All the albums I listed were from the 60s (including a Beatles album or four), but I was born in 1974. I'm presuming that doesn't make me one of the older members of the list. The reason I listed so much old stuff as being essential is not because I'm a Luddite or a nostalgic old fogey, but because, if you can get past all preconceptions and iconoclasm, a lot of those records from the 60s were really really good. Maybe in twenty years or so I'll look on more contemporary stuff the same way, and be willing to declare more of them as all-time greats, but I know that at the moment I can't think of anything recent that's able to stand up musically to, say, Van Morrison's "Astral Weeks" (which I listened to again last night; absolutely mind-blowing!) Also, compliments to Jesse Richard for mentioning En Act by Shamen. And to ? and Jon for mentions of Meddle by Pink Floyd. =) Slunkers! I once (three years ago?) was driving through (St Loius?) and caught station that played "Louie, Louie" 24/7 with no breaks. I am very sad to say that I listened to that station for almost 2 hours because I simply could not believe that it would play that terible, annoying song over and over and over without commercials or anything. The only break they took was to say that the station indeed played only "Louie, Louie" and would do so around the clock. The funny part of this story is, I got pulled over. When I asked the state trooper if this was for real, he got all pissed off and proceeded to tell me how irrit- ating it was, and let me off w/out a ticket. =) =) You know what? The Times has a section called Tempo that basically shows entertainment stuff and Miss Kilcher graced the front of it with an incredible picture. Though I don't want to start up the whole looks controversy, I must say that this photo of Jewel was amazing. She looked so... beautiful. And anyone who thinks about the whole changing image thing should take a look at this article. The cover has her in the same vein as her Letterman appearance while inside, the picture is the one gracing the beginning of Colin Stuckless's web page. Quite a contrast.
