I am waiting impatiently 'til the 29th!!!!! Sarah, Shelly and I went and saw The Cranberries last night, they were ok but not spectacular. Every time Delores would begin to talk I would just start to laugh...Sarah kept looking at me like I was stupid. Well anyway to the point of my post... While we were in the car driving through Detroit on I-75...I was begging for my sister to drive across the border into Canada for the heck of it...oops sorry wrong story...anyway...Shelly told us this cute/funny Jewel story that I just have to share. Shelly just came back from LA visiting her best friend and her other friend who is playing Pro Rollerblade hockey out there...the hockey player's name is Sean Penn...different one but sort of funny, eh?? Well...Sean also plays pro ice hockey for the Toledo Storm which is a minor league team here(Shelly used to work for the Storm). Shelly was telling Sean about JewelStock and he was like Jewel? the singer? from Alaska? Shelly told him yes. It seems that one of his teammates on the Storm grew up in Alaska. I guess he knew Jewel and she asked him out a couple times and every time he said no. She kept telling this dude that she was a singer and he just didn't care. After she asked him out and he rejected her he was like...just watch she'll be famous someday. One day he got home and turned on MTV and there was Jewel. Ok...now wasn't that a funny weird story??? I just had to share it with you...BTW the hockey player that Jewel asked out is very cute!!! I guess she just has good taste!!!!! :-)))) Have a nice day!!!!! -Liz ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Girls rule/ boys drool...over Jewel! Please excuse if you get a double post. This is going to the list and the underground. Fun, fun, fun in the NH sun! That line is about as corny as the venue and the hotel we all stayed at. But HEY! We were all together and that is all that counts. This will be quick post just to highlight the evening (hopefully!) Someone else will have to tell you pre-5:00pm stories as Tammy and I got stuck in traffic. We arrived just in time to meet up with everyone to start walking to the venue. There is an empty chair next to Dennis (gosh, I wonder why??) Dennis puts a cup there and we make it a memorial and tribute to all the angels who couldn't attend. So you guys were all there in our spirits and minds. On with the show. Opening Act: Eleanor ROCKED!!! Set list... (I don't know her stuff so these are my own names) Two unknown songs whispered prayer Fire over there - she pulls out a viola and absolutely blows the top of the venue, it was awesome. Leave her now Spare me those lies - she moves to the piano Precious Little (At this point Jewel had come out to listen to her set, but people kept bothering her so she went back in.) Very Big hole (or as Dennis and I said the La Da Da Da song) Who is following me Jewel starts at an amazing 10:20pm, only a mere 5 mins late!!! For the fashion report she was wearing a black summer top, with blue striped dress pants. Her set list was: Summertime Don't Little Sister Morning Song Cold Song Racecar Driver YWMFM - introed with the Steve P/Jewel in Mexican drug bust story The band comes out at this point... Satellite Fading Away Fragile Heart Jewel picks up her electric guitar Run Tonto Run Love me just leave alone Sometimes it be that way At this point the crowd is really drunk, especially the people next to our table. One loud mouth asshole keeps shouting his undying love for Jewel between every song, and during some. Dennis ends up throwing a balloon at him. Jewel is getting interrupted with gifts of flowers etc. Gray Matter Foolish Games We are now at the one hour mark. Fragile Flame (with me crying as usual) POY - with a great break and crowd sing along during the faggot part Deep Water Chime bells Encore: WWSYS Show ends at 11:45 Other items about the show that are quite notable. (a) Phil gets backstage pass for the intermission and instantly becomes our hero, at the same time Dennis is banned from within 100 feet of the bus. (b)Overall for a Jewel show I rate this a C+, but don't mistake my appreciation for Jewel, because for concerts in general it was still a A-/B+. (c) Everyone made the concert fun, I would list you by names, but I don't want to forget everyone. Really it was a great time!! (d) There was at least three recordings made of the show. We heard one that night at the aftershow party and it was great. I will let the people who made the recordings come forward if they want them treed, so don't write me and ask for their names (i.e. I ain't telling). The aftershow party was a lot of fun. About 20-25 of us on the second story balcony just getting to know each other better. Selena was the first to crash, because Crystal was tired too. After she left I noticed she left the key to the van on the table, so I pick it up and hand it to who? Eric the crashboy, nobody was letting me live that one down for a while. Everyone stayed for quite a while, the party started to really break up around 2:30am. The last survivors left about 3:30-3:45pm. In the end it was only Phil and me. I went to go to bed, only to have that insomniac manic Dennis get me back outside. We both finally called it a night at 4:15-4:30ish I think. It was quite a undertaking for us all to get up at 9:00am this morning to meet for breakfast, only to find that no restaurant was exactly happy to serve 22 angels. Tammy and I had to go so we, gave everyone our best and headed home. So there you have it.... that wasn't too long now was it? I just got back from NH and haven't read my e-mail yet, so parden any overlaps. Here are highlights from the extraordinary weekend! Rode up in Selena's PARTEE van! Blue, of course, with lots of blue ribbons. It was five hours from my place and she had already driven 5 hours before she got to me. She is indeed a goddess arriving in NH after 10 hours behind the wheel as fresh as a daisy. My other riding partners were Rich Melko, Eric (Trashboy) Montas, and Selena's adorable daughter Krystal. A great group! Next was volleyball on the beach for a few hours and icy swimming for SOME. Then the surprise burial of Selena. Horseshoes. (Horseshoes, Dennis?) Camping in line for a couple of hours and then a couple more hours inside the club before the show. The opening act was pretty good (I keep forgetting her name). Jewel, of course was awesome, but I'll let someone with a better memory than mine tell all about it. Party afterwards at the Oceancrest :-) and breakfast the next morning at Friendly's. Home again. Eric has a new hairstyle :-). Some thank you's go out to Selena for driving (and driving and driving), Krystal for being a great backseat companion, Mike for taking charge of the breakfast "fiasco (!)" not to mention the bill :-), no he really did, Akira for giving up his "luxury suite" for the five of us, and everyone for giving me the chance to get to know you wonderful people so much better and for putting up with my belly-aching (pun definitely intended) - especially Dennis. Conversation in the partee van: Amy, from the backseat: "what?" Amy, from the backseat: "What?" Amy, from the backseat: "WHAT?" Krystal: "Trashboy, can you throw this away?" Krystal: "Trashboy, can you throw this away?" Krystal: "Trashboy, can you throw this away?" Amy: "Oops, I spilled my Dr. Pepper in the side compartment. Good thing it's not our van". The venue was the Casino ballroom at Hampton Beach in New Hampshire and it was large (1800 people) yet very crowded and uncomfortable. I waited in line from 4:30 until doors opened at 7, and waited until 9 when Eleanor went on. Luckily, I had the company of almost 40 other Jewel list members (EDAs or everyday angels as we call each other) so I wasn't too bored:) Eleanor came on at 9 and played a little less than an hour. For those who have heard her first album, be very surprised. I was. I just bought the new album friday and only had a chance to listen to it twice (the second time driving to the show) but did notice the move towards a more rocking band sound. I wasn't prepared for how loud and electric she and her band was. In some places, the band overwhelmed her, but she did do a fine job on electric and electric/acoustic guitars as well as wonderful work on the violin (she is classically trained and played with the National Symphony Orchestra of Irelandfor four years) and the keyboards. She only played one song from her first album (Leave her Now and getting all the violin parts down pat). She was great and I say get her albums and see her live, especially if you like celtic-flavored pop/folk (actually kinda like Susan McKeown). I hope you people at Riverfest in New York are having fun seeing these two today:) After her set, I went over to the open backstage door next to the stage and asked the security guy if I could get Eleanor to sign my cd sleeve. He waffled and said maybe. Then a guy carrying a guitar (I think) walked by us to the door, saw that I had the cd, and asked if I was Paul Kim. I said yes (in a very surprised manner of course) and he said that his girlfriend does the email stuff for eleanor (i had written to them from the website friday night to express my glee over eleanor's opening for jewel and had asked about getting her to play Amherst) and had told him about my message:) So he took me backstage to meet Eleanor and he introduced me to her ("Eleanor, this is Paul Kim") and I talked a little and got her to sign my cd sleeve, and of course did not say anything that resembled an intelligent phrase as I always do. Jewel came on about 10:20 and performed: Summertime (from Porgy and Bess?) with bass player Zed solo Don't Little Sister Morning Song Cold Song Racecar Driver You Were Meant for Me band was brought out Satellite Fading Away Fragile Heart Run Tonto Run Love Me Just Leave Me Alone Sometimes it Be That Way Grey Matter Foolish Games Never Trust Your Pink Fleshy Heart to a Carnivore solo Fragile Flame Pieces of You Deep Water Chime Bells (yodeling piece) encore The big hit song that nearly everyone knows by now The set without the encore lasted about an hour and fifteen minutes. It was the general concensus of the EDAs that all of the band songs will be on the new album. We're probably wrong:P A couple notes on the concert: THe crowd was very loud especially during Eleanor's set. Part of the din was from peole cheering very loudly at solos and such, but much was from people just talking very loudly:( When Jewel played, people kept hooting and hollering and screaming and generally being drunken annoyances. I guess I've been spoiled with the more courteous yet more zealous and appreciative audiences at the concerts I've been attending this summer, especially Jewelstock. I think that this was as bad as the Jewel show I saw in May in Boston at a club called the Paradise (which it was not). During Fragile Flame, a beautiful solo song about a friend of Jewel's who committed suicide, the people at the table next to mine were talking very loudly and wouldn't shut up >:{ And people kept getting up and walking around during songs and even left while she played. I don't know how respectful audiences are for Happy in general, but i do know that the Sarah concerts I've been to and heard from boots, that the audience generally likes to scream at the beginning (in recognition of the song) and end of a song. There are the few people who scream during a song (especially Ice Cream) or holler "we love you Sarah!" (yeah I did that, too:)), but most of the time the crowd is very attentive and courteous and the few bursts of exuberance are understandable (except for that annoying 'you go girl' one can hear on a particular boot several times). It's not exactly fair to compare a Sarah concert in a nice theater where there isn't alcohol to a Jewel concert in a large club/bar that serves alcohol liberally, but why can't the audience be more courteous and not so damned !@#!^&@*-ish? Jewel rocked! She wasn't as audience friendly. She snipped around the marijuana story, cut out other stories, and for chime bells (which was oddly placed at the end of the set and not the encore) she cut out the second verse and went straight throught the yodelling faster and faster without stopping. She definitely did not look "into" it. But she still rocked and even played electric guitar on two songs! That's about it for my memory. I'm sure other things will pop up and I'll post em to the Jewel list (don't worry fumblers and ecotphiles, you won't hear my bitches and moans about this again). And Rob, you missed Carnivore between Foolish Games and Fragile Flame (which also made my eyes moist. I love the part where she sings "...melt my skin like ice; or shed my skin, and be pure wind..." Gah, that's so wondermous. Dennis, update the websites now! So your from Taunton, huh? Kinda like Tauntaun? But not. I guess I could tell everyone how Kyle and I went to the Casino at 4:30, surprised to find a line of 20 people in front of us. How we sat down on the steps/curb to anchor and EDA spot in the line. How Slowly but surely EDA's showed up and how a line formed behind us and when most of the EDA's showed up and stood in line with us, one of the guys behind us complained to the security that the later EDA's were cutting in line and so they had to go back maybe 15 people in line, but we all still got pretty good seats. And how Little Rich and Dennis and I played a game of full contact horseshoes where they both tackled me even though I was on Dennis' championship team. needless to say, I bit him and transferred my rabies to him. But as for the rest of you... NH was a GREAT time! The short version Akira please... Certainly [ said I]: Everyone showed up at about noon. Mo Connell was there to great everyone with one of his hand shakes.... though the had disappeared rather quickly when I needed help carrying my stuff to my room. Once we checked in... We went to the beach across the street of the motel. We spent about 4 hours there, entertaining ourselves like normal people do. Let's see. ... We got together a volleyball game (thanks to Selena's quick thinking in bringing a net and ball), got a game of horseshoes going (and partial game of full contact horseshoes, with Harris the only one getting injuried... but it is a manly scratch),and ambushed and buried Selena in the sand (thanks to Krystal, Selena's daughter, for organizing and helping to carry it out... look out Akira...I think K will organize the next jewelstock meeting and you'll be out of a job). Afterwards we showered, went to the concert (for some not in this order) and heard Jewel. the concert in itself, was okay. To me, it didn't seem like Jewel really had her full heart in the whole thing. Alot of people were talking and moving around so that it was to the point where A couple of angels almost "fell from grace". But I guess any concert unlike JS for those who attended will be just "eh" for now. Not that I'm saying it wasn't GREAT... she played a couple of her new songs, and a few old ones. She wasn't around after the concert... which bummed but understandable. There was a crowd of people waiting for her after the concert. Then we all went back to the OC and sat on the second floor deck and partied. It was mellow and there were plenty of "refreshments" to go around. People just sat and talked about everything... I know that I heard conversations about Jewel, Life in general, bootleg tapes, etc.. It was just a cool night. Well I'm heading to bed. Got a full day of classes, and work for manana. I can't wait 'til next time. - -- Jason Shaw o ( <|- } >>>--> >>>--> >>>--> jshaw@bcn.net / \( ------------------------------ From: FVVM98B@prodigy.com ( SUPERDEFORMED ANGEL) Date: Sun, 18 Aug 1996 23:15:33, -0500 Subject: StL and PBFGaB Okay, here's the situation for anybody who is interested in either or both of these promos.
