Its personal preference thats all that needs to be said. Anyway - all you EDA's should be pleased to know that here in Australia people are starting to finally get the idea. Jewel debuted this week in the top 50 at no 46. It took a while as i bought the single in mid june about 2-3 weeks after it was released but better late then never. Also i have seen the film clip on our only 2hr video program 2 times in the last three weeks which isnt half bad either. Considering shes doing a promo visit this week it cant hurt her! Yay! I just wished i lived on the east coast as i doubt she'll be coming over here. I am personally not an alanis fan but they both have done a lot to open peoples eyes to women musicians. I have to admire alanis for her gracious, unselfish, acceptance speech in which she accepted it on behalf of all the other women musicians. Just my 2 and 1/2 cents! ------------------------------ From: SDFAngel@aol.com Date: Sat, 7 Sep 1996 23:43:29 -0400 Subject: Fwd: My valid point, that's out of bounds Before I go apeshit that you only admire Jewel for her looks I'd like to be objective. True Alanis is more popular. We never desputed that. But do you really believe that she can do the vocal gymnastics that Jewel can? I won't go to instrumentals or lyrics even though I believe Jewel is better in both catagories. The reason I won't push the lyrics is because Alanis is known for her lyrics and still she's enjoyed more success then Jewel. I don't withdraw my opinion of her but her popularity speaks for itself. It also says something very cynical about the citzens of the world. Do you really only appreciate Jewel over Alanis for her looks? That hurts me. Jewel taught me that for darkness to be real, light has to exist somewhere. If I can believe that happiness is real and it's only a matter of finding it then I don't need to hate being alive anymore. Jewel is an icon representing peace and hope and that is why we affectionately refer to her as an angel. I don't dislike Alanis, I don't even know her I've just heard her album but I don't respect her work, I think it's geared for... If you don't believe me, check out the back charts of every Rolling Stone Magazine. First of all, Alanis I'm pretty sure can play piano. She chooses not to, but would that fit it with her routine? NO! Also, who has a following on a continent besides N.America. Who has more popularity in much less time? Who won a music award? MTV might be lame, but at least she is considered great by the lamers out there. (Jewel's album is older, and who's had more hits?) The only plus on Jewel in my opinion is that she's got the body of a goddess, above average vocals, and is nice looking as well. Alanis is attractive in my opinion so that doesn't really put Jewel ahead by far. Alanis' songs do have meaning. She also sounds exactly the same when she plays live. Also, who seems to be selling out shows? Who is headlining shows? Who was chosen to be a performer? Who has video concepts that make SENSE? Who is getting more airplay? (Don't give me the crap, "Oh she doesn't want to be famous." Tori Amos even is much better than Jewel and Tori didn't even plan on being famous) Also, why the hell does Jewel use an acoustic guitar? It's the 90s, an age of technology... My point has been expressed in many ways. If any of you want to send feedback. That is, MTV is a video station, and while the success of the artist and song play a role, the quality of the video production is a big factor ("Best Female _Video_"). Jewel always maintained that the video for Who Will Save Your Soul was low-budget, and has even made fun of it during her shows. So it wasn't surprising to see it get beat out by Alanis's high-budget special-effects work. As good as MTV's video awards are, they're still a big self-promotion for the station, so they're all about rewarding the artists who attract the most viewers to MTV. And there's no doubt Alanis has been a star attraction for MTV this year. And while Alanis's success has been largely due to being surrounded with top-notch writers, players and promotion, you can't deny that she has enough substance to pull it off. Like it or not, her success this year was a big factor in the trend towards mainstream acceptance of other female artists, like Jewel. I think most people (especially here) recognize that Jewel is in another league artistically, but that doesn't mean Alanis has no talent. Just think of Jewel as a Pentium, while Alanis is a Mac... I think I'd better go now. At Jewel's Opera House show in Toronto a few months ago, she stopped at one point to ask "Is Alex here, the one who wrote the book that I was in?" He apparently wasn't, or didn't respond anyway.
