And she modified the title of Carnivore to "Never Trust Your Pink Fleshy Heart to a Carnivore, Asshole." (I think shes done that before, though) towards the end of the show i heard a lady scream, "show us your ass!" from behind me. I was so surprised that i couldn't even shoot her a dirty look... as we walked away after Jewel's set, I couldn't even count how many people were talking about how good of a show she did, and the even more people attempting to yodel (im not proud to say i was one of them.. even after hearing Chime Bells 5 times live and a good 15 billion on various bootlegs.. it was somehow better at such a large place with so many people screaming for it). alright, so there are my memoirs of MSG.. don't ask me about Neil, we (Cara, Sara, Jared & I) didn't stay for him... one last thing.. if anyone has a good recorder for their computer.. Cara and I were discussing if it was possible to mix Jewel saying, "F&$# YOU!" to those two ladies in that story at Irving PLaza in May with her singing, "I'm Sensitive.." and make it into a wav file.. because i think that would be pretty cool.. lauren PS i am listening to an excellent copy of the NH show right now.. most likely one of the best bootlegs ive heard in a long time. if it didn't know any better i would think it was a soundboard copy.. ill be posting to the list sometime next week or so about where you too can get a first generation.. i don't think its going to be treed because there are so many other trees going on right now.. if anyone heard cara's bootleg at oceancrest it sounds even better in two channels.. i totally didn't realize it was this good.. ------------------------------ From: James McGarry Date: Tue, 20 Aug 1996 14:31:41 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Re: WHAT?! What can I say except that it prooves my point that she is not fit for venues this big. The performance wasn't bad but it was a far cry from Jewelstock or even the Tradewinds show. She played to an almost full Garden full of people who were there to see "rock God", she said that, Neil Young. Crowd reaction was mixed at best. No one really pays attention to opening acts at places like MSG. She stuck it out and put in a decent set and kept her mood up, not that I could really tell because I was so far away, and my seats weren't that bad. Her music just loses a lot in such a cavernous atmosphere where all you can see of her from your seat in section 124 is some blonde hair and, let's be honest, a big chest. Well, my disgust at Jewel's growing popularity in other posts is well documented. I digress. Here's the setlist with a few comments, note there are very few intervals in betweensongs or stories, again, due to the unfit venue. Summertime-Only song in the set I'd never heard live before. Got a good reaction actually. Even sounds a bit like Janis Joplin when she does it. Deep Water-Early in the set for this song. Predicated by saying this was her first time at MSG and a thanks to the music fans who allow her to do something she loves for a living. Little Sister-Weak performance, drowned in MSG. Satellite-"this is about California" then into the song. OK I guess. You Were Meant For Me-Another weak selection. Don't like the song much anyway but the Tradewinds version was much better. Got a mediocre reaction at best, hopefully it does just as poorly as the next single. Sometimes it be That Way-Third song with band, never heard it this way before, original is much better. Here she has to sing over the instrumentation, she cut out the three bears verse and replaced Jewel in the second line with Sweetheart. Her self-reference and its correlation to Juliet used to be my favorite part of this song. Fading Away-Not bad, abridged Kmart bathroom story. Love Me Just Leave Me Alone-Best song in the set. Carnivore-Lackluster compared to other versions I have heard. Who Will Save Your Soul-Inevitable. A lot the beach house version except with a backing band. Put something extra into the delivery of the last verse. Not bad considering how played out it is. Chime Bells-Got a good response. It can be construed as selling out but hey, ut's New York, give 'em something to remember you by. Extended pause after the faster? part. Much less physical convulsing and slower yodelling though. Hey, I was there to see Neil, he rocked, except for the shitty encore choices and no Southern Man, Down by the River, or Rockin' in the Free World. Jewel showed something, at least she wasn't intimidated. Afghan Whigs were decent but their last song, "Faded", was awesome. And yeah, you gotta love that cello. For those of you that were at Friendly's for my "hey, what's that noise game" know that my breaks were making, um, interesting noises. So, I decided to go to the Mobil station across the street and take a look. Well, My mechanical abilities blossomed and I ended up with break fluid everywhere. Luckily, I belong to the ranks of AAA members. AAA informs me that they can tow me but, this being Sunday, nobody can work on my car. So, we (Anthony (Brooklyn) Renee, and I) get in the tow truck and head to the garage. While we are there we befriend a very nice women who let us use the phone and yellow pages to explore our options. Needless to say, we end up getting a hotel in Seabrook, NH. Now, I found this interesting... This hotel, which was not far from Hampton beach, was gorgeous! We had a kitchenette, two TV's, sofa-bed...for the SAME PRICE as the Oceancreast, which was, well, less luxurious. Anyway, the car got fixed at about 10am Monday morning. We all hop in I still make it in time to see the MSG show (see next post) and Renee makes (presumably) her Rage Against the Machine Show. Of course, I never did run into the people I was supposed to meet, but.... Well, I hope every learns from my mistakes. Sorry this was so long. I saw them really start to warm up to her as the set went on. A lot of them really seem to like Chime Bells, which got her a bigger cheer than I think Afghan Wigs got for ANY of there songs. Sorry to disagree with some people, but I think she translates nicely to bigger venues. And that hurts to say, b/c I really hate to lose her to the rest of the world. BTW, after the set Marc Schulman came into the crowd and sat two sections away from me. I went over to say 'Hi' and to generally pour over his guitar playing. Unfortunately, he said he's only w/Jewel 'til the end of the Neil Young gig, (which is the end of the month (?)) then they split up. But, he was very receptive and didn't seem to find it strange when I told him I've seen him in Woodstock, NH and NYC. But, just thought I'd "chime" in. I know that the original request was for a female's opinion, but I just thought i would add mine too. I think flowers are GREAT!! It doesn't even have to be for girls only either... guys like them too. There are just some rules about them that most be adhered to: 1. Flowers should express how you feel, and that requires making an original arrangement. This is quite hard to do, but when done right will usually impress anyone. 2. Flowers should not be given as a present for an occasion. They're really touching if given spontanously, for no apparent reason. If it is substituted for a present for a special occasion... It usually means that you are really couldn't care since you didn't spend the time to think of something original yourself. IT"S THE BIG CO (cop out)!!!! The only exception to this would be a special flower that she loves... AND then only sparingly used. 3. Guys like to get them too. I know that flowers are typically suppose to be for just girls, and guys prefer a subscription to the beer-of-the-month. Let's get real for a second.... if it came from the heart and from you, that someone special, shouldn't that be enough???? These are just my views on the flower issue. Jewel rocked with the band out there for the majority of the set. She played electric herself on "Run, Tonto, Run" and something else ("Love Me?"). The crowd was a little annoying, but my first Jewel show was the Paradise show which had a terrible crowd. However, Dennis had a good point (fightening, huh?) the Jewel concert became secondary. Meeting all of the EDA's was really great for me. I was so busy with my shirts at JS I didn't really get to hang out with anyone. This time I had a blast meeting everyone, hanging out at the beach, and going to breakfast the next morning. Honestly, I had a BETTER time than at JS, and that was because of the EDA's not Jewel (although meeting her was nice, too). We are really lucking up here in the Northeast because the cities and a lot of EDA's are close together. I hope people in the rest of the country (esp. the West Coast where there are a lot of EDA's can pull off a similiar gathering. In addition to my careers in physics, design, and broacasting. I coach high school sports (Track and Football to be exact). So here the story. A couple of days before JS, I ran into one of my football player's parents at a local store. I was very excited about JS at this time so I shared the story with them. Last week, I saw them again and they asked me about the show and told them it was great, I got to meet Jewel, talk to her, etc. I also mentioned that I was going to see her on Saturday (at the Hampton Beach show). Anyway, I get to the school today for the first team meeting and not thinking anything of it I am wearing my Jewel Cowgirl Shirt (I had also brought some pictures of Jewel and me to show the other coaches). Well, the rumor going around the school for the last week (I do a lot of volunteer work there so I know most of the kids not just my players) was that Jewel and I were an item and I was with her on tour. The fact that I walked in the door this morning wearing a Jewel shirt and holding a bunch of pictures Jewel and Lenedra with me didn't help. After enjoying it for a few minutes, I dispelled the rumor. Although, I did get a good laugh over it. Just goes to show you what happens when news is spread by word of mouth.
