We have all heard the stories of how she reacted to hearing her songs on the radio for the first time so I can only imagine whats going on. I can see it now: Jewel in a stunning old Hollywood style silver dress, pulling up to the front of the eMpTVy (which will gain new respect from me if they treat her good) Awards Show on the back of her bo's shiny yellow BMW, him in an absolutly black sharp tuxedo, both with matching helmits (and some magical LA stylist has made the perfect hair styles that are not messed up by this for both of them, no frizz). They get off and walk in amid flash bulbs and red carpet. Then at the anouncment of best new artist, Jewel, she stands up quickly, gives Micheal a sweet quick kiss, and with child-like grace and joy quickly walks up to the stage to recieve her award from some two-bit actor that eMpTVy always seems to hire for these things, gets incredibly embarassed, tells the crowd to stop cheering (their all on their feet by now). The camera cuts to a quick close up of Lenedra wiping away a tear of joy for her lovely child. After thanking her studio band, her producer, the record company and lastly her mother Jewel walks over, picking up big blue on the way and heads over to the performance stage. Over there is both the studio band for the next album and the 3D band. They kick into an extended version of Carnivore with Mark ripping out an amazing solo, the organ getting real funky and Dr Teeth at the same time, with Jewel's vocals floating out on the air waves (with a really neat echoing effect caused by the auditorium). All the west coast EDAs are there plus a bunch of die hards, all with multicolored Gratful Dead Bears in their arms, and then in the midst of all this magic Fuzzy, the godfather of all the other bears, sits up and starts to clap. Wonder beyond wonder has somehow caused this little ball of polyester to come to life. After all has died down and its on to the next announcer, little Fuzzy barely noticable, is still there continuing the standing ovation, his furry paws barely making any noise. Ahhhhh time for bed. Our aspiring Jewel Newsletter editor is indeed one of the EDAs who has been here for a while, it sounds like the project would be done in good spirit for the benefit of all of us. The author didn't tell me about wanting to remain anonymous. Some may say that the publisher of this sort of thing should be accountable for what is printed and should therefore go by name. I suppose that's up to Jewel/Lenedra/Hiranya and/or general concensus from the list. What happened to the newsletter that was proposed close to a year ago? I dug back and have found it was Geoff Warder who took down the postal addresses of the people on the list for that purpose. Does anyone know what happened to Geoff, his list of our addresses and plans for the original newsletter? What kind of recorder, >microphone, etc? I'm sure there are knowledgable sources out there, and >if we get more tapes they can be tree'd. What precautions re: security >patdown? How do they react if they catch you? Looking to tape Jewel/Dylan. Most people use a Walkman-type recorder. Use a good quality tape. Walkmans are biased for normal, not high bias tape, but the machines don't have very good or flat frequency response to begin with, so I find a high-bias tape compensates for that and produces better results. Maxell XLII, TDK SA, Sony UX, etc. are good choices. Don't use metal-bias tape. Try to have an unobstructed path between you and the P.A. speaker, and point the microphone directly at a speaker, not necessarily the stage. The closer you are to the speaker, the better. I park myself directly in front of a speaker stack whenever possible, 6 feet away is great. At that distance you should aim the recorder high so it picks up the sound from the tweeters on top of the stack. Some recorders overload at such close range, but that's less of a problem with Jewel's acoustic style. All you can do is experiment. Use your best creativity to get the unit into the building. If they catch you at the door, you can try to tell them you hope to interview the artist after the show for your school newspaper or something. Once you're in, you probably won't have a problem, just be discrete. I got nabbed once, when a record rep spotted the LED Record light on my machine. I now cover that with a piece of electrical tape. Use new alkaline batteries if it's an important show. Make sure the tape is loaded in the right direction. Make sure your pause button is off when you start to record. Do a quick test before you go into the show. Wear a watch, and note the start time so you know when to flip the tape. Try to bring a 2nd tape in case the show runs long. These things all sound simplistic, but you'd be surprised how easy it is to screw one of them up. If you're shopping for an appropriate recorder, I like the quality of Aiwa. The Sonys I've seen overload easily. I've actually seen good results from a Radio Shack stereo unit. Radio Shack's stuff is inconsistent though, but they have a good return policy, so you can buy it and try it, and return it if it doesn't work out. If you're looking for pro quality, there are MiniDisc and DAT recorders on the market for $500+ that will give killer quality. Don't go for the microcassette machines, the quality sucks. An external mic is a nice option, but the built-in mic will usually do fine too. I use a stereo recorder. This isn't all that necessary since the sound at live shows is mixed in mono to begin with, but it can produce a better recording because the room reverberation and audience gets picked up in stereo, which recreates the scene a little better. Mic aiming becomes very critical if you're using a stereo recorder though. Hope that helps. If anyone wants to incorporate this into a FAQ, be my quest.
