I hadn't heard about it before I went to her concert last April, and I was completly shocked. The "soul" in WWSYS is also an amazing thing to be able to pull off. I always find myself trying whenever I listen to that song, and I usually make it, barely. The second one is a lost cause though. Nope, just can't do it. I think that if we got Jewel and Tori singing a duet it would be the most long-winded tune in the history of mankind. . . Oooh, neat thought. The Other Rachel (Rogers) ------------------------------ From: NeOblCar@aol.com Date: Tue, 10 Sep 1996 20:42:27 -0400 Subject: just my thoughts, you don't have to read them After reading thousands of posts it must be a forgone conclusion that "1000 Miles Away" is one of Jewel's most touching, inspirational songs. I can recall at least half dozen EDA's, moved by the song, writing poems or other prose. It is forcefully one of the most beautifully sad songs written. It is a classic illustration of Jewel's vocal command. Imagine the ability to drive a stranger to tears. Don't fight the instinct to cry. Those who resist during the wailing of torment of her voice are typically crushed as she drops down to a breathy whispering sob. On to my point. ~~~~~Oh, God what do I do. I am a 1000 miles away, I'm lying next to you.~~~~ Recently, I was considering those lyrics and realized they could be taken two ways. The meaning opposing the rest of the song is that even though you are lying next to someone they might as well be a 1000 miles away. On this level the song is cruelly sad. A relationship of commitment or responsibility is as "hollow as the 6 o'clock news". Thankfully that's not the what real love or this song means. I much perfer the intended message that even when a 1000 miles away, you still feel as though the person is next to you. This speaks of a love that transcends the everyday manifestation. A love built on the concept that you are a better person when you are connected to your other half. Those who know or who have met me -- know that is what I feel for Tammy. I just wanted her to know that, and know that I know the difference between these two types of love. Thanks for that indelgence of my own expression, what do you all think of the song??? First of all, let me explain my subject heading. I added the NAC as No Alanis Content, I'm happy to say that this post will have absolutely NO bearing on the Jewel vs. Alanis discussion. However I would like to say that I'm glad that the only posts that do have relevance to that discussion now are the posts saying things like: " I say we can't compare the two. And shouldn't. " or " I say that I like Jewel better, but I've got an open mind to other bands too. " Anyway, all I'm saying about that is that I'm happy it's over. Now, let me explain the _real_ reason I've made this post. As you've probably noticed, I'm a semi-newbie...not completely tho...cuz even though I've been on this list for only a week or two, I'VE READ EVERY POST! You heard me. ( read me, whatever )...well, all I can say about that is that I don't know any better. But their is one thing I've learned by reading all that, and that this group is changing more rapidly and with a much greater degree than Jewel is. What I'm trying to say is, I can see how the long-time faithful members are losing touch with the group because of its growing size. Now, I'm gonna try and take a stab at how this group has changed and what all the senior EDA's remember from earlier times. I imagine that all EDA's knew just about every other one's name or nickname, and liked to communicate through the list, while keeping large conversations going between themselves. But their conversations ( I assume ) were much less sarcastic, low, snide, and involved fewer rude cut-downs, instead, they were more like a friendly chat that one might have with a long, lost friend or college roommate from years ago, trying to catch up on what's been going on in each other's lives. Finally, I suspect, that threads could be altered/created/destroyed far more easily than the current ones'. I can assume this with some amount of certainty by the way that all the true-blue long-time EDA's have tried ( with little success ) to stop the mean/rude threads ( that appear all to often ) before they start... Well that's what I think all the old, and hopefully all the new, EDA's wish to return to. I invite comments and criticism of what people think I'm saying here. ( Especially from the ones who can tell me if I have even a speck of truth to my post ). Now, not to be a hypocrite, I'm going to practice what I preach: Hi, My name is Mac Rogers, I'm from Florida, and I like Jewel, but that's not to say I don't like other bands, to be honest I can't _truly_ say that she's my favorite, but she's up there, and I _can_ see why she would be a favorite to many. I _really_ like Anime ( Japanimation ), but I don't know if any of you do too, seeing as how Jewel and Anime would be a VERY bad mix. I'm sorry to disappoint y'all, but I'm only in high school, another young whipper-snapper in the group...I am _terribly_ frightened of only two things: bees and this new "Jewel-News Only" Group. Even though the very first post I read was the one that started the NJC vs. JC debate, I could tell that this group was good at heart and just needed a little encouragement and it could be just as good as what the old-EDA's remember. ( pardon my use of the word: old ). I hope that we can be happy again before everyone leaves for the JC Only Mailing List...It'll be better, I promise! One of the things I think will really draw us closer together is the JS Tape Tree...once those start rolling out...I think we'll be nice for the rest of the year. Well, let the Flamin...er...Responses begin! =) Thanks for hearing me out there... \\\|/// º¿º V Mac And remember, you can call me "Slunkers" -" Where are you now, when your broken eyes are closed, head in a cloudy dream, green with sailboats.
