Folks, everyone take a deep breath. Let it out. Repeat. Now smile. Let's get the NJC/News controversy settled, okay? 1) There is a News Only list being developed. It will have no "social" content, just relevant news information regarding Jewel. The current list will include these news posts as well. Subscribe to what interests you. The social banter may bother someone from time to time, but kindly side post someone if you think they are going TOO FAR TOO OFTEN. And relax. Hiranya isn't going to leave our list, she will simply post to the News List, where 90% of her information belongs. I suspect she will continue watching the regular "social" list as well. 2) When you post non-Jewel content, please use "NJC: blah blah" as the subject header. If it's borderline, use "NJC" anyway. Please JUST DO IT. (Uncle Dennis does!) 3) Refrain from quoting an entire post in it's glorious entirety. I just read a brief paragraph responding to a 72 line previous post quote. Funny thing was, the quoted post was totally unnecessary! I don't want to scroll through four screens of NOTHING. When you see people do this excessively, politely side post them. Ten side posts pointing this out should convince anyone they may need to be more selective in their references. 4) Shorten the .sigs, please. If it's a funny quote or drawing, post it once. Then don't do it again until you find another equally funny one. If you can keep the excessive headers and trailers from your email package from showing up as well, please do so. 5) Don't post when you're pissed off. Compose your post and walk away from it. Come back later and edit it down for brevity. You'll be glad you did (and we certainly will appreciate it!). Just advice. Please consider it. I'd rather settle these ongoing B.S. arguments now and spend tomorrow's bandwidth on some of that unique "mindless social banter." - -- Dennis Harris p.s. I remember you. Oddly enough, you are one of a few longtime members who elude my mind when i try to recall them (as witnessed in my rolecalls). second: mr. Notte, like Ben Kenobi to Yoda, I told you there was another. At least at syracuse. and about your MTV post which I will paste here: >her to A) win and be thrust into the mainstream with that "who sucked out >the feeling" band B) lose and go back underground a la Tracy Chapman in >the early 90's or C) some other option? I assume you are talking about Hootie in the first instance. Anyways, your options seem a little limited with the "1 will happen then two will result" logic. I do like the inclusion of C, though. I mean, as far as I can tell, jewel has already been "thrust" into the mainstream (I'd prefer 'moseyed') and the MTV award will do bupkiss to helping or hindering her career. I don't know all the details about how and why Tracy disappeared after her first album, but I don't think losing some big award had anything to do with it. People just weren't interested in her enough to keep her in the spotlight is what I guess happened to her. I'd be happy to see Jewel win, but I wouldn't be totally crushed if she lost because awards don't mean much as long as the product stays true. So the awards are just gloss and sure, some people MIGHT buy her album just because she wins, or maybe not, but who is going to remain a fan if they don't like the rest of the album? And I personally think that the album is difficult to get into, especially coming from a mainstream earpoint (mainstream being anything from alternative to adult contemporary). Jewel will continue to gain fans who are hardcore like us, fans who like her enough to keep the album, and fans who just like one or two songs. That's the way it is with most artists. I think that I've said it before, but I wouldn't mind seeing Jewel traveling a similar path to that of Sarah McLachlan. Sarah started young but concentrated on her craft and the audience and fanbase followed. her first album sold very well (and still does), her second was a bold step and garnered even more fans, and her third slowly became multi-platinum while showcasing an even more bold step. She progressed in concert venue size from clubs to theaters, but still managed to keep her performances intimate. I'll cut off the Sarah path around 1995 since I feel that Sarah has gone into an adult contemporary funk that I don't like, but she still does amazing stuff at that (and still manages to capture the heart of her faithful fumblers). So that would leave Jewel performing in 1000-4000 people theaters that are beautiful and intimate and so cool. > Personally, I wish her all the success in the world. But there is >a selfish side of me that doesn't want to share her with the rest of the >world, esp. the "despite all my rage, I'm still a rat in a cage" crowd. Why don't you Hook up with Sean (hah bad pun, sorry Sean). I think that we are already sharing her with this crowd since I remember a youngster (don't think that I hate kids cause I'm only 18 but then again, I do hate kids:)) going by the screen name Corgan and professing a support of the Smashing Pumpkins. But I think I understand your point and I'll get to that a little later. >I don't want to see Jewelstock 98' at Giants Stadium. Hell, I don't think that I would want to see any GAME at Giants Stadium. Wait, is this the New York Giants or the San Francisco Giants; ah well, Candlestick or New Jersey, I'll take Camden Yards over either any day:) 3) Another Notte post (what is this, pick on Jay night?) spoke of: >not at JewelStock), some drunken or just ignorant slob always feels they >have to make a comment about the size of her tits or "what they'd do to >her if they had five minutes alone." This pisses me off to no end. Maybe >it's just me, but I think she deserves just a little more respect than >that. Yeah. Wouldn't everyone deserve more respect than that? Ok almost everyone. >She's not a member of L7 of (heven forfend) Courtney Love. She deserves >just as much respect as any other serious artist. Woah. Watch your wording here (I know that someone can nitpick my posts and point out my faults). Not that I am a fan of L7 or Courtney Love (although I do like some L7 songs) but are you saying that they are not serious artists and so do not deserve respect? Wait, I guess maybe not as much respect as Jewel, maybe? But, anyways, from what I know about L7 (and granted, it ain't much) I would think that they do deserve respect for having started a national organization for something or other that is important (I forget what), and for being politically outspoken for women. I don't know how much you know about them, so you might have dirt on them; I can't help wondering if you just feel that scary "dykeish" wimmin (and I do know some lesbians who use the word dyke) are allowed to have men make comments at them (but I'm pretty sure that you don't feel this way, I'm just airing it out). What about the Gits whose lead singer was raped and killed, or Joan Jett who is a respectable citizen of Baltimore, or...oh pooh. Can't think of anyone else right now. Oh, and about courtney not being attractive, I have to say that she is kind of attractive with the brown hair now. But I still don't find her appealing. >Take Tori por ejemplo. >You don't seer people throwing anything (though I saw flowers once) or >yelling lewd obscenities at her. It makes even an EDA want to put I think that these things do happen, even to Tori. But, I think that she feeds off of some of it and loves to create the sexual image (look at her grind away at the piano bench). But, with the atmosphere and seating of theaters (which is what she and Sarah seem to play a lot), the people don't get as rowdy as bar/club/outdoor audiences do. 4) I'm not gonna say much on the Hot topic of Sean Hooks provocative post. I just wish that Sean would not be so offensive when he writes. I don't consider myself to be a computer geek (I know very little about computers other than how to play games and how to do email), but I do consider email to be a part of my life and have made many friends through it. Real friends. And I do have a life outside of computers, but I do really have a ball here and to have Sean write: >If you can't keep your comments to yourself or you're so socially >deprived that you need to sit at your computer and attempt to communicate >with the world by wasting time and airspace by spouting off about things >other than Jewel, first get a life, you're a loser. makes me want to punch the screen. A loser? I've lost something, I've lost some of the respect that i have for Sean (but I still do respect him). I could be wrong. period. no "but I'm not" because I doubt myself all the time. 5) Rachel is certified to be the EDA whore? Can I be her pimp? 6)Dizz-Knee Land. I just flipped off President George. That song is dated, I should say:) This is long enough. If you didn't read it, then you're too cool for me:) And if you did read it...Sucker! Just joking.
