention. Poe wowed what is almost undoubtedly her most star-studded audience yet: George domo John F. Kennedy Jr., his uncle (Senator) Ted Kennedy, Rep. Joe Kennedy, Aretha Franklin, Kevin Costner, Chelsea and Roger Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, George Stephanopolous, Sargent, Eunice, and Maria Shriver, and William Kennedy Smith. To avoid any possible misperception of "Angry Johnny"'s caustic lyrics, Poe retitled the song "Angry Gordon Liddy" for this one special night. She also chatted on George Online after the event. On many occasions, when a letter was posted, that endorsed any kind of censorship, I have come out with boxing gloves on. When our own government tried to sneak in censorship, almost every web site showed their position on the issue by including blue ribbons. Many sites went totally black, in protest. Our right to freedom of speak was being attacked. To some it seemed only fair to allow a bit of censorship if it would get rid of the people trading in child pornography. Who would argue with that? We the people can get rid of the scum. We don't need someone deciding what is good or bad for us. It usually starts with the obvious like child porn, that most will agree on. Before you know it, someone is judging for us, such as if we should be exposed to naked, uncovered belly-buttons. First it is going to be something many of us will agree on. To much mail! Then NJC will be targeted. Then certain kinds of NJC. Before you know it, only certain people will be allowed to post. This list has been a great equalizer. I have been allowed to live on the same pages as the genius wordsmith Dennis Harris. On the same pages, we have the ever so pleasant and silly and young Liz. She was one of my favorite reads, ever since I got on the list. We have heard so much NJC from her like boyfriend problems, "I hate school", my best friend did this and that. Those of you that hate NJC should read some of her stuff carefully. You will start reading hints of a very intelligent girl. She is growing up right in front of us. Many of the same people that are complaining now, would have tried to limit her early silly letters. She has really showed how she is maturing with a few things she said in her report from Temple. Let me just quote one thing. > We all got to know each other even better. It was a lot of fun. It is > amazing how we all connected. We hung out for awhile and headed back. I > really enjoyed my day, I got to know some of the angels a lot better and > I felt like I belonged. It was really special. It is amazing how Jewel > has brought us together...it makes me feel warm and tingly inside. I was > very proud of my angels today and I know a good time was had by all. > Thank you to everyone that made my fouth Jewel experience WONDERFUL!!!! > I hope to see you all again in the near future!!!! Man I love my life!!! You see, it was more than just Jewel. Even a young 15 year old understands more than those critics. She understands what this is all about. The other reason I like to see a free list is because it also lets the jerks surface. Usually after a few letters, most of us can see through them. They bury themselves with the more they write. Just after reading Liz's letter, I came upon this one. You be the judge. David wrote: > > Aloha- > > With all the NJC on this list of late (not to mention the distinctly > negative vibes that have emanated from certain quarters when this bad habit > was pointed out in a kindly fashion) I thought I'd add some JC: > > I have a master copy of Jewels' set opening for Neil Young on Aug.18. Was the writer I attacked pointing out in a kindly fashion or was he arragant. The emperor did defend his letter and then followed up with news about a Jewel boot. Of course this could lead into a thread on bootlegs. Hawaii Dave does a similar thing. He goes into the next paragraph with a Jewel tape trade. Must be a nice guy, right. Wrong! Read his words. He is discussing trading Jewel's intellectual property as if he owned it. You are trading stolen property. You think Jewel will be happy to see EDA's not only trading her IP, but acting as if it is something they have a right to. He acts like a little kid. Na na na na na na, I got it and you can't have it. Well I don't want it. I think after people read your letter carefully, not many will want to trade with you. There are always a few that don't care who they do business with. He includes me on the same line as bootleg CD merchants. The professional bootleggers are members of almost every popular mailing list out there on the internet. Thats how they find most of there material. So Dave will eventually trade with one of them. He may not know it, but he will. BTW, those tapes that are marked made in Czechoslovakia, are probobly made right here in the US. Did you know that the country of Czechoslovakia does not exist any more. It is two countries now, Chech and Slovakia. Those tape would have never made it past customs. I plan on writing Dave DiCiccio privately. It doesn't matter that we disagree. My hope is that I find that I was completely wrong about him. James Judd and I have written privately before. I won't let one letter end what has been a very nice friendship. I hope he agrees as well. However, Mike, the above quotes indicate that you would have rather the existance of the bootleg never revealed. I disagree with this. Although I won't buy it, I like being warned about it. I am also more that a little dismayed that people can rationalize buying it. The purchaser of an illegal cd is just as guilty as the people who make and sell it. Plus, they are the ones who create the demand by their willingness to buy them, which probably makes them even more culpable. If an artist or label wants to wait to release live performances for whatever reason, what gives us the right to usurp their wishes and their rights to do that. It's stealing their future worth. Excuse me?? Fellow EDAs, Considering no one else "called" this fellow on this, I must. A very misinformed EDA, whom I shall not name, said (about the list): > We all, despite our flaws (Harris Bros.) and our good points (Selena) > are communicating and belong to a kind of family, a tribe if you will, > and our part of that is being on the EDA list and the NJC. HarrisBros is a flaw? A FLAW?? The person who wrote this obviously has not reading the stuff on the list well enough to realize what an incredibly wrong comment that was. (Unless I misunderstood...was he joking?) Just in case he wasn't joking: EDAs, please excuse me while inform this person. Dennis Harris (HarrisBros) spent DAYS putting together a website for JewelStock to help nearly 280 EDAs who planned on going to find the place, find a place to camp or lodge, inform them of other activities, places to eat...anything to HELP EDAs have a much better time than they would have without the site. He spent HOURS (i.e. $$$) on the phone with me compiling information for this site. (50/50 on the calls, we both called) Dennis Harris stayed up past 3am the night before JewelStock making dozens of JewelStock buttons that he gave out free to everyone from EDAs, townspeople, Patty Griffin & Co, Jewel & Lenedra. Due to high demand he made more after the event and mailed them out. (Still is) Dennis Harris singlehandedly got the crowd at the Friday JewelStock show riled up enough to *DRAG* Jewel out for a 3rd, three song encore. Jewel HERSELF mentioned the "Harris Brothers" during that vert encore. Dennis Harris spent DAYS putting together a website to help nearly 4 dozen EDAs again get together at the Casino Ballroom show at Hampton Beach. Dennis Harris spent DAYS designing STUNNING J-card inserts for the JewelStock Tapes and HOURS (i.e. $$$) printing out said cards for up to 500 EDAs and their tapes. All this for people he knew only by their EMAIL addresses 3 months ago. What have you done for this list? If HarrisBros is a "flaw", may 1000 more of them sign on to the list this week! And another thing. Quit sucking up to Selena. While I adore Selena with all my being, what has her posts contributed to this list that HarrisBros has not? Want me to send you 100 digests to prove my point? By the way, I am *not* dissin' Selena at all. I talked with her on the phone about this on Friday so there is no misunderstanding, as we all know that the written word can be easily taken out of context. She's behind me 200%. I am certain (IMHO) that EDAs *talking* about it (on the list) as a "must find/must have" is not good. Yes, my letter came across that I am against "talking" about it at all. My fault...as I am all for "talking" about it (the bootleg CD) as being bad. However, I DO feel that it was a bad idea to put it on the News-list. Everything I "read into" the news-lists' info-page tells me it was set up to inform the EDAs on that list of the legitimate/approved Jewel information. Below is from the official Jewel-news FAQ/info page: - --------- These are the current message subject lines: TOUR SCHEDULE - tour schedules TICKET INFO - dates when tickets go on sale COMPACT DISC RELEASE - release dates for albums, singles, sdtrks, promos TV/RADIO APPEARANCE - tv and radio appearances ELECTRONIC MEDIA APPEARANCE - chat sessions, electronic Q&A sessions, etc. PRINT MEDIA APPEARANCE - newspaper, magazine, and other print articles SET LIST - very brief concert reviews concentrating on set lists MISCELLANEOUS - anything else - --------- I realize that "Miscellaneous" is wide open, but I just never though the News-list was a venue to advertise things that Jewel and her management are clearly against. I'm wondering if I should wake them.. just for the heck of it. It is a beautiful day and they are missing out on it. I guess I will let them sleep. I seem to enjoy each concert more than the last. I had both children with me this time. Ryan, my race car driver, wore my 'I'm Sensitive' shirt. Krystal wore her 'Jewel' shirt. They both looked adorable. Jared (superdeformed) hoisted Ryan on to his shoulder to advertise the shirt, when Jewel mentioned them. Ryan looked sooo cute. Jewel made eye contact with him and smiled and winked. OMIGOD!! DENNIS!! Ryan had your one button autographed. The one with no writing, just the "J" on it. Her autograph looks like it belongs there. He is laminating it today.. so it never smears. Jewel paused during autographs for both of my children. She made eye contact with them and smiled very genuinely. Her face lit up. She really seemed to be tickled to have them there. I think my son Ryan, is going to be a 'Dennis' type of guy. He asked the security guard which exit Jewel would be exiting from, and he was off and running to find her. Ryan is a kid who manages to be in the right place, at the right time. He makes things happen. I was so proud of my kids. They really enjoy the EDA events and the people. We met some great Jewel fans. One guy, and his girlfriend, stood out in my mind. They begged me to inform them of the next eda gathering. He has no computer, but he is a true EDA. He made me read his address back to him, just to make sure I got it right. I now officially pronounce Joseph Benchert, of NJ, an EDA. And I am printing this letter out and mailing it to him.. just so he knows that he made it. Matthew Milner disappeared after the show. Where did you get to Matthew? I really enjoyed Bryan (hiroshi sp?) and his girlfriend. It is so great to become close to more of you at each show. Jewelstock was so overwhelming and we didnt have the time to become really close. I think we were just so freaked out to be there. Patric Oesterheld was just like I was at JS. He was walking on a cloud.. pretty pumped up. He is definitly one of us. I'll bet his feet are still not touching the ground. Hey, I have to say this.. cant help it. This guy is gorgeous. And for all you single girls.. he is unattached. Jon Reade was really funny. Crunch and Jon were interviewed by some tv people. Right in the middle of it..Jon started choking on a french fry. You would have to hear Jon and Crunch tell the story. It is so funny. We met a lurker. Hey, Lurker.. you know who you are. Post already. You know, I didn't see one single drunk person at the show. Of course.. later on when we got home... Liz took many pictures. And my 16 yr. old stepson was snapping photos left and right. I might just have to confiscate the cameras, while they are sleeping. Here is the full piece. Jewel, the singer-songwriter whose debut album, Pieces of You, is climbing the charts, finally is getting some attention. Tell me more about her. Is she seeing anyone? Once loosely linked to Sean Penn (before he married Robin Wright), Jewel, 22, has no beau at present. Born Jewel Kirchner in an Alaska town of 4,000, she knows the meaning of the word "hardship". Foolish Games IMO is the best song on the album but I can't imagine hearing it on the radio it's so beautiful, not poppy or alternative enough. Morning song is upbeat happy & would be more poppy (doesn't need much more though) if they added some form of drum beat in it. It was so cool to meet everyone there. I wasn't really sure what I was in for. Everyone was normal(no comments on the sender!:) ), and really nice. I know I can't remember everyone's names and stuff- I'm horrible at remembering things like that- but all were cool. I saw the van pull in at the entrance gates with all the blue ribbons- a dead giveaway! We rode back to the parking lots, and Selena introduced everyone. We watched the concert, got autographs (I got POY,WofOZ,and ticket signed. When she saw WofOZ, she said"Is this out already? Is it good?" I told her she was in it-it had to be awesome. She said "I want to hear it."She is soooo beautiful. Then, back for party. Little tidbits-- Selena- like a mom to all of us. She was so sweet-she had packed up food and drink forus. Brought tons of stuff to see & hear. I'm not afriad of her--I think I'm in love;) She was awesome-thanks for getting us tix and looking out for us. coolest thing- Selena knowing the words to flower and Jewel not!! That shows how dedicated the fans are! Also cool- Jewel asked what we wanted to hear- I yelled 100 miles away she kept saying "what?"- she pointed at me- I said 100 miles away, and she said ok. She didn't play it though. It was a short set. Why was Tony Rich the headliner? He has 1 no. 1 hit, but Jewel has outsold him, I'm sure(can anyone with a Billboard back me up?). ok, I'm babbling. OK- last thing- Getting together made me realize what this list really is- it's not about JC or NJC- it's about PWCAEOAJ- people who care about each other and jewel(but it's harder to put in a letter heading). By finally getting to a concert, I realized that all the posts that I read(and sometimes don't) are little pieces of everyone's personality. If we were talking on a phone- would we hang up if the person on the other end stopped talking about Jewel? Of course not. The real significance of the listgroup is not the list of messages we get everyday, it's the GROUP. Being with the members of the group made this concert so special- instead of just being a concert(watch the music, drive home) it was a Jewel tailgate party, with a concert and autograph session thrown in. One more time(you're gonna get sick of hearing this) Thanks Selena. Thanks to everyone else, too. You all(OK I'm a southerner--Y'all) made my day very special.
