You have obviously missed the spirit of this list, which further means you probably have not had the pleasure of meeting these cyberfolks in the real world. If you want a structured, predictable list digest, go to another one (or lurk on the upcoming Jewel News Only List). Go to one that has members who are willing to SELL you boots, instead of giving them to you. Go to one that gives you a laundry list of dry facts. Go to one that keeps everyone anonymous and isolated. (BTW, one that speaks YOUR language. In my memory, the only other poster who has been as insulting and offensive with their posts is the MJB.) If you really think we're assholes, then you either 1) never bothered to take the time to truly KNOW any of us, or 2) simply don't have the same outlook we do. Either way, best of luck wherever you go. I have met well over 150 people from this list, face to face, in weekend-long settings as diverse as the Catskill foothills and the beaches along the Atlantic Ocean. The vast majority of them are not computer geeks, and certainly not "losers", as you call them. Attitude-wise, they are the cream of our society, people who are willing to open up, share, and socialize outside of their "assigned" circles. They are outgoing, interesting individuals I enjoy being around. If our world is to recover from its downward social spiral (due to technology worship and the overblown importance of the almighty dollar), it will largely be done by such people with community-minded attitudes who are willing to listen to their fellow man without bitching about how their precious time is being wasted. It's time we all slowed up and smelled the roses. This list is a veritable ROSE GARDEN, so please don't stomp on it. Just my opinion, but I'm committed to it. - -- Dennis Harris ------------------------------ From: cyberdude123@juno.com (matt r myhra) Date: Mon, 02 Sep 1996 04:27:25 EDT Subject: The NJC subject I think all of you should stop with that subject I mean, cm'on, this IS a Jewel list, after all. Angels... It's really sad to read about all the stuff that people are posting on the NJC. I just got finished with reading a message from a fellow "angel" that, to be put nicely, was angry and very disturbed about the way the list is right now. The "angel" totally missed the point, in my opinion, of the list. The list's function is not only a way of communicating recent news of Jewel to her fans, but also a way of ther fans to meet AND communicate with one another. It is a social center where we can come together and practice the some of the ideas that Jewel talks about in her songs.... such as being tolerant and compassionate to others. GOD doesn't that sound sort of like a cult????:) I can understand why this "angel" is so annoyed with the list right now. I just got back from a 4 day vacation and had over 400 messages in my box, and most of them were NJCs. But I also understand that with every good there must be a bad to balance things out. I've met alot of great people on this list... some I can even call good to great friends. I've talked , laughed, ate, and joked with them, and have had the best time of my summer with them. Due to my recent experience in helping to put JS together, I have met over 200+ angels on the list, and NEVER would I characterize any of them as being computer geeks, or "assholes" either!! What follows(below) is a corrected layout of the Jewelstock Tapes with definate titles on a few that were in question. Also an updated reposting of basic info that I originally posted earlier in August. Many are still writing with questions answered in this post, so for their benefit, here it is again. I believe Mike will be posting branch signup instructions in the next 24 hours. I very much look forward to finally sharing these with all EDAs. I hope you'll find them well worth the wait & I anxiously await reactions! Best wishes, Alan Hi Everyone, We are now beginning preliminary stages of distributing the "soon to be legendary" Jewelstock audio tapes to all listmembers who want them. PLEASE read this ENTIRE post BEFORE you email me about anything. I apologize for its length, but I'm going to try to answer as many questions as possible in this one post. For now, it will be an audio only tree. Although Skinny Pete & crew did a really wonderful job on the videos, there are no plans for distributing them now. The videos may or may not be used in some as yet undecided future project. All the songs (EXCLUDING the electric sets & Patty Griffin's set) from BOTH nights will be included on this set of cassette tapes. Due to the amount of expected requests, this tree is going to be a mindblowing amount of work & we are going to need everyone's patience & co-operation to do this in a somewhat organized way. Regarding distribution: We have 4 totally responsible main sites (Dan S, Mike C, Richard C & myself). I'm sure everyone agrees that all in this group of 4 has the lists best interests at heart. We will each make at least 10 sets of the tapes which are going to be 3 X 90 minute cassettes, probably. These will go to 40 branches who will supply us their 3 blanks & self adressed return postaged mailer. To be a branch, just follow Mikes forthcoming instructions. That post will explain what is needed when making sets of Jewelstock tapes for others, who only need supply you with thier own blanks & return postaged mailer. Most will be USA branches, but at least 2 Canadian branches & an Australian branch will probably be needed as well as a "non-North American branch". This setup alone will get approximately 400 copies of the tapes distributed fairly quickly. ALL copies of the treed tapes will be in cassette format. There will be NO DAT or Hi Fi Videotape copies available at Jewel & Lenedra's specific instruction. I know this will piss off a few, but there will be no debating this. Lastly, I ask you all to PLEASE keep this tape to yourself & other EDA's. This is a very special gift from Jewel & Lenedra and it is best if it stays among us. It's not a promotional tool and need not be circulated outside this group of friends. It's prefered that it stays that way to avoid bootleggers gaining access easily to this high quality material. You are still being trusted with material likely to be used on the forthcoming album. I personally consider it a rare priviledge and I hope you do too. Also, PLEASE do NOT discuss making CD's of this material on the list (even at cost for fellow EDA's or any of that). It will definately be defiantly ignoring our wishes if you do. All we can say is "please" on this, but we trust this "one of a kind" group of people & can only hope you'll be respectful on this touchy subject. So, all that "Mr BB sounding" stuff said, I very much look forward to getting these to all of you. They are truly wonderful. It IS happening! In closing, let me settle the Jewelstock encore debate. This was reasonable to me. So I was there at 12:15 to find out that standbys where sold out. Damn! I could have gotten there earlier if I had known. A friend told me that if you want to meet the person outside be there at 3:00 so again I took the advice. I was bored and it was hot so I bought a homeless person a sandwich and a soda. He thanked me rather profusely and left the scene. At precisely 3:00 pm cops started fencing an area off. Then Jewel got out of her car with her band. I waited. When she turned around I asked. SDA:Jewel, do you have a moment? Jewel:Yea, Oh hi! SDA:Would you?(I handed her StL and a marker) Jewel(to her band):Have you guys seen this yet? Band looked at it. Jewel:I asked my fans to pose for it after the show. SDA:If I told you how I got it, you may not believe me. Jewel:How much did you pay? SDA:seventy five Jewel and the band:Gasp! SDA:I offered that much though, it's not like someone ripped me off. Jewel signed the outer covoring of the CD, To Jared(she draws an adorable little heart with wings) and signs Jewel. Her dress was a little obnoxious for my liking but then again nothing wrong with being sexy when everybody in America is watching. It's black and lacey and looks more like a lingerie then a dress to wear on national television. Anyway I drove back to New Jersey at that point knowing that I wasn't getting tickets and got ticketed for recklace driving(not a word Lauren). Do you believe that? What the hell is recklace driving in Western midtown Manhattan aka Hell's kitchen. Damn cops have nothing better to do then harrass me. For thoughs of you who send checks or tapes, I bought the tapes and I'll be sending them out tomorrow. Jewel is such a sweetheart. Amy ------------------------------ From: ts140@gnn.com (Tim Schoenberg) Date: Mon, 02 Sep 1996 15:44:31 Subject: NJC- The NJC debate Hello Angeles, I generally don't like to contribute to this sort of argument. I=20 however was so stunned and shocked by the ignorance printed by Mr.=20 Hooks that I find it necessary to express my opinion on the=20 subject. Now, just my quick .02. I think the larger issue that is=20 always at risk in this "type" of debate is freedom. The very basic=20 freedom's of speech, expression, and thought. They are often=20 clouded in the rhetoric Mr.Hooks expouses. He would like us to=20 think it is stupid and a waste of time for us to contribute ideas=20 or thought on things other then Jewel to this group. He would like=20 us to think it is a waste of his very precious and limited time for=20 him to be receiving all this Non Jewel Content mail. He would like=20 us to think that this is a JEWEL only list. I have been a member of=20 this list for over a year and I have always understood, right from=20 the first day I received mail that list was fast and loose. It=20 didn't follow any traditional patterns and allowed a lot of=20 expression of ant thoughts or ideas. Eventually people on the list=20 wanted a way to discern Jewel content from Non Jewel Content. Thus=20 was born the NJC symbol. It is a logical and simple solution. If a=20 message contains a NJC then you may simply erase it without reading=20 to get rid of it. It is that simple. What he is really saying is that he is narrow-minded and doesn=92t=20 have the mental capacity to process opinion's that are new or=20 perhaps different then his. He is saying, "what you think is less=20 important than what I think, so don't bother me with it." He is=20 saying "your freedom's don't matter. I am tell you what to look at=20 and read, because I limit your ability to receive these thoughts=20 and ideas." Not only is this a dangerous thing to tell people, it=20 goes against the very nature of the Net and more importantly IMHO=20 the Constitution of the United States. Since when do I need to have=20 someone tell me what I can read or what I can look at or for that=20 matter what I can listen to. I totally understand and relate to not=20 liking or wanting to read, listen or look at certain ideas or=20 thoughts that run counter to mine. It is my right however to have=20 the choice, and specifically at issue here, the easy access to=20 these ideas. If we follow Mr. Hooks advice we might as well ban=20 books from school's and librarie's, remove movies from shelves,=20 destroy CD, and of course control this group and the rest of the=20 Internet. Since the Supreme Court found the Internet Decency Act=20 UNCONSTITUTIONAL I will pass on all those options that I just=20 listed. So I hope you see this is an issue of freedom. Don't be fooled into=20 thinking it is anything else. If we can't say what we want to say=20 here there is little point for this group. If a person is having a=20 problem with the small effort it takes to erase the NJC, then leave=20 the list. You don't want to be in a group of intelligent,=20 thoughtful, free-thinking individual's. I for one will not ALLOW=20 anyone to try and remove my freedom. It is an individual's choice=20 to see, hear, and look at things. I definitely don't need someone=20 trying to tell me what I can look at, hear, or see. This group has=20 always been about Jewel's music and the ideas' in her music. I=20 think she supports freedom as can be seen from her lyrics. Why=20 don't we all do the same for a group of her namesake. In closing, let me say perhaps we could do one more thing to=20 clarify the NJC messages. If we could be more accurate and=20 descriptive in the title as to what the message is about. I know I don't want to read all the NJC, but some are interesting and=20 informative. If we could be very descriptive and literate in out=20 titles, then it would be easier to decide what to read and what not=20 to read without looking at the whole message. Sorry this ran on but=20 I think I had to let all of you know my ideas and our=20 responsibility to the idea of freedom. I want you to read this and=20 to really think about what I am saying. I invite intelligent and=20 responsible comments. Thanks for your time. Tim =20 ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V1 #531 ***************************
