I joke quite a bit at the beginning, but there is a point to this. Amelia S. Vlah wrote: > this seems to an amusing little series. and I unfortunately have a pretty > bad one... > Debbie Gibson "Forever Blue" complete with the teased feathered hair and > scarey hat on the cover. go ahead, beat that :) As someone who just listed her debut album _Out_Of_The_Blue_ in his essential CDs list, I can tell you that if you have a CD, cassette, LP, or even *8-track*, that: 1) is indeed a Debbie Gibson work, 2) has a cover with her featuring both the teased hair AND a hat, 3) is actually called "Forever Blue" You have the ONLY existing bootleg (not even a copy, since no other examples exist) of her from the 86-88 time period. :D :D :D This would mean your contribution is actually something that many collectors, not all of them DG fans, would treasure greatly. ;) On a more musical note, I do find this example more than a little insulting. I can understand someone not liking Deb's music (I can call her Deb, I have a flashlight autographed by her ), but the only thing you have to identify her is a very muddy recollection of what she LOOKED like. Do you actually remember what any of her songs sounded like without help? That you felt a need to attack her looks, instead of just leaving it as being a Debbie Gibson album, concerns me. (anal retentive style facts:) The teased hair was what she looked like from 86, with a somewhat intermittent transition out of taking until 88 to finalize. She was 16 years old when it started. For those who were 16 in 1986, please go back to the yearbooks that year, and note that a LOT of girls had teased feathered hair. Guess what. Deborah, the person, (who is also Debbie Gibson, a stage name then at Atlantic) was a NORMAL 16 year old. The hats, while they showed up in concert, didn't show up in pictures until Electric Youth, her second album, by which point she had straight, longer hair. I happen to like hats, btw, and if I could find as many hats that looked as good on me as all of hers did on her, I'd be a happier camper. Now, the excessive MAKEUP, I'll fault, but it was, again, typical of High School students at the time. Well, I'm actually tying this into Jewel. Tell me, folks. In 10 years, am I going to hear people "confessing" to owning a Jewel CD, "complete with that awful tooth" and such? While I'd like to believe things can change, no doubt plenty of people who are now Jewel "fans" have no doubt missed the point. They like Jewel because it's cool to like her. No, I still don't agree that Jewel would be better off not being as popular. Quite simply, I don't think her earlier fans are any more immune to this shallow error of judgement as later ones. Indeed, perhaps it's the later fans who missed the initial promotional efforts who can learn to more deeply appreciate the music. Personally, I'll venture to say, it's the fans who listen and understand on their own, regardless of when they discover it, who may or may not see the flat, static pictures, but know, truly KNOW, there is a wonderful, dynamic, living angel creating this. (as I remain in non-Lurker-dom) I recently started playing the guitar and I've been trying to get a hold of the guitar music for Jewel's songs... I've done it before, no big deal. Both addresses I have (www.blandest.com & members/aol.com/jeweltabs -- or something like that, you know what I mean) are not working... the "jeweltabs" one is giving me a message of "NOT FOUND ON THIS SERVER" and the "blandest" one just won't connect at all. Has anyone else has these difficulties? Is my computer just playing mean tricks to me? What's up? This gal has given me some serious education in 1970s/1980s music, and I concur -- these bands are seriously neglected by music historians. True, they aren't U2 or REM or The Police, but they're worthy bands and quite hypnotic in their intensity at times. I considered myself well educated in oddball bands till I started paying attention to this young lady. - -- | Greg Dunn | "Information is not knowledge; | | GregDunn@aol.com | knowledge is not wisdom; | | gregdunn@indy.net | wisdom is not truth." | | http://members.aol.com/gregdunn/ | -- Frank Zappa | ------------------------------ From: BTabora@aol.com Date: Thu, 26 Sep 1996 00:20:04 -0400 Subject: Jewel In Gainsville Hello, This is my first post.
