Hello all.... Just thought I would pass this on. I recieved a newsletter from a compact disk service called "Acoustic Sounds". They deal in primarily "audiophile" recordings. That means recordings that sound "real", "live", or just "great". In the most current flyer 5.4 dated August 1996, this appeared under the Atlantic section..... Jewel/Pieces Of You Jewel Kilcher was raised on an Alaskan homestead, and carries with her a Tupperware container filled with soil to remind her of that place. Having moved to the lower 48, finally landing in San Diego, she's focused her talent and energy on surfing and songwriting while making a meager living performing at the Innerchange Coffeehouse. Now comes her first albumn, and with it the chance to be heard by a much larger audience, and what they here will be statements like: "What we call human nature in actuality is human habit." Pieces Of You, finds Jewel reaching out to make a personal connection-unfiltered and immediate. The live Innerchange sessions finds it strength in a vital simplicity that lavish studio arrangements would only interfere with. Her songs possess stark honesty, soul-barring introspection, and keen insights into those she's loved and been hurt by-all balanced out by an ability to absorb life's realities and tell a story that somehow makes sense of it all. Great review IMHO, and dead accurate on the sound quality..... Stupidity like water finds it's own level........ I would guess that this has something to do with variations in the speed of the tape causing minor pitch variations and tape heads not being sensitive enough at high speeds to pick up all the subtleties (sp?). Send me an email with the subject "T-Shirt Order" in it give me your name, address, and the number/sizes of shirts that you would like (all sizes will be availible from s-xxxl). It significantly reduces frequency response ability of the blank you are recording on. It also does not allow any form of noise reduction(Dolby) to function properly. For folks new to dubbing, all this means basically, is that high speed dubbing will make the copy sound "thin" and "full of hiss" compared to the original. I'm not fond of dubbing decks in general but there's no doubt that EVERY dubbing deck functions BETTER at normal speed. High speed dubbing is a time saver, but only at the detriment of the copy you are making.
