He is back but hiding out for a while. I want everyone to know that I'm glad he is back. I also knew that if I gave him just a little spanking, he would be back. Most of you that read Sean's letter calling us all "assholes" probably don't feel as I do. He tried to make you all believe he wasn't worthy of being one of us. He was looking for an easy out. He didn't fool me. His thought provoking and well written letters were a welcome sight when ever they appeared. You ask, how do I know he is back. I know because he wrote me a brilliant response to what many of you took as a flame from me. That's just how we talk in Jersey. People from other places think we're fighting but we're just talking loadly. He gave me permission to forward his reply to the list, but I won't do that. It's up to him. I will answer one of his questions publicly. He asked me what in his letter made me so mad. Three things. First reason. His language. Not just the words he used. We have all heard the same words used by less skilled writers. But he is a very skilled writer and I expected better from him. Second reason. He called all my friends assholes. If he just called me one, I would have been invigorated and felt challenged. Or if it was directed at one person so they could have a chance to respond, that would have been OK. But he left us all unable to give a fair response. Third reason. The letter was written as if it were a farewell or goodbye letter. Sean, if you leave, don't do so without putting up a good fight for what you believe. When you do come back, try to offer some flexibility for others. Look at me. I just changed my mind about the news-list. When I wrote my reply, I took a cheap shot at one of Sean's favorite groups, Pearl Jam. I apologize for that. Last thing. Sean once asked me who my favorte guitar player is. It is David Darling. I know, he doesn't play guitar, he plays cello. But he plays the cello like a guitar. I mean its the only time (besides thw wwsys video) that i could see her, besides pictures. But no, whats this NFL game of the week is on. Took a guess and expected it to come on after that finished and before the US open started so i set the video for 2:40 which was the time the football was sposed to finish. It must have been ingrained in my mind because i woke up in the middle of the night at exactly 2:40 so i rushed out to the living room all excited but no..the tennis was on. I put in another video and left that recording in case it came on after that but to no avail. Channel 9 must have just decided not to show Letterman that night! ARRRRGGHHH!! Last night (wednesday) i stayed up for letterman (came on at a reasonably decent hour midnight) to check if they were going to show it then, but noooooo...it was tuesdays instead with beck...sigh.. First of all I'd like to say that the world doesn't give out consolation prizes for anything. Nor does MTV (especially for heroin addicts); and I'm not just saying that because I'm an MTV junkie or a major Pumkins fan. Think about it; did Blind Melon get an award for losing Shannon Hoon!? Did Nirvana get an award for losing Kurdt Cobain!? The answer to both of those questions is *NO*. Anyway, think about the competition that the Pumpkins had..........................the only good competition I can think of would be the Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, and Beck. Sure those are all great bands, but they were up against 2 songs/videos that are peerless. On top of that, "Tonight, Tonight" is one the best videos I've ever seen as far as capturing the mood of the song goes! Same w/ "1979"! Just to clear my sister's name this is her brother writing. I'm sorry if you feel that I've grilled you, but I strongly feel that every award that the Smashing Pumpkins won last night was very, very well deserved. I also feel that Jonathon Dayton and Valerie Faris' (directors of "Tonight, Tonight") award was well deserved, and very properly handed out.
