I've been off the mailing list for about five months, but now that I have my own computer, I'm back on. If anyone could let me know about any new tape trees since mid-May, I'd be forever in your debt. Anyway, I saw Jewel play a club in Pittsburgh on May 22nd and taped the show. When she came out for the encore, her band started to play the Beatles' "Birthday." Then someone brought out a cake and the crowd sang Happy Birthday to her. Very cool. Here's the set list: Behind The Wall Little Sister Deep Water Sometimes It Be That Way Near You Always Daddy All The Animals Morning Song I'm Sensitive Pink Fleshy Heart Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone (is this the right title?) Race Car Driver (Jewel plays electic guitar on this song and the next) Rocker Girl Foolish Games Amen Encore: Birthday (Beatles cover) Happy Birthday to You Who Will Save Your Soul Chime Bells (w/ Duncan Sheik) The sound quality is good, but I plan on making it even better. A friend of mine has a CD-R, so I'm going to remaster it and put it on CD (sorry, but I can only trade tape copies of it). It will be at least a week until I can do this, though. If anyone has Jewel concerts of good sound quality to trade, let me know. ------------------------------ From: ScottSPM@aol.com Date: Sat, 14 Sep 1996 14:47:07 -0400 Subject: remove scottspm@aol.com remove scottspm@aol.com ------------------------------ From: Larry G Date: Sat, 14 Sep 1996 12:16:58 -0700 (PDT) Subject: album title? Jewel - Pieces of You Though it is not a new release, Jewel Kilcher's debut album, Pieces of You, is starting to receive a good amount of well-deserved attention. This may be due to several things, including nomination for Best New Female Artitst at the MTV Video Music Awards, an appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman, and the recently achieved platinum status of POY. The first single, "Who Will Save Your Soul," an attack on religion for popularity, was popular for quite a while in early 1995, but faded from airplay until recently. It was followed by a non-album version of "You Were Meant for Me," a great song consisting of the two mainstays of music, love and loss. Jewel was born on an 800-acre homestead in Homer, Alaska on May 23, 1974. She started performing with her parents when she was five years old, playing for tourists. Miss Kilcher spent her last two years of high school at the Interlochen Fine Arts Academy in Michigan, an expensive private school. The majority of her tuition was covered for by a vocal scholarship, and the rest came from money raised at her first solo concert, and from donations by the citizens of Homer. She moved in with her mother in San Jose, California, where she worked various dead end jobs. She decided that if she was going to be successful, she would have to force herself into it. Jewel moved into her van, where she lived off of peanut butter and carrot sticks, and began to write songs. Things really began to take off after she started performing at the Inner Change, a coffeehouse in Pacific Beach. She would play three or four hour sets every Thursday night, debuting several new songs each night, and sometimes making them up on the spot. Eventually, word of this new, young singer got to the Los Angeles record industry. She was signed to Atlantic records, and used the advance to buy a new guitar, a used Volvo, and to actually move into a house. The album consists of 14 song, recorded on July 28th and 29th, 1994 at the Inner Change and released on February 28, 1995. Most of them featuring only Miss Kilcher and her guitar, but some, however, have violin, drums, and backup vocals. Since Miss Kilcher started out by herself, she usually plays that way in concert. Recently, however, she has started playing and recording for her follow-up album with a band. Some of the best songs on the album are "Pieces of You," a thoughtful attack on homophobes, anti-Sematics, and other hateful people; "Angel Standing By," a beautiful song written for one of her friends after her father died; and "I'm Sensative," a song consisting mainly of Miss Kilcher's views on life. "Adrian," another album track, is probably the most emotional song on the album, but it sounds more like a seven year old than an adult woman. There are also about 150 other songs available on bootlegs, compilations and soundtracks. Jewel has played in Springfield twice, once at the Earth Day Festival and again at the Juke Joint last year. She is currently recording a new album, which will be released next year. -- Sean Rader peace, Sean ------------------------------ From: PAUL KYUSAM KIM Date: Sat, 14 Sep 1996 15:34:02 -0400 (EDT) Subject: some JC some NJC, mostly responses to posts so you people could , find , a response to YOUR message in here. Read it Damn you! _christmas album? I still like my idea of her singing kids songs. Can't you just imagine her sticking that wry-humor tone into a fun song like Rubber Ducky? For the suggestion about a Nightmare Before Christmas song made by Jeff genghis kahn, the song that goes, "I sense there's something in the wind, that smells like tragedy's at hand" or something like that that Jack's girlfriend sings would be lovely for Jewel to sing. Catherine O'Hara sang it wonderfully, and I think Jewel could do it justice in an angelic voice. - -Carter, gone for good after the 21st? There are few people who I love to save posts from (bad english paul. And Crunch, I sympathize with your purging sadness), and you are one of them. So wonderfully skewed and movie literate, psychotic in a comfortable way, just darn good wholesome fun. - -Tom O's idea of a survey beyond just music. I tried this once (way back in January) and got 6 replies. I'd be surprised as hell if someone could actually get a sizable amount of replies for a survey. PErsonally, I'd like to see another survey of age and sex of the list and see how much the demographics have changed since last this was done. - -The Wizard of Oz in Concert cd is available commercially in record stores across the land. it has 37 tracks! Please buy it don't copy it because all proceeds go to the Children's Defense Fund. - -for any of you interested in the Lilith's Fair thing that Sarah McLachlan is organizing for next summer here is what she had to say in a recent interview on some Canadian radio program as transcribed by a Fumbler: so who's coming? SM: paula cole, um, emmylou harris, lisa loeb, michelle macadory (?) who used to be in crash vegas. and there's also going to be a B stage, where i have actually my backup singer, camille henderson, and her sister, saffron henderson, and holly mcnarland (?) is going to be playing as well. it's pretty much -- this summer, these shows are sort of acoustic-based. there's not going to be too much full band kind of thing happening. um, when we put together the whole tour next summer, it's probably gonna be -- we're gonna give people the option of whether they want to be acoustic or full band. well, you've explained why you want to do this. what were you hearing from the female performers that you approached? how did they react to the idea? SM: oh, they're all thrilled by it. they think it's a great idea -- a long time coming, so...i've had really good response. we've got some sort of confirmation already from m'chell ndege ocello (?) and nena cherry... - -For those who don't know, Jewel recorded her new album in Woodstock, New York during the summer and did some finishing touches in Nashville. According to Hiranya, there will be a mix of solo acoustic and band songs on the album. - -Jessica was written first. Emily was written for the Crossing Guard and Jewel did take Jessica as the groundwork for Emily. Jewel has recorded both solo and band versions of Jessica (and we heard a sample of Jessica the band version while waiting outside at Jewelstock, although the organizers inside got to see her rehearsing it fully, lucky dinks). It sounded great! - -Rachel, sorry about talking so little to you at S&S Thursday. Wait, did I even say anything? My brain couldn't function at the precise moment that I walked into your aisle, so no words came out of my mouth. I was going to be in town anyway for a Space Development conference, and it was announced on the Milla list Thursday night that she would perform at BuzzardFest on Sunday. I managed to find lawn tickets Saturday and went over to Blossom Music Center hearly to await her performance. Not much of a story, except to note that I have never met so many kind, friendly people at a concert venue as the employees and security at Blossom. Acoustically, I enjoyed the lawn location though I could hardly see miss Milla from the railing at the back of the pavilion. She was in a good mood, dancing, playing guitar, and cavorting all over the stage, She was wearing a nice skirt, a midriff top and long stockings, and was absolutely delectable in sound and appearance. I hung around in hopes that she would show up by the rear stage entrance after her performance, but no luck. Milla is a much underrated artist -- many people seem to fixate on her appearance to the neglect of her obvious musical talent. I can only hope that the release of her second album will wake the masses to her quality musicianship. - -- | Greg Dunn | "Information is not knowledge; | | gregdunn@indy.net | knowledge is not wisdom; | | GregDunn@aol.com | wisdom is not truth." | | http://members.aol.com/gregdunn/ | -- Frank Zappa | ------------------------------ From: SDFAngel@aol.com Date: Sat, 14 Sep 1996 20:15:28 -0400 Subject: Re: NJC: spew+/IRC What's the name of the chat room? ------------------------------ From: XBELLYx@aol.com Date: Sat, 14 Sep 1996 20:35:32 -0400 Subject: Goldfish I decided to test a theory of jewels when i was drunk last night, and i took my Goldfish out of it's bowl, y'know what?
