I would think that they would make a bigger promotional effort about it. Any support outside any venue or video studio could only do her good even if she doesn't have time to talk to eda's. We just want to support her and spread the news. Anyone have any advice? Sinjin is it worth driving up there and looking for her. It wouldn't mean we would get in the way. And does anybody know about her shows in October in L.A.? And how to get tickets. Where will these shows be and who is selling the tickets? I guess we will start checking in to ticket agencies. ------------------------------ From: MikeAlow@aol.com Date: Thu, 22 Aug 1996 23:31:02 -0400 Subject: Re: John Hiatt In a message dated 96-08-22 13:13:32 EDT, you write: A friend of mine who was there said it was "Have a Little Faith in Me". Nothing says "I Love You" like a box that says "As Seen On TV" on it. Lots of topics to get verbal about, so I've made consumption a bit easier with headings. CIGARETTES "American Spirit" cigarettes are David Lynch's brand. I'm not sure which to prefer: shall I submit myself to the enormous probability of developing lung cancer via Marlboro? Or to the greater probability of going insane (this applies to me only, since I'm probably already on the brink) via American Spirit? Garrr-mon-boh-ZEE-ah! I am the arm! And I talk like ... zees! BOBOBOBOBOBOBOBO! And I said it a few months ago but I'll say it again: even though she doesn't smoke, Jewel Kilcher would make a fabulous Marlboro Woman. NEW & IMPROVED "CARNIVORE"? I'm not sure I like the new title for "Carnivore." What the hell is a "Carnivore Asshole?" For some reason I can't dispose of the thought that Jewel has created a very adult version of "You Big Poopy-Head!", with the same on-the-spot, not-quite-in-complete-control-of-your-vocabulary quality that punctuates the insults of toddlers. I'm lucky I wasn't at this show, since I may have burst into hysterical laughter upon hearing the title. I'm sure Jewel hopes for giggles when she announces the song, but the maniacal guffawing from the front row may change her mind. And I still haven't forgotten my friend's theory that the song was written about Sean Penn, but I'll stay Swiss on that matter for fear of becoming a gossip-monger. "NIKOS" & THE LATTER-DAY SAINTS Speaking of metamorphosing music, I'm not entirely in favor of the new "Nikos" either. The final P.S. is a nice touch, but there's really no reason to rid the "Mormon" in the excommunication lyric. I suppose going platinum may convince some artists that they should remove potentially offensive lyrics from their music, but if "Nikos" is an entirely true story then Jewel is repeating historical facts and not biased opinions on the quality of Mormonism. "Excommunicated by the Mormon church" is a neutral lyric, and I find myself curious at what prompted Jewel to alter it. And if y'alls memory serves, you'll recall that half of my family is Mormon (not the close relatives, though), perhaps contributing to my curiosity about this event. ARGUMENTS Oy vey, vhat's vith all zah ahguments? It's as if some people around here ENJOY getting angry! I know we aren't perfect angels, which is complete hooey to me anyway since I'm an atheist, but existentialism doesn't mean I choose not to be friendly, courteous, and occasionally cuddly! The guidelines for courtesy are admittedly hazy for some, including myself, but when debate arises over any issue (in our case, smoking), one guideline seems perfectly sensible and easy to adhere to: debase the argument and not the arguer. Ideological battles are won by destroying the opponent's arguments, not by destroying the opponent himself or herself. JEWEL VS. SHAKESPEARE In a contest over the quality of material, Shakespeare wins three seconds into the first round. No one can beat the Bard. Performance-wise, however, Jewel wins. Shakespeare productions pop up everywhere all the time. Jewel is a rare sight, and one worth skipping a play over. Besides, you can read any of Shakespeare's works and imagine the performance for yourself. Hard as I may try, I can't capture Jewel in a daydream. FRESNO FAIR OCT. 8 Will any Californian EDAs be trekking to Fresno a month and a half from now? Looks as if Tom Proven and I will be in attendance at the Fresno Fair, although the Tuesday date will certainly make it a rush job for those of us partaking in collegiate endeavors or in the grasp of gainful employment. NEIL YOUNG'S S.F. DATE Does anyone know yet if Jewel will tag along with Young to his San Francisco show? If she is, I'd vastly prefer showing up for that one than driving to Fresno. Yes, I know I could do both, but I'm only willing to drive three hours to Fresno because I haven't seen Jewel since May and I don't know when she'll be hitting the California coastline next. And it's not entirely irrelevant that I also would like to see Neil Young. JEWEL'S GUITARS Big Blue Named after IBM. It took me a full four months (when I tagged the guitar with the name after seeing it on Letterman) to realize this. Perhaps Capacious Indigo really would have been better. I've known about IBM's nickname for years, but oddly enough the connection didn't cross my mind until yesterday. Old Yeller Named after the second-saddest dog story around. First for me is "Where the Red Fern Grows." First dog gets killed by a mountain lion. Second dies of loneliness. Both are buried together. A red fern grows on their grave, symbolizing love. I cried SO HARD when I read this one so many years ago. NEWBIES Come one come all. Easy steps to success as an EveryDay Angel: 1. Read the FAQ. 2. Hit the web pages. 3. Lurk for a few weeks. 4. Post. Blossom Music Center. I saw Milla there last year and loved the place. The way the "bowl" is shaped, I was able to see and hear the stage performers adequately even though I had a lawn seat. Plus, there was a nice little picnic area at the top where you could sit and listen to the show without interfering with the other attendees. At BuzzardFest, they had several other bands playing up on the lawn, so you could actually get pretty close to them while listening. At X-Fest (Deer Creek), the second stage was set way, way off to the side where you had to walk 15 minutes to get there. >p.s. The local police are very bored and get their kicks busting as many >people as possible on minor possession charges. They should be in for a >nice little hoe-down since this IS a Neil Young concert. Oink. To my surprise, the cops at Blossom were uniformly polite and helpful. A friend who worked there during summers off school tells me that someone appears to hire the workers at Blossom very carefully; I can believe it. - -- | Greg Dunn | "Information is not knowledge; | | gregdunn@indy.net | knowledge is not wisdom; | | GregDunn@aol.com | wisdom is not truth." | | http://members.aol.com/gregdunn/ | -- Frank Zappa | ------------------------------ From: Jjaawwss@aol.com Date: Fri, 23 Aug 1996 00:44:08 -0400 Subject: Thanx 4 sharin'...... my friend at the august 13th show at nissian pavillion in virginia screamed out 'thanx 4 sharin'' after jewel told da story of little bro on da phone sayin' when she sings it looks like she has 2 pee......... she then leflt da mic.... she came after he shouted & said 'im sharin cause....' ......... i am wonderin' if jewel actually heard him......... anyone wit info please help..... ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V1 #498 ***************************
