I think that many performers say things to get a reaction out of the audience (hell, they are performing in public which means they want at least some attention, right, so why not see if you can make them eat out of your hands), and the audience plays right along even if they agree or disagree. It's a weird phenomenon. I betcha there were some Dole supporters who cheered; and when she tells the marijuana story, I'm sure there are non-smokers who cheer. Ani DiFranco is a good example of getting a rise out of the audience, especially the song Untouchable Face where she sings Fuck you in the chorus and everyone goes wild because your not supposed to use dirty language in a song:) I hope this makes sense. It's kinda the same thing about her screaming that she got to play with Bob Dylan and people screaming who normally wouldn't care a spit about Bob Dylan or her saying that Such-a-city is the best place on earth (although I think she really means it in San Diego) to get a reaction from the locals and even the non-locals who traveled for a couple hours to see her. You guys get my point yet? And yes Jewel has said that she doesn't care for the whole Party system thing and I do believe that Hiranya (if you don't know who she is then read the friggin FAQ) said that Jewel was approached by Rock the Vote but has decided to write a letter and post it on the net about how she feels about politics and how crazy it is that people look up not only to political parties, but also to celebrities like herself, to shape their own views on politics and life. Hey people on the list, lets use them smileys a little more liberally, huh? And Rob of RobandTammy fame spoke of political labels. They suck, don't they? Hey Rob and Tammy, thanks again for being like parents to us at Hampton Beach and supplying the nachos and cheese and such. YOu guys are too cool for words:) Barnabus, wouldn't it be only 15 more years before you can inflict yourself upon the the world of US politics as president? (grin) And I do believe that it would be copyright infringement to use a picture from a mag unless you asked them for permission. Phil, about the t-shirt design: I dunno about it, but I do know that on the Sarah M. list, we have had some trouble recently in legal affairs concerning the use of Sarah's picture, signature, or any lyrics. Nettwerk, her parent company, supported our efforts to do a list shirt, but apparently, Sarah has a deal with a merchandising company called Niceman and they are pretty uptight about anyone using anything that refers to Sarah. So we are thinking about using a quote from somewhere else that reflects the nature of the list and not making any direct references to Sarah (after all, it would be a list t-shirt for us to spot each other). Templeton of Seattle: Jewel will not tour the us until late october/november if even that (she is scheduled to tour with Bob Dylan again at that time), but that is tentative stuff. She has played in that area quite a number of times (there was a frequent poster named Neile Graham from your area who is currently gone because she is doing writing workshops in Virginia, who wrote about her shows in the Pacific Northwest), so there is little doubt in my mind that she will return when she tours again. Check out any of the websites of Adam Longfellow, Colin Stuckless, or Aaron Walker for tourdates as they are available. This is about it for this post. I received a letter from Atlantic Records that I am violating copyright laws by posting copyrighted Jewel lyrics on the internet and I need to remove them now to keep my website. Within two hours, I received an email from my server provider, Sprynet, saying I need to remove copyrighted lyrics and I will be blocked. I wonder if this is only the album songs they are referring to or do they own anything she writes even if she doesn't record it on Atlantic? I wouldn't think so. I wonder if this means I can just take the album lyrics off and be okay? Is this the record company or Jewel's management cracking down? The mad bomber? A anti-Jewel person? Someone trying to sabotage what I would think is a great free promotional tool for Jewel? What harm is this doing? Seems to me like it only helps her. Is this a first strike? Look at the all the lyrics out there on the web for artists of all kinds. Heck, Tori's on Atlantic and has eighty sites devoted to her, many with lyrics. Any other webmasters hear of such a problem? Could someone check my site and let me know what they can or can't access? I'm not sure what is happening yet and I want to know if I'm up to the public or just myself. I have seen pictures of Jewel from a performance in '95. Almost EVERY picture has her with a cigarette in her mouth or hand! (if you would like, I will attach a few to a post..) I know you guys have her pictured in your minds as an 'angel', but even if she smokes, what the hell does it matter? I have met many angelic souls who partake in a multitude of habits. One of them being smoking. I don't think it is the tabacco or the nicotine that harms you. If it was, they would say on the package that TOBACCO or NICOTINE may cause cancer, birth defects, blah blah blah. In fact, nicotine has never been shown to cause cancer. I do know that in most cigarettes, that there are over 300 chemicals added to the tobacco. If you smoke lights, your actually risking more harm, due to the fact that they replace tobacco with 'filler'. The testing on smoking is inconclusive, at best. It is all probabilitys. There are SO many other factors that determine YOUR risk to smoking, such as: geographical location, heredity, stress, physical condition, and most of all YOUR MENTAL ATTITUDE!! I suggest that if you smoke, that you try AMERICAN SPIRIT cigarettes. They are 100% ADDITIVE FREE! They even put it on the package. If you would like more information about them, call them! 1-800-332-5595 MADE FROM 100% CHEMICAL-ADDITIVE-FREE, WHOLE LEAF, NATURAL TOBACCO AND NOTHING ELSE. Anyways, there is no way to determine if smoking will affect ones voice. There are many performers/vocalists that smoke, and have smoked their entire carrer. And alot of them are fine.
