The spirit of Edie Brickell lives on." I can't decide how much of that is supposed to be sarcastic, I happen to like Edie Brickell so I think being compared to her would be good. People in college who have heard of PIRG (i.e, MassPIRG in Massachusetts) Rock the Vote is a very similar organization. The only thing I don't like about RTV is that they do not come out and pubically tell people that they are trying to more than get people to vote, they want you to vote certain ways on certain issues. I used to believe in the if you don't vote you can't complain theory, but now I don't think that people don't vote out of apathy. I think they don't vote because the believe that it's not going to make a differences since all politicians are basically the same. Democrats and Republicans need each other to be the bad guys, don't believe for a second either party would be happy we complete power (who would they blame when things went wrong). I think it took courage for Jewel to say she doesn't vote because she doesn't see anyone worth voting for when it is 'cool' in the day of MTV to spend your time preaching about your favorite political causes/candidates. Reading all this stuff people are talking about, none of it really having anything to do with Jewel. Which I don't really mind because I don't expect there to be a constant in-flux of pertinant news and info about Jewel that we haven't already heard a million times over before. And if anything does come up I can trust people here to mention it. I'd bring things up myself except I live out in the middle of effing nowhere and hear about concerts and magazines and contests at "your local Macy's." Well, my "local" Macy's is over four hours drive away! But I hear about stuff regarding my absolute favorite artist here and really appreciate it. The pointless banter adds an atmosphere to this list whereas if it were just Jewel info it would be stiff and uncomfortable, like being at a press conference in your underware (whereas I can read this list in my underwear and not be the slightest bit uncomfortable.) So I've finally decided to comment about some of the stuff being talked about. First, smoking: smoking is bad. Really, really, really bad. Especially when you're on the interstate(Even in Hawaii, but not Australia, sorry guys.) and your car starts smoking. I mean, that's the worst. And you just know the garage is gonna charge you a mint-and-a-half for the tow. Also, you should know that if you smoke after having sex, you're doing it too fast!!!! poly - many ticks - blood-sucking parasites Fuedalism: Where it's your count that votes. Typing messages online gives you the option of thinking carefully about your words and being able to think over what you want to say before anyone else actually sees or hears it. -- You have a delete key, use it. 3. Don't believe half the stuff you see onlint. 4. And just ignore the other half. 5. As you type a message, if you're not smiling (or at least in a "good" mood, define "good" however you like), stop writing. If you don't like writing a message it's certain no one will like reading it. 6. Take these steps when writing a message. 1) Decide if you want to write it. 2) Write whatever you want to say. 3) Delete it. 4) Write whatever you still want to say. 5) Ask yourself if anyone else *really* wants to read it. 6) Then send it if you still really want to. 7a) The internet is *not* a religion. 7b) Usenet is *not* the bible. 7c) Bill Gates is *not* God. Back up on my soap box for another little sermon. The purpose of Rock the Vote is to get people (especially young peoples) to vote. Period. In that, it accomplishes it's means very well. At least according to all all the posts hammering it for yelling "vote, vote, vote!!" You see, the first step is to get people to the polls, then we can bombard them with the hyper-financed campaigns of the canidates. eMpTV has picked a focused goal (which btw, it does very well) and set about accomplishing that goal. Telling people about the canidates does no good, if they aren't going to vote in November anyway. So, MTV is going after the primary goal, and leaving the rest to the canidates. IMHO, RtV is one of MTV's better projects. It isn't their job to tell people who to vote for. They don't need to spend their $$$ on something that the politcal parties are spending millions and millions of our tax dollars for. MTV _is_ doing a service to our society, by urging young voters to look at the issues that are important to them and vote accordingly. MTV is filling in a void that has been blantantly apparent in the past: young people don't vote (a primary reason health care sucks right now and most of us don't have it). Voting on-line is an excellent idea!!! Lyrics Archive Hot-Potato: how fun!! I'll take a turn! =) Platnium sent, but not sold?? The horror!!
