It's the Sept issue with Noah Wylie on the cover. In the Music news, reviews and comics section on page 249. My So-Called Life Childhoods of the stars. This month: Jewel "I grew up in Alaska. I've been performing live since I was six years old, and in barrooms since I was eight. I was very driven. We toured Eskimo villages and I yodeled - it was just a novelty thing. People have always loved yodeling." There's also a small picture. It's the same one that was in TV guide for the Conan article about him breaking new bands. Jeff "I recognize myself in every stranger's eyes." ------------------------------ From: "Akira" Date: Tue, 6 Aug 1996 21:42:53 -0400 Subject: okay listen up EDA... I know that everyone is really upset about the whole MJB, some more effected than others. I understand that someone has destroyed the sanctity of our list and really shook (anger or anxiety) some people really badly. But I have to remind everyone what we always talk about on this list, tolerance. Now I know 'why the hell is Akira defending MJB? What is doing, white out again??'. I'm not defending him, in fact I was one of the first indiviuals to take up the war flag against this guy. In fact I even wrote a special 'welcome to the list' program, that would have made all of you proud. Some might have even cried at the beauty of this program I know I did. But hate him as I do, I, myself, would say leave him alone. We have posted to him that we know who he is, and also, I think, Notified the proper authorities. I think that is all that should be done to him/her right now. If this persists however, then we can do something 'extra'. But the problem is just that he's an **** ******* ****** jerk who gets his kicks out of pissing people off. He's not doing any real damage to the list, or to anyone on the list, except a charile horse in my delete finger. If there's anything that I've learned from Jewel is that life ain't nice at times. So what're you going to do? Just buckle down and move on. You can't fight everyone because there's just always going to be someone better than you. So all you can do is wait, watch, and be nice. That is until it ain't time to be nice,.... and then you f-ck them good, hard, fast, and destroy them completely. But I don't see that here... so let's be nice. I would love to hear your opinions on this subject, but in respect to everyone, unless its something the list should hear, email me privately. I take pro/con to my opinion, and maybe you're right. Akira ------------------------------ From: Harrisbros@aol.com Date: Tue, 6 Aug 1996 21:56:38 -0400 Subject: NJC: Not her weight, her poor attitude... ***Selena began a thread on Stevie Nicks: I saw Stevie play in Austin back in 1984 or so. A guy in my office ranted about her being in town, so I dropped by the venue just two hours before the show, and lucked out when two tickets in the "golden circle" near the stage opened up. The other guy, who got the best mid section seats available a month before, wouldn't speak to me for weeks! My point is that Stevie has a beautiful, deep voice and produced great music both with Fleetwood Mac and solo. She may have gained weight and lost some of her voice, but I think a lot of her current difficulties stem from the fact that she was a pain in the *ss to get along with. I've heard many stories, and even Tom Petty wouldn't work with her again, even after the successful duet "Leather and Lace." Can you imagine what it would take to piss off Tom Petty (Mr. Laid Back himself?). BTW, Tom Petty has many excellent albums and is a grossly UNDER APPRECIATED artist (IMHO). Regardless, Stevie Nicks has some excellent tunes. Heart has some nice stuff too. Too bad women are held to higher physical standards than men. Comes from a shallow society. If it applied to men as well, Elvis would have never had his comeback career! - -- Dennis ------------------------------ From: PAUL KYUSAM KIM Date: Tue, 06 Aug 1996 22:07:05 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Re: NJC: Promo CD w/ Melissa Ferrick about Melissa Ferrick (also known as the Other Melissa): She was dropped by Atlantic Records at the beginning of this year (bastards, oh wait, they carry Jewel, never mind:)) and has recently released an EP on cassette. Check out her websites for more info. She had two albums released by Atlantic before she was dropped. Oddly enough, she wrote a song about how Atlantic Records favored Juliana Hatfield and devoted a lot of promotional time to her, but she herself got jack squat. I think it was called the Juliana Hatfield song. Anyways, it would be ironic if Juliana wrote a similar song about Jewel:) This is not an attack on JH. I like her too. So check out Melissa Ferrick. Live too. Paul Kim with no middle name this time ------------------------------ From: Harrisbros@aol.com Date: Tue, 6 Aug 1996 22:18:08 -0400 Subject: Stevie Nicks correction! You guys are TOO good (and fast). I have already been informed that Stevie sang "Stop Dragging My Heart Around" with Tom Petty. And I have been told she is doing more duets with Tom Petty (he must've forgiven her). Don Henley did "Leather and Lace" with Stevie, so she must have torqued him off as well. (My memory has its ups and downs.) It was also pointed out to me that the drugs she did back then were probably detrimental to her attitude. I agree, they usually are. Other than a few facts screwed up, I stand by my previous post (just a little further back this time). - -- Dennis ------------------------------ From: Harrisbros@aol.com Date: Tue, 6 Aug 1996 22:18:55 -0400 Subject: JewelStock: The Sequels ***After several good attempts by listers to latch onto JewelStockmania, Akira responded: >sorry but there can only be one Jewelstock (at least first edition) and that was @Bearsville BABY!< Amen, Akira. And any other JewelStock would have to be held in Woodstock and appended with a Roman Numeral (kinda like the Super Bowl, but with less beer!). However, "JewelStock: Night 3" will be held in New Hampshire at the Casino Club August 17th. This is made possible as we have almost all of the original organizers attending (c'mon Dan), our beauty queen has now announced attendance, Fuzzy says he'll run away from Robb for the weekend (or we'll get another cheap purple bear stand-in), and we're planning on doing all the things we forgot to do the first two nights!
