For you TDK fans, I wanted to point out the equivalent advice is, use SA-X 90s, which are better than regular SA 90s. I switch between Maxell and TDK fairly willingly, myself. Technically, you're better off picking one and fine tuning your tape deck to it, but if you haven't, they're pretty similar. (I give a slight edge to TDK transport/shell, but Maxell has done a lot to improve things) > MAILING BLANK TAPES TO YOUR BRANCH: > You can mail your blank tapes in one of two basic ways: > > 1) A smaller padded UNSEALED envelope (containing your 3 blank tapes) > placed inside a larger padded one, which will also contain the return Just wanted to point out, if you use a self addressed mailer with stamped postage, it fits fine inside the free envelopes from the post office. You don't need the outside mailer to be padded, since the inside one is. I think it was Dennis who pointed that out a while ago. It's how I've been recommending people I copy things for send things, now, and it's how I'm tending to send my blanks out to people. Of course, clear up what to do with your branch, as the final word. Remember that these guys have a lot of copying to do, so being able to be consistent is important for them to do it all quickly. Even if this way is better most of the time, your branch may have special circumstances. (This is true for any branch, not just the JS tree) > the clerk to do so) and buy STAMPS (not post office pre-paid/DATED ones) BIG agreement here. Those printed things from the post office, or from those postage machines at larger businesses, are called "Metered" postage, and are NOT valid outside the issuing post office(large businesses are treated as if they are part of the post office that routes for them) and they're only valid the DATE PRINTED. If you send metered postage to someone, [s]he's pretty much stuck with it. I've been copying tapes for people for a while now, and it still happens that someone ignores this advice, probably because they can get free mail from work this way. How I deal with it depends on mood. Sometimes I'll end up paying postage myself, for which I claim the right to insult the person for a long time. :) :) :) Sometimes I'll just let them know, and ask what they want to do (HINT), to make sure they understand they're making things difficult on people. Nearly always, I let the envelope sit around, lowest on the priority list, until I'm done with the people who got it right. :P Hope that helps, Ray Ray Wong PO BOX 6163 negativl@netcom.com, negativl@best.com Hayward, CA 94540-6163 Member #11537, Debbie Gibson International Fan Club Co-Founder and Charter Member, Sutton Foster International Fan Club ------------------------------ From: Barnabus Heckabus? I personally like the extra protection the case gives the cassette, both in terms of getting crushed, and of dust/dirt getting inside. The best way to RUIN a tape in shipping, I've decided, is to use those mailers that are padded with recylced paper, and not use the case. These mailers are almost guaranteed to shed dust inside, and without a case to keep it out, by the time it gets back to you, the entire mechanism will be nearly unable to allow the now trashed tape to move smoothly. As much as I like to support environmentally concious products, those mailers are evil. You can reuse the bubble or styrofoam mailers many times, which is a far more effective way to recyle than something with only some% post consumer reclaimed fiber. Just keep plenty of packing tape on hand. :) I realize this is something normally carried on the bootleg lists and such, but I've noticed a fair amount of questions from some of the newer members, which suggests to me, this list may be the only place some people are looking to get tapes. As such, it seems appropriate to me to bring it up related issues, at least to some extent. I realize we don't need to repeat the complete debates, but a periodic refresher on the essential points can't hurt. This is an update, reminder, and info post in case you've missed it. The *Everyday Angels List Census* is currently taking place. The Census is a periodic (i.e. "whenever we feel like it") survey that takes place on this list. Why? Because it's just something we like to do, that's all. :-) When the Census is over I will post a summary of the results, including such things as median age, and percentages of the types of people represented on the list that replied. The current Census asks: What is your age? What is your gender? What is your species? What is your occupation or major? To participate in the Census, send an e-mail to me (mailto:telliamed@juno.com). Please include "EDA Census" or "Survey" or something similar in the Subject: line. However it is a human processing these and not some heartless 'bot so your message will be read and possibly replied to. The current cut-off date for the Census is Oct. 1st. The results will be posted soon afterwards, probably the 5th. These dates may change at anytime. Taking part in the Census is not mandatory. The results of the Census won't be posted on a web page, since they're only of interest to members of the list at this time. I'm not "The Official Census Guy." I'm just a guy who's volunteered to do this. I also won't manage the next Census (if/when it occurs). I'll leave that to someone else so others have an opportunity to take an active part in the list. I've noticed many people have not included their species in their submissions. While it's not neccessary, you also won't have to honor of being a representative of your species, and perhaps skew the results against them. And in closing, I'd like to graciously thank all those who have already sent in their submissions -- especially the many lurkers and less-active members. I would also encourage everyone to participate. I don't expect everyone to want to participate, but the more who do, a more accurate example of the list at large will be represented. And I still need many more responses; namely from the females on the list -- I know there are more female Jewel fans than this! And also, some names are conspicuously absent: Crash Boy? Patric O.? Carter? I won't let you leave until you do. Harris Bros? Capello? Igor? I even reserved three digits in the age field just for you! There are others, you know who you are. (And so do I. You may have read about my problem with language in my letter about the word suck. Just as I thought I was getting the most out of the small collection of words I recycle through my letters, you give me a whole new set of words to learn. Let me give you a little background of my problems with language. It was hard learning English or is it American, when I first came here as a five year old. My father was Ukrainian and my mother was Polish/German. I had to tell everyone I was Russian because no one knew what a Ukrainian was. We spoke Russian at home, but my parents whispered in German. My mom spoke 5 languages and sometimes mixed words from each when she spoke. My childhood was spent living in a ghetto with people of different Russian extractions. We had ethnic Russians, Kalmicks(Mongolians), Georgians, each using the language different. In school I once raised my hand and asked "Pu-che-moo"?(Why)and got sent out of the class for talking dirty. Just south of my home was Lakewood, NJ. It was a predominately Jewish community. After listening to many of them talk, I almost became meshugena(crazy in Yiddish). It was later as an adult I became friends with Frank a Berliner(German) and his wife Kathy a Irish/American born in Brooklyn(NY), with a mouth that could embarrass a truck driver. He would ask if "I voud like to hang out mit the guys". Kathy would say, " yous bastuds betta keep yo friggin shit in yo pants and yo mind outta da gutta". Her favorite line was, "What did da friggin blind man say when he walked past da fish store? Hi girls!" I didn't need a translater for that one. They now live in Virginia, near the Blue Ridge Mountains, not far from Piglet. People come from miles around to go to there little store called Dahm's Duck-Inn, just to hear them talk. They all laugh and can't see why anyone would call a place The Damn Duck Inn. I made friends with a Texan from Dallas here in San Diego. I agreed to show him around Jersey during a time both of us were there on business. I took him to Bucky's Italian/Chinese/American Cuisine in Mansville, NJ. Try to imagine the menu in this place. He says to the waitress, "Suga tits, go get me a Jack and put it in a real man's glass. And when you'all is done, how about a lap dance". The waitress's name wasn't Suga, she had no idea who Jack was and didn't know how to do The Lap Dance. He latter told me about trying to rent a car at the Boston airport. After not being able to understand a world she said, he told the women it was alright to speak Engish because he was American. She told him she was. He said to me, "Dey show tawk funny up dere. Dey don't speak American". My son is 22 and my daughter is 25. I remember a troubling conversation I overheard. They were arguing and my daughter accused my son of "Narking" on her. It troubled me because they were using a drug reference as a common phrase. This implies that it is wrong to tell on someone that is using drugs. Although it was not her intention, it had become an often used word by her and her peers. When I first told my daughter about discovering Jewel, she said, "Jewel is the bomb(the best, the greatest)". Well I almost went postal on her, or should I say ballistic. All I can say is sometimes I'm a little wacked.
