But oh well. You never get what you want... Don't be too hard on them angels, I think everyone picks a topic or item about Jewel that might be of interest to them. It brings the artists closer and makes her feel more personal to you. Forgive me if I suddenly become "uncool" by defending these conversations, but I love to hear what she ate. Why? Because it carries a quality of intimacy that as a "fan" I want to feel. Conversely, I don't care about a lot of things (like what she wears, etc.). For the record though, if your best friend was a "natural" no make-up type of girl, and suddenly came to work or school all dolled up, you'd wonder why. Anyone would. Hiranya explained why quite capably. The difference being in real life (opposed to cyber-life) we would ask her personally and in a friendly tone, "why the hell are you made up like that?" or "god, girl you look good." The worst thing would think it in our mind and come up with our own reasoning. See how much better it is just to say something is bothing you, get the real answer and move on. To me how she looked simply didn't matter, but to some it did -- and because of that I respect the right for them to discuss. Really, though I think it was more of an inquisitive "why?" then anything else. Now if she changed her hair like Toni Dunn or something really wacky, then I'll be posting. What I wanted to know (and this is always true) is her personal emotions during the show. Was she happy, sad, indifferent? She has mentioned before her first appearance that Letterman is something she really wanted to do, did she feel the same way doing the show for a second time? What was it like for her to FINALLY play YWMFM or anything other than WWSYS on a national show? Did she feel relieved, nervous, etc? These are what I personally would love to discuss. Anyway, my point being (which somehow I have now totally lost) is that all of us as "fans" search for that connection beyond her music. If we didn't, we'd be listening to boots instead of typing here. Connections like her stories, her personality, and yes, even parts of her personal life. Unfortunately, even though I only like insights on a small pieces of her life, collectively we are demanding it all. Part of Jewel's and our growth during this time of fame will be, we can't demand it all anymore -- and she can't offer it all anymore. But it won't stop us wondering : ) Just another mindless ramblings of my .02, Rob ------------------------------ From: Dean Date: Thu, 05 Sep 96 09:27:51 EST Subject: Re: New Jewel Thread Rising... If people want to talk about an artist changing their looks/personality Dolores would be a much better candidate. When I saw the cranberries (over three years ago now) she was very plain looking, dressed in all black, and didn't even look at the crowd during the show (she just sort of sung standing sideways with her head down). Now she is very flamboyant, changes her hair as much as Dennis Rodman, and can't stand still on stage. She has change 100% in her "stage" personality, and I still like them they are just different. What occurred to me is that Jewel was in the same building as Dolores. Does anyone think that Jewel had the courage to go up to Dolores and apologize in person (and maybe do a impersonation for her). I liked it better with the keyboards, and the bridge (which was just cut out recently). It also seems to have been slowed down. If "Carnivore" sounds like it did in May, I think it'll be huge. Otherwise, "Love Me Just Leave Me Alone" could be the big song of the next album. That's highway robbery; can you be suprised if you feel a little ripped off?? Try instead to feel a warm happi- ness that you were able to contribute to an outstanding show. Period. =) I think that this applies to many on the list. We must all be careful not to expect too much from Jewel. Some of us are being caught in a very sticky web. We are expecting return for our investment in Jewel.
