Mike, I have been watching this chess game carefully. At first it looked like Dennis underestimated you and was just going to end the game with a fools mate. You suprised him and took his kings bishop(Carter). Suddenly I saw Dennis put your queen(Selena) in danger and you were about to loose her. I think he is in a position to take her at any time. You took a gamble and pulled all your pawns(EDA that haven't gotten confirmation) out of position. I have seen games won with pawns. The next thing you should do is open up a rank for your rook(Mr. BB). That reckless move with the knight(crash boy) didn't even confuse Dennis a bit. Watch his queen(Ami). He knows how to use her effectively. Surround him from both sides with your other bishop(Paul Kim). It might be a good time to run and hide. If you castle, your other rook(Tom Proven) can protect that side. I'm not a very good chess player. I really can't identify all the pieces that Dennis has. At times it appears he is playing with another king(Dean) on the board. Maybe we can help make this a more fair fight if some of you better chess players get involved. Mail in your moves to Mike. Tell you the truth, even with our help, you are going to loose. Dennis is just to strong of a player. I was going to say that you should try to cheat, but Dennis already caught you doing that. Resign and challenge him to a different game. I suggest you try Backgammon. Even though it also involves strategy, you may roll some lucky dice. Does Jewel play chess? Which, as a scorpio I can fully agree with, but this whole astrology thing can't help remind me of the episode of "Urusei Yatsura" (animated Japanese sci-fi sitcom from the 80s) wherein all the girls at the school are talking about astrology and comparing their signs and such until someone asks the really rich/attractive new student what his sign is and he "disproves" astrology by saying to one of the girls "if you're an XXXX, then astrologically we would be incompatible, but do you believe it's possible that WE could be incompatible?" (with a charming grin) which causes all the girls to say "No! It can't be! astrology is stupid and meaningless!" (Trust me on this one, it was funny in the show, really!) Anyway, that (obviosuly simplified and exagerrated for comedic effect) anecdote pretty much sums up my views on astrology. Not that I'm trying to disparage anything (I wouldn't dare commit the sin of bringing Flame into this peaceful gathering), I'm just commenting on the way it seems to me. Trent Smith P.S.- with Wholesome JC!: This is probably old news to people who've been on this list for a long time, but I was in my local record store today and happened to notice the "Who Will save Your Soul" single and was struck by the question of why, if Jewel has all these hundreds of songs, does the commercially available single only contain two album tracks. I would've bought the thing in a minute if it'd had even one new song, or even a live version or remix, but what's the point when it's just stuff I've already had for months? P.P.S.: I suppose that last bit actually merited a separate post, but I don't want to seem too uppity, posting twice in a row and all. ------------------------------ From: telliamed@juno.com (Pat Brown) Date: Sat, 21 Sep 1996 02:45:34 EST Subject: [Nope,NJC] Re: New Poll/Favorite Possesion On Fri, 20 Sep 1996 22:16:56 -0500 gregdunn@indy.net (Greg Dunn) writes: > >Or maybe my chunk of Skylab. > Greg... that thing survived travelling through Earth's enormously thick atmosphere at many times the speed of sound... I don't think one measly little house fire will do much to it. There's a lot of truth in the attitude many people here have, that a simple object doesn't and shouldn't have much worth compared to the lives of living things. But I few things I have to say. Not all objects are replacable. Some things are "one of a kind" for whatever reason. For instance, I had recorded a U2 special called "Zoo Radio" once, and a year later lost the tape. I've since not been able to find another copy of this anywhere and am still extremely upset at the loss. I'm sure there's another one somewhere but I've not found it; and until I do, I consider that tape irreplacable. Certainly I value my dog's life greatly. But I wouldn't need to make sure he was safe in a fire. More likely, he'd be the one yelling at us to get our butts out of there. ;-) So how come no one yet has mentioned saving their houseplants? And finally, I don't believe anyone would contest my choice of items to save -- my notebooks and journals. (second would be my computers' HDs, containing other creative works of mine). - ----- telliamed@juno.com ***Send me your age, gender, species, and occupation for the EDA Census. ### All opinions expressed are yours. Pat sent me a letter asking me a very hard question. To answer it properly, I had to do a survey. That's something like a census, so I figured Pat would understand my difficulty. Let me tell you what he asked me, because I need some help from all my Jersey friends. Where's my friend Sean when I really need him? Pat asks: > I have a question and you were instantly the first and only person I > considered asking. Namely, would a native of New Jersey be reffered to as > a "Jerseyan" or "Jersian"? I can see why you ask. Now that I live in the Golden State, I hear people call themselves Californians. But Long Horn Harris calls himself a Texan. No i. Why not Texian? Someone just claimed Maryland and called themselves a Marylander. Are the people in Canada called Kunucks? People from Jersey say they're from Jersey, not New Jersey. Mainly because no one knows where Old Jersey is. New Yorkers never just say York because that's somewhere near Selena. You always have some clown tell you they're from the Sunshine State. Try and find that on your map. Some people that are willing to tell you they are from Jersey will probably not tell you what town they're from. The reason is, some Jersey towns have embarrassing names. Take Freehold as an example. With my accent, it can be misunderstood. How about telling a woman you are from Long Branch and then having to live up to the claim. Or a woman with cramps telling you she's from Red Bank. Then there is Eatontown. Not a good place for a first date. What if you are a native of Little Ferry. You might be called a Little Ferrian. And don't tell Mike about Succasuna . He's still trying to find that llama stud. When I tell my friends from Jersey where I live now, they say, oh yea, Land of the fruit cakes. Maybe native Jersey inhabitants should be called Jerseyites, because it rhymes with meteorites and that's what we are like, out of this world. Now Pat, can you see my problem. Where's Jewel from? Homer? Igor igorwas@smartcitysys.com P.S. I finally give into Pat's census What is your age? - June 16, 1948 - you figure it out What is your gender? - Male (until Kathy read, "Letter From Kathy") What is your species? - Earthling What is your occupation or major? - Computer Consultant/Telecommuting Consultant, previosly the music industry ------------------------------ From: Tom Proven Date: Sat, 21 Sep 1996 05:58:23 -0700 (PDT) Subject: Dennis in the stalls?
