But earlier this year she was just another Dorothy wannabe. Jewel sang the Dorothy role in a performance of "The Wizard of Oz, in Concert," which was taped at Lincoln Center ans was shown on cable. That concert is now available on CD as "The Wizard of Oz in Concert: Dreams Come True." Other performers are recent Spirit Festival guest Jackson Browne as the Scarecrow, Rodger Daltrey as the Tin Man, Nathan Lane as the Cowardly Lion. Again, all I ask is that you think about this. I'm not asking for agreement or anything. Parts are excerpts from a note I wrote Dan Stark long before Jewelstock. I can tell you that I've recieved a lot of private email from various people who have said they absolutely NEED DAT recordings of Jewel for this purpose. I have turned them all down and caught a lot of sh*t because of it. Most offer me free copies of the CD (and are nice people,I'm sure), but a few have offered $$$ which leads me to believe that a bootlegger will eventually take advantage of Jewel's popularity. While it is inevitable, that someone is going to end up doing a boot CD of her, I want no part of it!! This is exactly the situation that puts me in a very precarious position. Do I provide tapes that will wind up in the wrong hands KNOWINGLY? I surely don't want to. Regardless of any legal implications, the emergence of "Bootleg CDs for sale" may jeopardize future free distribution of high quality archive tapes on this list. Its a common sense precautionary measure from my standpoint. We may also want to consider the fact that it puts Lenedra in a position, where as Jewel's manager, she may be forced to cut all ties to a list that is facilitating or promoting these things. At minimum, projects like The Jewelstock Tape Tree could become a thing of the past. :-( So the proliferation of "bootlegs for sale" can effect a lot of great things about this list. The artist and/or Record Company aren't the only ones that may be worse off. -Alan(MrBB) ------------------------------ From: tom morales Date: Fri, 27 Sep 1996 15:36:53 +0700 Subject: Re: Pedro Zamora AIDS Benefit Tell me about it. This is because the artist/record company doesn't have to pay for costly studio time, and the performance is done all in one take (unless the artist decides to do overdubs, which kinda defeats the purpose of a live album, anyway). They just plug a recorder into the sound board and away they go. The only real expense in the prodution of a live album would be in mixing the master tape of the show. - --Garrett ------------------------------ From: Stephen Ivy Date: Fri, 27 Sep 1996 23:17:21 -0500 Subject: Bootlegs Bottom line people! I'm a newbie to Jewel and this mailing list, but I totally agree with what you're saying. I've never been to a Jewel concert or heard any songs except from her Pieces of You CD. To me, she's just a great singer, and I can hardly pretend to know her a person. But what I see in her music is a deep appreciation of human beings and a concern for this world. I hope to find more of her music and hear "the racecar song", which I'm always hearing about. I don't know how Jewel would do as an actress, but I know the perfect role she could play. If you have ever read 'Road To Nowhere', the main character, Teresa Chafey, is a high school girl who gets an audition to play in a club. When I'm reading the book again, I can really picture Jewel as playing this part. While listening to her music, I can picture the character singing that for her show and for her boyfriend. I won't type any of her songs for you all, but they somewhat "sound" like Jewel songs. I've been in several mailing lists and have even created one of my own, and I've gone through lots of similar conversations. But frankly, I can see why some people like myself would want to leave this mailing list without getting the full value out of it. I can see lots of comradery among the "older" EDA's, and I think that's really great. I'd also like to interact with other Jewel fans, and maybe it will help me grow in my "Jewel maturity." But please, enough with defending your opinions and arguing about NJC. Nuff said? (You stole my quote Amy!!!) If you have anything to say to me, e-mail ME, not the whole list. It's just courtesy. About NJC, I strongly agree with this type of discussion. Oddly enough, what got me hooked on Jewel was not hearing WWSYS, but reading the lyrics from Pieces of You. And these were shared to the whole group by someone in my mailing list, which obviously isn't about Jewel. When I read them, I knew Jewel had something special, and I had to get in on it. The vehicle was covered in blue ribbons. The driver Selena Martin and front passenger Barry Martin were arrested for child endangerment. When Mrs. Martin was asked to identify herself, she kept on telling them, "Don't you know who I am? I'm the Golden Goddess!" When Cadet Officer DiCicco asked to see some ID, she refused and then told the Officer she was part of the Harris Clan. Officer Wasilko was at first only going to cite them for a minor infraction of driving with an overloaded vehicle but then discovered that all twelve passengers appeared to be seat belted. The vehicle was only designed for seven. He found the horrifying truth was that all the passengers were being restained in all forms of sexual bondage. While the Martin's were being hand-cuffed, they offered no resistence. A unidentified young man who claimed to be from Virginia, kept begging to be hand-cuffed next. He was dressed in an all leather outfit and had a purple bear with him. Cadet Officer DiCicco said it reminded him of some horrible movie he once saw, but could not recall the name of it. One of the passengers yelled, "King of Comedy". He claimed to be a movie trivia freak. The Officer only agreed with the freak part. As the Officers further investigated, they were shocked by what they found. In the rear of the vehicle was a small animal cage. It was only big enough for two small dogs. They found two teenagers from Ohio stuffed into the cage. It seemed to be an immossible feat because the one teenager was six feet tall. They also found a male in his thirtys. dress in the rear part of a horse costume and he kept calling Mrs Martin "mommy". The Officers took into evidence, a stack of mail found in the van. Cadet Officer DiCicco quotes the proof found in the CONTENT of one of the letters. > Hi my angels, > I am sitting at Selena's computer right now. Shelly and I tied Barry > and Selena up and threw them in the closet... At the station while being booked, this reporter was able to get a few exclusive words from the group. They were upset by the way the on Officer handled the whole thing. They felt they were only having a little safe fun and he needed to lighten up. They felt he was arrogant. Cadet Officer DiCicco said > i am am merely echoing thevalues that my mom taught me: be kind and > respectful of other people's time and think before you speak > > i guess mom taught me to have an "attitude" > They also remarked that Officer Wasilko was right to be concerned about the overloaded van. He seemed to be fair. DiCicco did show some knowledge of movie trivia when he compared the scene to the movie "Pink Flamingos" Well at least the Officer has a good taste in movies. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V1 #629 ***************************
