I think it's a very interesting topic. I remember when I was surfing through the Alanis Morissette newsgroup for info on her tour, etc., (yeah, I like Alanis, what can I say? Nobody's perfect) and found about two dozen threads with the subject "Alanis and her beautiful breasts". That was the most popular subject for Alanis fans. That kind of made me think. First of all, let me just say that I find Jewel extremely attractive, but I would never say "she sings beutifully too", I would say "she's attractive too". In my opinion, although I do think she could make a living of modeling or something like that, her singing and especially her song writing is what makes me read this list everyday. I don't get offended by people that watch her video just to watch her and drool. Hey, not everyone likes the kind of music that Jewel plays, but most guys DO like the way she looks, it's not a bad thing - it's human. I DO, however, get offended by people pointing that out as what Jewel is. "She's hot", or "She's got a great body" as their first response to my question "Do you like Jewel?" really bums me out because beauty is a gift you're born with. You either have it or not. You can fake beauty but it always shows through. The real beauty that Jewel has is the beauty that she brings to all of us. I remember the first time I heard "Adrian" or "Painters". Eventhough I had never seen Jewel at the time (not even the CD cover since I borrowed my friends tape - he lost the cover) I thought she was beautiful. Is this too corny? I guess what I'm trying to say is that there are many people in the world born with beauty. There are very few people in the world that use their true beauty like song and poetry to make others feel their beauty - even if it is only for 3-4 minutes. Hope that made sense. Sorry for being sappy and corny. - SkinnyPete P.S. My first meeting with Jewel was her video (WWSYS) and I went (in my best Butthead) "Uh, huh, huh...hey baby..." and left it at that. I was blessed again some time later (I don't watch much TV, more of a movie guy) and listened to the words and went (in my best Harvard voice) "My, she does write on interesting and compelling subjects!" Then Alta Vista showed me the road to true redemption, Aaron's web page (I think). Not that the other pages weren't good, but it was the first I came to. And again, I went "Damn, she's FINE!" And I caught myself because I'm never one to leer and oogle the ladys, much less voice my opinion on it, but the more I looked at her face (i don't remember much of anything else) the more I was entranced. Anyway, then I got PoY, and I started to LISTEN. That hooked me. Then I went back, read the FAQ, and said to myself (I talk too much to myself, I know) "WOW, I wanna be like her when I grow up." Then I realized I can't, I'm already grown (physically) and I'm a guy. Trying to be like her could get expensive. I now find myself driving, listening to Radio Angels in my car, closing my eyes (not recommended), trying to see her facial expressions as she sings. I don't know, I guess what I'm trying to say is that her physical facial beauty is a part of my love for her, but it goes way beyond that. I agree, the "hey, nice ass" or "gettaload of those jugs!" is appaling and piggish, and I promise to stomp really, really hard on the next person's foot who I hear say that (if I know they're not just saying that so I can stomp on their foot). At JS, I wanted to get a look at the chords and notes she was playing, which is stupid, b/c I don't play (well), but all I could do is stare at her, singing. I shed a couple 'o tears during Nikos (just try to focus a camera during that) not only because of the words, but because of the expressions she had while she sang. I don't know if I'm gonna get flamed or pity or arrested (I swear, I didn't do it ;) so I'll get back to my work now, thank you, and goodnight. If it makes anyone feel better, I also think Eddie Vedder is a beautiful man, for the same reasons, the way his face moves when he sings. This could be done individually (you send me a list of artists and I'll tell which ones would be new to me so the tape includes only artists I don't have) or make one tape and copy it to trade with several people. Which is best would depend on how many people actually are willing and able to put the work into making the tape to trade. For those concerned about wronging artists by copying their work: Yes, technically this is copying but as a result of the EP exchange I bought four CD's that I otherwise would not have seen. In other words, if you like it on first listen, you'll like it--but it's not one that the more you listen to the more it grows on you. Izabecca Pidgeon sounds like Rebecca Pigeon, whose album The Raven is excellent. For some reason its commonly filed under Jazz, though it's a very folky, acoustic album. Pidgeon by the way, is playright David Mamet's wife, and also has done soundtrack work. Not sure if this is the Izabecca Pidgeon you're talking about, but thought she worth recommending anyway. Personally I don't see the connection between Alanis and Dar William's voices, but that's just my opinion. Dar's voice is quite incredible live--I was surprised how pure and clear her voice can be--as she often half talks/sings her way through many of her album tracks. If you ever get to see a chance to see her live, do it. She puts on a great show and has an incredible personality. I don't condsider it cashing in on her part. Rather, I think she has gained her fame in spite of her sexual attitude. ME struggled for a long time and was constantly pushed aside because of her open attitude. (This may be where the fatigue came from.) Recently, as lesbianism and female bi-sexuality became "vogue", she did begin to gain widespread recognition. She was around a long time before that though. Her music has always been about her experiences, which have a lesbian paradym. If 'fans' can't accept that, then they aren't really fans. Melissa is involved with a large number of civil rights and envir- onmental organizations, and uses her new influence to aid those causes.
