But if Alanis wins, especially >if she wins both, that's it the cable line will be cut that night, Okay, I gotta put in my piece for Alanis here. I consider her to be a peer of Jewel's in their mutual abilities to express great emotion and offer a glance at their souls through their music (that, and the fact that they were born about 10 days apart). She wasn't the alterna-grrl poster child when her album first came out, and like Jewel, her album was released for the sake of the music, not for commercial value. This is something I highly respect from both artists, and as far as commercialization of their music goes, if it weren't for that, I would never have picked up POY (which would have been a tragedy). Alanis is now as mainstream as Hootie, but she deserves much credit for what she accomplished as musically before the world "tuned in" to her (and no, I'm not talking about her earlier Paula Abdul-lite albums). BTW, as big an Alanis fan as I am, I still thought it was quite funny when Jewel poked a little fun by relating "Ironic" to her drug bust experience in Mexico (?). ;) volt "One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, FLOOR!!!" ------------------------------ From: volt-o-meal Date: Wed, 31 Jul 1996 21:03:17 -0700 Subject: Re: Olympic ramblings-NJC At 11:34 AM 7/31/96 -0400, JEWELFAN22@aol.com wrote: >Okay Angels here are my Olympic ramblings: > AHHHHHH......Olympic announcers are so idiotic!!!!! That means I'll get more mail from people thinking I'm an international spy... Which I never am quite sure is flattering or offensive... This is all beside the point rambling. (I'm channeling Dennis. Or is that Dean? Are we sure that they have distinct minds?) What I am writing about is the fact that I was watching Politically Incorrect tonight and they were talking about happiness and fame. Jann Arden was on and she was saying how she was 34 and had been in the business 20 years, but that she worries about overnight success stories like Alanis Morisette and Jewel... Now, I don't like Alanis but she was a star in Canada for a good amount of years before comng here and even if she wasn't, so? I still don't see how you could put her with Jewel. Alanis has gone like triple platinum and Jewel just made gold... Can you see Jewel as the troubled rock star swiging a beer and yeeling for a towel down? Come on... I can just see it now: Jewel sitting and demanding someone to dial the phone for her so she can throw around her weight to get into Spago... What do you think Harris brothers? Can you picture a scene much like this? Or would you like to go out on your own with a whole new image? Thought of the day: As years go on society seems to deny a greater amount of what goes on while, at the same time, they claim to see progress Peace, cj ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V1 #436 ***************************
