He always seems to steal all the magazines I get whenever Susan Sarandon is on the cover; I'm afraid I'll have to sic my dog on him if he takes a fancy to Jewel. I just hope Details doesn't demolish her looks like that mag seem to enjoy doing to other cover subjects; I can just see the photographer draping her in nightmarish psycho-70's duds, dousing her with oil and mascara, and placing her in the midst of a homoerotic Diesel advertisement. In an effort to placate my distress over missing out on "Save the Linoleum" I went out and bought the "Oz" concert CD. I'm afraid it suffers in comparison to Tori Amos's "Hey Jupiter" single, which carries her astonishing cover of "Over the Rainbow". Still, 'twas nice to hear her Ella Fitzgerald side surface again on "Jitterbug". Wouldn't it be classy of Jewel to do a cover of a Fitzgerald song during her shows and to preface it with a "this is dedicated to ..." remark? Too often with the popular format of "push the product" and "sound bites-R-us" no one takes the time to really interview the person. Instead it's "Hi, what's your name? What do you have to sell? And what's so unique about you that people should buy it" ("Hello, it's nice to b... My new album is called 'Pieces of You.' It was re... Well, my father taught me to yodel and...") And, of course, art isn't really considered "real" merchandise so musicians are shoved in as an afterthought with little or no time to do anything just as a cheap ploy to advertise the show and get people to watch or normally wouldn't. ....
