I'm pretty sure I got it from a record club and I think my sister's influence may have had something to do with it, but it's really pretty diametrically opposed to both her and my "standard" musical tastes, so just what possessed me/us to get this cd remains a mystery. Even at the time, I'm not sure I ever listened to it all the way through, but (because I figure the money I'd get trading it in wouldn't be worth the effort of doing so) I've still got it sitting on a shelf at home. The second-place least-listened to cd would have to be a collection of tape-recorder experiments done by William Burroughs in the early 70s; a few monologues, mostly random noises spliced together, and almost completely unlistenable (at least, more than once, which is what I gave it). I know that Burroughs has released more "albums" which seem to be him reciting monologues and poems over a musical background, but that's not what this cd is. However, even though I never listen to it, I have no desire to get rid of it and, far from being embarrassed, actual think it's kind of "cool". Aside from those two, a few things I was given as gifts, and some older stuff that I liked at the time but have since "outgrown," I'm pretty satisfied with my entire record/tape/cd collection and still listen to most of them pretty often. Do you think Michel was jealous at all? I know it was just acting but I can't help to wonder. Also....the clip that they show twice with Jewel's profile, I noticed that Jewel resembles our very own Amy/WIGGY...you know the shot when she has her hair pulled back and I think she has like something brown on...do you know which clip I am talking about? I've decided to emerge from the shadows of Lurker-dom and expose myself to the world (credit Tom Proven for this -- he gave me permission to flash myself to you all!) A little bit about me and my Jewelness: I first happened upon Jewel in May of '95 (or April, I'm trying to figure out which). My brother had brought home a copy of this new CD called "Pieces of You" which he (ahem) sort of swiped from the radio station he worked at... The first song I ever heard was "Adrian" .. my brother and I decided that it must be a true story because of the amounts of emotion in it (you may remember several months ago when I briefly emerged from Lurker-dom to ask if "Adrian" was a real story -- alas, my brother and I were wrong). So I borrowed the CD, made a copy of it, figured out my favorite songs ("Painters" and "Adrian" at the time) and went on my merry way, finishing up high school etc. Jump to: last year I introduced a few people to Jewel once I hit college and immediately had several rooms in a single dorm hooked. Then I discovered THE INTERNET! And found (yes, ladies and gentlemen) Everday Angels... The rest is history. I turned into a Lurker, not contributing (except to ask questions) until one day Tom Proven convinced me to go public (we started conversing when I was given his address to get a copy of Radio Angels). So that brings me to today... Why do I like Jewel? Being a heterosexual female, I can't say that I like her because "she's hot" (in fact, I never ever saw her perform until earlier this year--I've had the CD for well over a year and had only seen the pictures there) ... She has an exceptional story telling capability that by far surpasses what I see in most singers. She has the ability to create life in fictional characters (Adrian being the most prominent example off the top of my head) and she puts herself in so many different types of characters, it's amazing. Her voice itself changes depending on what she's singing... I'm not a guitarist, so I can't comment on that (I've heard several people say that he stuff isn't that complicated, but who am I to say? I started learning the guitar a week ago.. it sounds pretty impossible to me!) but her melodies are haunting and beautiful. She represents what I think a lot of people would like to do but are too afraid of (and for good reason; it's hard!) I would love to go move into my car and surf (maybe), write poetry, and sing... but it's not practical, and I'm afraid that I'm in a groove that I can't get out of. But it's okay. Being in college now does get me the education I need for my career... but it'd be fun to say "Ah, screw it all!" and do what a friend of mine did: after high school graduation, she moved to Boston and now waitresses and writes poetry... Anyway (I get stuck on tangents easily) that is why I like Jewel... And by the way... I was sadly a Lurker at the Hampton Beach show (yes, I didn't participate in JewelStock 3). Call me anti-social if you will (however, I was with a non-EDA friend who wouldn't have appreciated me up and leaving) ... I did see two JS shirts though and almost introduced myself. The table I was sitting at was right at the aisle for the men's bathroom so (after the beer got flowing) I saw lots and lots and lots of guys getting up (I swear every man in the Ballroom must haven't gotten up at least twice!) Slight exaggeration; I'm not trying to offend anyone. Anyway, this has a purpose: during Eleanor McEvoy's second song (wow! she was good! I ran out and bought her CD) some guy with a JewelStock shirt went to the men's restroom... It was a while ago, I agree, and you may not exactly recall when you went to the bathroom, but I did at least *see* one Every Day Angel even if you didn't see me... (the second shirt I saw could've been anyone... it was right after the concert ended) So perhaps I may retreat back to Lurker-dom for awhile... Perhaps not. Wasn't the NH great? I liked how she added in the "red carnation in my lapel" during "Race Car Driver" I also noticed a few people mentioning the various (drunk?) people yelling out "YODEL! YODEL!! YODEL!" and how disrespectful that is. I totally agree, but I'll mention that it was a lot worse at the Paradise show in Boston last May (which, if you remember, was a *lot* smaller... but more people yelled at the top of their lungs... something to think about) I guess that's about it. I welcome myself to the Land of Non-Lurkers. I hope you will allow me into its realm. Kate P.S. Angels, Hey all! Just felt like posting about my good fortune! (Gee, this posting stuff sure gets in the blood quickly...lurker no more!) Disclaimer: There is Jewel Content here, but it's nothing earth-shattering, so skip if you must! =) Yesterday sucked! All day long at work I could've sworn it was another Monday! but...Wow! What a turn-around! I went home feeling really depressed, so I plunked down in front of the tv and turned on the tube. For some reason, I felt compelled to turn on VH-1 for the first time in weeks, determined to MAKE them show the new video for me! ;) It was like 6:50 and they were wrapping up some random video segment and the guy says "and now we'll wrap things up with Jewel..." YES!!! I leapt for the remote and nailed the REC button! Woohoo! ....PSYCH!!! On comes Who Will Save Your Soul.... ARGH! I've seen THAT one! BUT, I hadn't recorded it, so it was still all good. =) So, the video ends and I'm stopping the tape to rewatch it and I hear "coming up next: VH-1 Duets with Melissa Ethridge". YES!!! More Jewel to tape! So I got all three of the songs she did on that show too! =) Well, the rest of the evening schedule looked bleak so I moved on... But at a little after 11, I tuned back in on a whim and Crossroads was starting. Well, the Jewel vibe had been so strong with me already, I knew I could make them play YWMFM if I concentrated. So, coming back from commercial I knew full-well that they'd cut right into it and try to make me miss the beginning, but I tricked em by starting the tape early and lo and behold: I GOT IT! =) (Course there was a sound glitch three quarters of the way through...guess it was their way of getting back at me for tricking em ;) I like this vid a lot more than WWSYS, but that might just be because I could make a little sense out of this one! ;) If a video gets too deep, I drown pretty easily! And then, there's the wading pool of music videos.... yes, you guessed it. I AM talking about Alanis' new video. I accidentally caught it on MTV and all I can say is "What the !^%#& was that crap?!" Did they mistakenly think they were shooting a Noxzema commercial and decided to show what good pores she has? Did they go overbudget creating those 3 clones for the last video and have to skimp on this one? Did somebody put their project off until the day before it was due? Did Alanis accidentally wonder aloud to the director: "I wonder what I look like to the microphone"? Quite an effort for MTV's video award winner..... =P Anyway, sorry for going on so... Later, Rob PS To my JS leaves: Did you guys get my group instruction mailing or did I screw it up?
