Please ignore if you already have signed up | - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- First of all, ALL AUSTRALIAN BRANCHES AND LEAVES!! Please ignore this post, your situation will be handled seperately after this portion of the tree closes. Listen (listen?), PLEASE read EVERY word of this post. Many of you are experienced tape "leaves" and/or "branches". However, many are not and may be totally lost in this. This post is written for their benefit...the rookies. So veterans, please bear with me and read all of this ALSO so YOU don't miss anything. Alan and I have spent ungodly hours preparing this tree. Please spend the few minutes it will take to read this whole post. Print it out if you have to. (I suggest you do) A SYNOPSIS OF THE PROCEDURE: This part of the JewelStock Tapes Tree is a THREE tape set. You (the leaf) will EMAIL me during your specified time period (shown later in this post) requesting tapes. I will assign you to a branch and EMAIL the both of you within a week, likely sooner. The branch will contact you when it is time for you to mail him/her blank tapes. That may be two or three weeks from now, so be patient, if it is to be longer, he/she will contact you. You will then send blank tapes per instructions below and/or dictated by your branch. The branch will copy the tapes for you and mail them back. You then listen to these wonderful tapes in bliss. - ---------- ELIGIBILITY FOR TAPES: To receive the JewelStock Tapes as a leaf, you must have been a member of either the Jewel, Jewel-Digest or Jewel-News mailing lists as of 12:01am EST Monday September 16, 1996. There will be no exceptions. There are very good reasons for this and I will not go in to them now. Please realize, if you have missed this cutoff date, you will very likely be able to get copies from one of the many EDAs who will have these tapes when this tree is completed. (Don't worry about a further generation copy being less quality, I've made a 4th generation test tape and it far and away BLOWS AWAY any Jewel concert tape I've heard) - ---------- BLANK TAPES: Due to the _very_ high quality of the master tapes we have of the JewelStock Concerts, we strongly suggest you get Type II blank tapes, and I highly recommend Maxell XLIIS 90 tapes. They DO last longer than Type I and Maxell XLII. You'll be doing yourself a favor by getting better blanks than you usually do. - ---------- MAILING BLANK TAPES TO YOUR BRANCH: When your branch notifies you, you will send him/her your THREE blank NINETY MINUTE tapes in a padded/bubblewrap mailer, and will include in the package enough postage to cover the return mailing. If you enclose a $3 "Space Shuttle Stamp" (United States only), your branch can mail it via US priority mail. Canadian Leaves will have been assigned to the Canadian Branch and you can hammer out the postage details with him, but it's pretty much a similar procedure overall. You can mail your blank tapes in one of two basic ways: 1) A smaller padded UNSEALED envelope (containing your 3 blank tapes) placed inside a larger padded one, which will also contain the return postage & a SELF ADDRESSED RETURN MAILING LABEL. You would seal the larger padded envelope (with the smaller one inside) and mail that to your branch. - or - 2) a padded envelope large (but not too large) enough to hold your 3 blank tapes plus the return postage and a SELF ADDRESSED RETURN MAILING LABEL. The branch would use the SAME padded envelope to return the tapes. Method #1 is the prefered method to assure a smooth procedure. Please consider using it. If you are unsure of how much to put on the RETURN mailer for return postage, or to include in the package for the return postage, just do the following at a post office near you: Get the small padded envelope that your branch will be sending the tapes back to you in and put your tapes in it. Place it on the scale (or ask the clerk to do so) and buy STAMPS (not post office pre-paid/DATED ones) to cover the postage. Put that unsealed padded envelope in a larger envelope. Seal it, pay for the postage on it, and mail it. If you don't use a larger envelope to place the smaller one inside, do the same thing (have it weighed) and buy STAMPS, put them inside, seal it, pay for the postage on it and mail it. - ---------- WHEN TO EMAIL ME: Right now! Sign-ups are still open until midnight Tuesday. At that time this tree will be closed for sign-ups permanently. As I said above, if you miss this window, you will very likely be able to get copies from one of the many EDAs who will have these tapes when this tree is completed. - ---------- HOW TO EMAIL ME: When you EMAIL me, please use the following format in the _SUBJECT_ of the EMAIL, NOT the body, but the SUBJECT!!: all lowercase letters, no capital letters please. examples: leaf - lastname, firstname (country or US territory) leaf - clinton, bill leaf - van dyke, dick (canada) leaf - vega, antonio (puerto rico) You DO NOT have to fill in the country if its the USA (50 states only), US territories please fill in your territory name. All other countries fill in your country name. That's it. No JS, no JewelStock, just --> leaf - lastname, firstname (country) In the body of the EMAIL just tell me you'd like the JewelStock Tapes or whatever. - ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- Everyone involved in this project sincerely hope you enjoy your tapes, Your fellow Everday Angel, Mike ------------------------------ From: "Lara A. I have no reference to know which way to hold the ring.. or place it on my finger for that matter. thanks for the info.. I have been thinking about how much we owe all the people involved in the distribution and creation of the JewelStock tapes. I think about all the branches devoting unpaid hours of copying and preparing and sending all those tapes and all the lucky leaves simply sitting back and waiting to recieve this priceless gift. Are we all just taking for granted the work it is taking all that are involved. I personally feel guilty getting the tapes for the price of 3 blanks and a SASE. But this has become the unwritten rule that has evolved from this great group of strangers. We all have been freely sharing Jewel info, news, reviews of shows, favorite songs, and favorite Jewel moments. We have had discussions about her hair, her teeth, her clothes and even her breasts. Many of you have shared tapes, pictures, guitar tabs, and memorabilia. It is in this spirit of sharing and in believing in fairness that I propose this idea. We have all been reading and submitting our list of favorite music. We have also been admitting to what our first albums were. Two things I have noticed is how diverse our tastes are. We are a well balanced group. Some of us are embarrassed of our first albums and others concider them treasures. Among our collections, we must all have a cassette we hate or just no longer like because our tastes have changed. Why not just stick that tape in with the tapes you send the branches. The branches would have first pick of any tapes they liked from what is submitted. Your junk may be a treasure to someone else. It could serve as a comic relief for the hard working branches. To expand on the idea, the branches could keep this distrution going with any tape they don't happen to like. With your SASE, you could include extra postage if you would like a suprise grab bag. The branch would just stick at random, any tape they didn't want. It wouldn't matter if you already had the title or if you don't like it, because you can use it to continue the trade with someone else. A card could be added with the j-card that would have your name. This way you should never be sent the same tape back. You could still get the same title from someone else. I know this could be fun and successful because I did something like this in my first record store almost 30 years ago. My used record section started with my own unwanted records. At the hight of being a record retailer and wholesaler, I had a warehouse of over 500,000 used and cutout records. It all started from trading with my customers. What do you think? This is of course only a rough idea on how this could be done. If some of the branches think it might make more work for them, maybe we can start branches for trading. This would only be fair if it was on a grab-bag basis. If anyone has any other thoughts on this, please write me. PORTER" said: >> "Pet Sounds"-Beach Boys 1966 > >I find it strangely unnerving that this album has shown up on more than >one five album fave rave list. Anybody with me on this? As one of the people who cited this album, I feel the uncontrollable need to rush to its defense. Assuming that your unnerved state didn't come about because of a general dislike of mid-60s "studio rock" (since you didn't mention all the Beatles stuff people have listed), I'll guess that you are unnerved because when you hear the words "Beach Boys" your mind thinks "Be True to Your School," "Surfin' USA," "Little Honda" and all those other terrible early-60s songs. If this is indeed the case, you should do yourself the favor of listening to a copy of "Pet Sounds" which, except for some of the vocal harmonies, is almost nothing like those songs. The songs are all poems about love, in one form or another (except for "Sloop John B"), and the instrumental texturing and harmonies follow the tradition of Phil Spector's "wall of sound" and were unparalleled in "popular" music at the time (and some would say they still haven't been matched). Paul McCartney freely admits that "Sgt Peppers" was realized as a direct response to the "challenge" laid down in this album (and in an interview called "God Only Knows" the greatest song ever written). For what it's worth, rock critics consistently cite "Pet Sounds" as one of the greatest rock'n'roll albums of all time. So, while it's entirely possible that this style of music (extremely lush, tightly composed, heavily produced) may not suit your personal tastes, don't fall into the trap of automatically dismissing Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys just because of their simplistic early stuff (which was, of course, far more popular than "pet Sounds" in its day). Continuing until somebody stops me, Trent Smith ------------------------------ From: ABershaw@aol.com Date: Mon, 23 Sep 1996 00:34:54 -0400 Subject: Pet Sounds Hi all, Bradley Porter wrote: << "Pet Sounds"-Beach Boys 1966 :I find it strangely unnerving that this album has shown up on more than one five album fave rave list. Anybody with me on this?>> No reason to be unnerved about Pet Sounds. This one particular album is nothing like what most people think of when considering the Beach Boys. This album is essentially a Brian Wilson solo album with the rest of the band used as instruments. Check it out. Lyrically its much deeper than songs about surfing & hot rods! One listen to "Caroline No" & you'll become aquainted with one of the most gut wrenchingly sad & beautiful songs ever written! This album also contains my personal favorite instrumental ever("Let's Go Away For Awhile"). Instrumentals are certainly not what most would think of regarding the Beach Boys, either. This album is also an absolutely brilliant use of 1966 studio technology. Although it was a flop financially at the time, it was an album that inspired countless other musicians including the Beatles. My advice is to dispell all notions of what you ever thought about the Beach Boys & listen to it. It's one of few albums that deserves the term "masterpiece." It's a very emotional album. Those its touched, its touched deeply.--MrBB ------------------------------ From: telliamed@juno.com (Pat Brown) Date: Sun, 22 Sep 1996 23:01:56 EST Subject: Re: [Fwd: Totally NJC - One of the oddest sites on the web??]] On Sun, 22 Sep 1996 17:53:00 -0700 Bruce Ellis writes: > > >I could go on forever, but the easiest way to learn more is to go to >"Llama Web" and some of the other odd following links.
