No offense, but that unit you've got sounds pretty bad. Your tape deck is supposed to be turned off when you demagnetize it, and I doubt the battery-operated cassette-type demagnetizer you have generates a strong enough magnetic charge to do a good job. The best kind of demagnetizer is a unit that plugs into the wall, and is a handheld thing that looks a bit like a BBQ lighter, wand, or a handle with a little metal rod protruding from it. You open the cassette door, put the tip against the head, push and hold the demagnetizer power button and slowly draw the demagnetizer away from the head. You can get them at Radio Shack, or for about half the price at other electronic supply stores or maybe a stereo shop. Cleaning the heads is way more important than most people realize. It can make a huge difference, especially when recording. I clean the heads on my deck before every recording I make. It's the easiest thing to do. You need a Q-tip, and a bottle of isopropyl alcohol from the drug store, or Methyl Hydrate from the hardware store. Pop open the cassette door, dunk the Q-tip in the alcohol or methyl hydrate, and gently scrub the tape heads, which are the square, silver surfaces that the tapes passes over in your deck. You have two of them...the one in the center is the record/play head, and over to the side is the erase head. Use the dry end of the Q-tip to wipe off the excess alcohol from the heads. While you're at it, it's not a bad idea to clean off the rubber roller that drives the tape. Rotate it by hand so you get it clean all the way around. Let the roller air dry, because if you use the dry end of the Q-tip, the cotton shreds off the tip and sticks to the rubber roller. You can also clean the metal motor shaft (capstan) that the rubber roller piches the tape against. That's it, your tapes will be clearer, and the speed will be steadier when the tape oxide is cleaned off of those parts. You open the cassette door, put the > tip against the head, push and hold the demagnetizer power button and slowly Agreed, except you need to be really careful about the tip of the tool touching the head. If it's bare metal, not coated with something relatively soft (I use heat shrink tube over it), you can scratch the head, ruining it. The demagnetizer is magnetic in nature as well, so contact could actually make it worse if you do it wrong. I've been told you should turn the unit on away from the deck, (DECK OFF, as Dan said) bring it SLOWLY towards the unit, move it slowly around the heads, and bring it SLOWLY away, not turning it off until you're at least 2-3 feet away from the deck. You don't need to actually touch the heads, btw. Close proximity does the trick. The reason for all this is again related to the magnetism of the demagnetizer. If the magnetic field changes too rapidly, you can even magnetize heads that didn't have the problem. At the radio station, I found the turning off was a lot more important than not turning it on too close. YMMV. Either way, I think we can agree you shouldn't rush this. You also don't need to demagnetize nearly as often as you need to clean. I'd do it before any big copying job, or every 100 hours, whichever came first. Someone else will probably tell me I do it too rarely, or too often, depending on whom I asked. When you do it, take the time to do it right. > Cleaning the heads is way more important than most people realize. It can > make a huge difference, especially when recording. You need > a Q-tip, and a bottle of isopropyl alcohol from the drug store, or Methyl > Hydrate from the hardware store. Pop open the cassette door, dunk the Q-tip EEEEEKKK!!!!!!! Careful here!! Lots of warnings: 1) Cheap Q-tips can fray too easily, releasing lots of small fibers that will get themselves nice and static charged, causing you no end of grief! Personally I like to use the ones they actually sell at electronics places, which are at least theoretically sold with the understanding that they're supposed to not do that. (there's also the matter of fibers just plaing getting wrapped up in things, but that was covered already.) 2) Lots of rubbing alcohols are way too impure, and can also damage heads. (Most rubbing alcohol has a lot of particulate stuff that isn't filtered out) Try to at least find 99% Isopropyl, which most druge stores carry, even if it costs 50+ cents more, if you don't use regular head cleaner. I've been told Everclear is great, but I think that if I were going to go to the effort of finding Everclear, it'd be for other purposes, of which I haven't really partaken in a while. > excess alcohol from the heads. While you're at it, it's not a bad idea to > clean off the rubber roller that drives the tape. Rotate it by hand so you Umm, careful about this, too. Too much cleaning with alcohol will dry out the rubber, causing you other problems. As long as the roller exhibits friction (and doesn't feel slick or gummy), it's probably okay. If you find the surface has hardened, try to replace the roller if possible. It's possible to use various things to rub the surface enough to roughen it back up, but be caeful about getting too much dirt inside the deck if you're using emery paper, or pencil erasers, etc. Usually the alcohol is okay, though. Just be careful. Also, if you're thinking about using a blower can (compressed air, etc), remember that it's possible to blow dirt INTO cracks as well as out of, and you can't always control that. Use a vacuum first, remembering that air moving past a plastic hose end will cause a static buildup if it goes for more than a minute or so. (Unless, of course, you have a special electronics vacuum, with a static ground at the tip, in which case you'd have skipped past all this babble since you know what I'm talking about already. Come to think of it, you probably skipped past it anyway by now, so why am I still writing?) Just a few words and yet so filled with images and reflections on our society. We just had a crazed graduate student, at San Diego State, kill 3 of his professors. I hope this doesn't start a trend like the postal workers. This is my second post in a row about guns. Some of you may say they would rather not hear it. If you close your eyes and ears to it, the problem will never go away. Every day I start my day with reading the local paper and watching the news unfold on TV. And each day I am pained by the endless stories of murder, crime, violence and war. This list helps me believe that the whole world is not like that. It also gives me a place to feel good by being able to share with all of you EDA's. Slunker went on to say: > Oh well, I forget which one of y'all is the manager of a music store...but, > if you see some crazy fool come in and listen to your CD's and start signing > with the music (real badly): that's me, and if you wanna get on my good > side...start signing along. Every day some music lover would walk into my record store wearing headphones and singing along with the music on their walk-man. You all must have heard someone try to do this. Since they can't hear themselves, even a great singer will sound terrible. My solution was to call them over to me and hand them a mike attached to my tape player. I would then play it back for them and for all the store customers to hear. It was a very good lesson. Most people would beg me to turn it off as the singer insisted that they don't sound like that. This way Jewel can join an elite group of Wal-Mart banned and censored singers. For those of you that haven't heard, Wal-Mart announced that they were refusing to sell Sharon Crow's new CD because of a reference to Wal-Mart selling guns to children in Sharon's new CD. Wal- Mart did stop selling guns in there stores a short while ago. The announcement got a lot of press. I applauded their decision to do so. But this announcement came a little to late for one individual. He was a Wal-Mart manager in my neighboring town of Poway, CA. He followed a crystal- head out the store after he was refused service at the gun department. The guy got in his car and pulled up to the manager and with one fatal bullet, killed him. I like buying my records from real record stores, like Lou's Records, in my area. Or if its going to be a major chain, I like Borders. My favorite stores were Igor Records, but since they are all closed, I have to settle for the next best thing.
