Everything that could fit in my car and more is upstairs strewn about my room. Still gotta find the stuff to put my waterbed together tho (Queen size! left it here). In any case.. we took our time (comparatively to the drive Tom and I took for JewelStock anyhow) and made it here in 4 days. We left Wednesday night at 11:30pm PST and made it here on Sunday at 9pm EST. Stopped to camp in Zion National Park (beautiful I might add). The drive was absolutely beautiful until we got over the Rockies. Then it was just boring .. trees .. fields .. hills .. joy. We stopped at two motels on the way over.. ..until we got to Toledo! =) We got to see Liz and had a lot of fun bowling (Hey! She even got a 134 (??) and won the first game!) after having dinner at a local brewery (they had beer in EVERYTHING!). Thanks Liz for having us over.. we both love you! :) I haven't had the chance to see Jewel since JewelStock, but after the six (??) times I've seen her, I've become picky. I don't particularly feel like paying $25+ (however much it is) to see her in a huge venue with some artist that I wouldn't pay half that to see anyway. :P (Hey hey, don't bash me.. I just don't like Neil Young enuf.. not that you shouldn't or something) Will she be playing any non-Neil Young concerts within on the east coast? Or will she be doing all west coast stuff now that I'm here? ;> Anyway.. I am not about to go read 670k of digests from the few days that I was gone. Thanks anyway.. :P maybe I'll grep it for my name or something. :> eheh I'm going to resume tape copying for everyone on September 10th. That'll give me time to get back into the swing of things here. I'll be automating my bootlegs page so you can make a form to send me via snail mail along with it automatically figuring out how many tapes/etc. In any case, you can check out what I have at http://www.endor.org/ I acquired a few more thanks to Lisa and others. =) Everyone except for Chad and Kyle should have their tapes by now. I'm in the process of copying Kyle's in my spare time and awaiting Chad's snail mail. If anyone sent me snail mail and it bounces, I'm sorry.. shouldn't happen, but with Rochester's mail.. anything's possible. Cuz I have to put my name on the mailbox and I haven't been able to do that yet cuz I don't have rent money so I'm not "here" yet. :P I don't know how much of jerks they are yet. If you send anything now, by the time it arrives it should be no problem though. :) Anyone have any suggestions for Jewel related pages? I love programming and have been starting to automate certain portions of my pages. I'm horrible at graphic art tho, so don't expect much there. ;P At least I can do color coordination. ;> I'll leave the graphic stuff up to Dennis Harris and others who are great at that. =) Feel free to e-mail me, but PLEASE don't send anything via snail mail until after September 10th. Err.. 'course unless you work it out with me first. :> (Hey..if it ARRIVES on or after that day.. no prob tho) Thanks, Gerrit - -- "All you need in this life is ignorance and confindence, and then success is sure." - Mark Twain ------------------------------ From: Leave the shadows dancing Date: Tue, 03 Sep 1996 01:19:09 -0500 (EST) Subject: Jewel on Letterman + Other Summer Appearances I don't have any thing to say about it cuz.. I don't have any of them yet. :( Altho if you ever took a look at what I do have on Jewel (http://www.endor.org/) it's quite a bit. ;) I'll even send a blank video + free blank video 4u + return postaged package if necessary. =) From the sounds of it, I missed something special tonight. :( Gerrit - -- "Anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job." - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy ------------------------------ From: Larry G Date: Mon, 2 Sep 1996 22:32:05 -0700 (PDT) Subject: Re: jewel-digest V1 #532 Someone please tell the new guy that Igor is Kathy. My opinion on this issue has been a study in conflict since I first saw Miss Kilcher perform at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz last February (i.e., an eon ago). I, like Sean and I am sure many of my fellow "angels," would have liked to keep Jewel as a secret, all the better to preserve the sense of intimacy that she has cultivated with her fans since her earliest days at the InnerChange. And I, as I believe Sean has in the past, admit to the hideous selfishness of this desire. Yet Jewel is a fantastic musician and, as those of you who have had the opportunity of meeting her have attested time and time again, a fabulous person as well. I have yet to verify such claims for myself -- however much a fellow angel keeps prodding me to do so -- but I have never failed to place my wishes for Miss Kilcher's success far above any desire to be one of a smaller contingent of fans. Why do I bring this subject up now? Because I'm afraid that the topic is now moot. Jewel, through her Letterman performance, has convinced me that she has thoroughly broken herself from the grasp of those that would strive to prevent her cult from becoming a legitimate religion. She has the look of a true professional now, of someone who knows that more than one million people, still a gigantic number despite the prevalence of "billion" and "trillion" in our time, have purchased her album, absorbed her music, and enjoyed it. As nervous as she must have been -- The Late Show surely remains a heart-pounder -- she didn't reveal a single hint of anxiety before cameras that would transmit her every nuance to hundreds of thousands of television viewers. What is the "look of a true professional"? It doesn't have much to do with how she dressed or how pretty she was -- though boy-oh-boy was she exquisite tonight -- but rather the aura of confidence that seemed to permeate the performance. The first hint of the aura was the disproportionate response from the audience at the mention of her name -- albeit not hard when the big guest on the show is Chuck Norris. The second was seeing her with Flea in the background -- ponder that phrase: "Flea in the BACKGROUND". And the third; see if you can follow this one ... As insulting as the following comment may be, I didn't entirely recognize the woman I saw on the television. I've seen Jewel up close twice, which was enough to destroy the barrier between a "celebrity" and a tangible person, but that wall began erecting itself again tonight. That was most definitely Jewel on my television tonight, but she just LOOKED like SOMEONE ELSE. I give up, I can't explain it, but it's really REALLY eerie. This all reminds me of something I wrote several months ago: That a tidal wave was just visible on the horizon. Now I'm drowning. Merry Christmas! - - Carter Navarro, Who Will Again Tear Down the Wall In Fresno P.S. - Remember my glorious review of Orbital, that British ambient group? Their single, called "The Box", is that piece of music you keep hearing during the MTV Video Music Awards commercials. P.P.S. - Toni, I finally found an excellent quality bootleg of a live NIN/David Bowie performance. It's an imported CD called "Children of the Night" and at $25 it's a bit expensive, but since I've been looking for a good recording from that tour since before I joined this list, I thought it was worth it. The Reznor/Bowie duet on "Hurt" is as fantastic as I remember it. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V1 #534 ***************************
