Todays topic is popularity. Especially the popularity of someone that you once thought was yours. Say you really liked a young musician that would regularily perform at your local coffee house or bar. The musician is obviously doing this for fun. For awhile it is just you and the musician. You meet the musician a couple of times after sets. Then out of the blue a record company scout discovers your musician. At first you are happy for them. The CD comes out and there is a big party at the coffee house/bar where the musician played many of the songs on it. Then the musician goes on tour. You go to the final show, and now there are three times as many people there. This makes you happy, untill the first drunk says something rude, and you notice that people aren't really listening to the musicians songs, some are talking, and a few are just there to say that they went. But they are not fans, in your mind that is, unlike like yourself who you consider one of the best fans in the world. You sit there quietly, listening to ever word, never thinking about anything other than what a great singer the musician is. You get angry at the other patrons for not coming up to your ideals. Then your musician is gone, won't play at the old place for a year, won't even be back in that state for ten months. The musician is not yours anymore, they won't be there for you on open mike night like usual. This doesn't bother you at first because you want all the best for your musician. Interviews on tv and radio spread the word. Untill that is the interviewers all seem to be asking the same questions and not delving into the mind of the artist, like you would. Then you start seeing articles in papers and magazines that talk about something trivial, where the videos were shot, what they wore in concert the other night, mis-interpretations of lyrics. This angers you, how could someone think of your musician like this. It all crashes down when you see your musician, the one you followed and loved since the begining, become just like any other pop star. The musician may wear make up or sexy clothes, may get a handsome lover, or some other hollywood-esque thing. This drives you nuts, how could they, they've been corrupted, its an outrage. You cry out was the musician ever sincer and truethful. Think about it from the musician aspect. Performing started out as something fun, something that made them happy. Then a record company courts you to make a cd and after awhile publicity hits hard. Your song is playing across the nation, there are over a million of your cds in people's players. You've performed on prime time and late night shows, and one of your songs is up for a music award. Maybe you have a nice body but never knew how to show it off before and now designers what you to wear their clothes and make-up artists call you to ask if they can do you up for a television appearence. You cn't believe all this fuss over you a simple musician from some corner of the country. Never having been in the hollywood world before but it is tempting to just once be pampered and dress up. On top of all of that is the fact that everyone is watching your every move. Lord forbid you should get a traffic ticket, have a bad day and yell at someone, not look your best at a show. Or if you decide to change a song that was really personal into something that you feel more comfortable performing in front of hundreds of strangers. Then there are the fans, that despite their best intentions, are human and the root of fan is fanatic. Do you really want this, a few years a go the only people who knew you could sing were your friends and now there is this group of several hundred who want to know everything about you. What would happen if you should ever change your style, your look, your hair, the city you live in or date someone that they wouldn't approve of. What I'm trying to say is that before you say something mean about someone, famous or not, think about their situation. Don't talk bad about someone for something they did if you did it yourself. Though I don't agree with alot of the bible, the line "Let the one with out sin cast the first stone" is a line to live by. Wow. I haven't been keeping up with the list due to some stuff these past couple of months, but finally last night I sat down and read the posts, and I am not sure if I am just hearing the tail end of what you guys are talking about, but what is all this doubting of Jewel's sincerity all of a sudden??? Maybe I just haven't read enough lately and I could be misinterpreting what people are saying, but we all have to realize that Jewel is going to grow and mature and *change* -- just like we all mature, grow and change. This is such an exciting time for her...she's living her dream. I feel the same way about her as I did when she totally inspired me when I first saw her saying that she's going to "Sing or die" She's getting a lot of attention, she's in the spotlight, but if everyone has REAL faith in her like everyone DID have when Jewel put on JewelStock, then you just have to trust her to remain true to herself. That is really all she has to prove, not to anyone else but just to herself -- we are all on that same quest. Anyways, I really love Jewel's mom -- she has good people around her. :) And like a lot of nights, I will end this just by saying a little ditty that hopefully wherever Jewel is she's alright and she's happy. :) Don't kill the god of sadness Just don't let her get you down - -Kristen Hersh And when I say you sucked my brains out The English translation is I am in love with you And it is no fun - -Ani Difranco- ------------------------------ From: "Lara A. The Innerchange is where she was discovered and would likely be a fitting tribute. I have a couple photos of her playing at the Innerchange in Pacific Beach and at the Wikiup in San Diego. Who would I send these to? Sure we get the feeling that somehow she's not just singing for us anymore. But we should trust her to always remember who her real, most loyal fans are. I think all great musicians pay their dues and when success comes they want to enjoy it. Jewel has more than payed her dues and now it's her turn to shine in the spotlight. Overall, though, I'm not that upset she didn't win. I think the person that REALLY got screwed was Bjork. Her video was the most innovative and interesting by far. I mean, let's face it, as much as I adore Jewel, the video for WWSYS is pretty bad. All that esoteric, black-and-white, creepy looking people in the bathroom BS is fairly hackneyed and boring at this point. You can almost hear the director saying, "Let's do something really DEEP here. How about we put an old man sitting on a toilet holding a fish bowl? Huh? That'll get 'em thinking!!!!" I'd like to see a Jewel video that has something to do WITH THE MUSIC. There's a novel thought. Okay, I'm done. Yeah she did get best choreography, but who does dance videos anymore, but she desirves so much more. She back with the sugarcubes were alternative and she still is. There is no label for her style, its that the definition for alternative, not another word for rock bands who make weird videos. The awards are for videos not the songs, gotta wait for the grammy's for that one. WWSYS video did have something to do with the song but I think not really, the song is about being a foney person because society tells you to, didn't see too much of that in the video. anyways this might lead to another messed up thread so time to go back to reading the Tragedy of Richard the second act 2 in my cave, Robb ps Hi Rachel, sorry I've been bad lately about writing, yo can spank me if you can get down here, ;) "I'm gonna take you on" -- Republica Rant 'n Rage (9/4/96): http://www.vt.edu:10021/R/rleigh/robb.html rleigh@vt.edu ------------------------------ From: plus@seark.net (plus) Date: Wed, 4 Sep 1996 23:35:23 -0500 Subject: get off it what's this about everyone saying, "oh no, jewel looks sexy! it's the end of her music career as we know it. we can't listen to her music cause she looks like that, now." get real people. what's wrong with looking good. it's like everyone wants her to become a hermmit or a nun, and everyone's surprised cause she dressed up really sexy like just for one appearance. give her a break, man. just because she looks different for one show all of the sudden doesn't mean she "changed" or anything. she's still the same person. anybody would like to look great like that so why can't jewel? i bet she's feeling sad that her special list doesn't approve of her nice appearance. :( plus ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V1 #541 ***************************
