I have been a list member for a while now, and in fact was in attendance at JewelStock. 2. I am totally not looking to make any money off this project. Not a dime! Those who I have discussed launching this publication hopefully will attest that this is truly a labor of love for me. 3. I wish to remain totally anonymous as editor and publisher. That's why I came up with this lame screen name. I don't want.... a) praise for this, b) grief for this or c) an endless parade of people asking me weird questions like if I access to Jewel. (which I don't and don't know if this project will go any further.) 4. I have written to Hiranya to get further permission, and I discussed in brief e-mail the project with Dan Stark. [please don't tell anyone who I am Dan : ) ]I was told my next step should be to post on the list to see what the status is of any "EXISTING" publications. Again, I am just not wanting to step on any toes here. 5. I have some pretty good credentials coming into this. During the day, I am editor for a successful business to business newsletter publisher, and at night I do have my own publishing company. The newsletter I edit at work charges a mere $297 a year for subscriptions. So I am accustomed to putting out a quality product. So, there you have it. I am just an EDA who likes what his does for a living and enjoys Jewel, so I happy to contribute whatever I can to help her career. Hi everyone, A local radio station made a comment when talking about Atlanta, the games and the bombing. They said that "singer Jewel was in the nearby area of the bombing Saturday night." Can anyone else confirm something like this? Maybe they were mistaken or they may have been joking for some reason but it doesn't make sense as a joke. Otherwise, she's a big enough celebrity to note when she's at something as big as the Olympics. Adam Pieces of Jewel ------------------------------ From: "Matthew E. Milner" Date: Tue, 30 Jul 1996 10:08:05 -0400 Subject: Re: Dubbing question Hi all, Here's my take on the dubbing question. As has been said, the even offer is anything but even. That is a blatant ripoff. I'm not saying that the person who suggested is trying to rip someone off, but that's what it is. On the 2 for 1 blank trade. This is a standard trading procedure in some circles. I am new to this list, and like the idea that people are willing to trade for only return postage, but the idea of sending extra blanks is not THAT horrible. Someone I was working on a trade with was willing to make me 4 or 5 tapes worth and asked that I send an extra blank for their time. I was so happy that they would do this for me, that I gladly sent 2. This is just me, and I know not everyone can afford this (I'm a college student who really can't either) AFA the idea of it taking time, I can only speak for myself, but when I dub for people (I've traded on other lists) I take the time to listen to the tape (not that this is torture :-) ) before sending because my machine can be quirky sometimes. Also, as has been said, asking for extra should NEVER be done on a treed tape. If someone takes the time to make a tape for you for basically nothing, and you turn around and profit off it, that is wrong. I realize that the tape in question was not a treed tape, but just wanted to point out my opinions on that. One last note, I see no problem with a person asking if they thought it was fair, especially since they did not name names. If a person feels comfortable making a trade for whatever, then so be it, if they don't like the terms, they do not have to make the trade. All just my opinion, happy trading! Perhaps the people in the park had frisbees, and Jewel was trying to make a statement. Or perhaps she wanted to protest the "sleaziness" of the Olympics--after all she had some pretty harsh words about the games in her letter to the list. A few EDAs on Friday asked about Patti Smith because they were unfamiliar with her. Well, ironically enough there just happens to be a magazine out with a cover story on who else?. . .Patti Smith. I picked it up a Tower Records and the magazine is called "option" (Jul/Aug 96), I'd never noticed it before and picked it up just to see what it said about Patti. The article was nicely done seeing as the past couple years of Patti's life have been filled with mucho heartache and little happiness. Current publications include a prose poem called The Coral Sea and an album not released yet called Gone Again. I need HELP. I have a scanner at work but I don't know how to send images via the internet. I have a cute picture of Jewel and Michel on his cycle following the concert on Friday. If there is a quick way for me to make this photo available please email me individually with instructions. Thanks. Just a quick note about the term "freak". Unless you personally know Michael Stipe I would refrain from such rash judgements. Many artists choose a unique look to accent their music and others are a bit more conventional. I do not know Michael Stipe but I have met him and briefly talked to him, I think there is much more to the man than the media will ever know. If you were ever a fan of R.E.M. you would realize as others have pointed out that they always were known as a rock band. They have been releasing albums since Chronic Town in 1982 and have grown in popularity since the beginning due to the fact that they are constantly changing. If change is such a bad thing, why was Monster such a huge grossing tour? If you really do enjoy R.E.M. I would recommend waiting around for and album or two more, because with the rate of change they are known for I'm sure you will be able to find something you like again. I'm sure I've heard Hiranya comment that Jewel had uncommon control with her first album. And, it sounds like she's continuing that with the second. My feeling about second albums doing better is, 1. there is a ready audience base, and 2. record companies have trouble promoting first albums becaue the just aren't familiar with the artist. They are both the same versions as POY. It comes in a slip-case package with a slide-out tray for the CD. I don't often buy singles but I thought the packaging was unusual. It also has a strikingly beautiful color photo of Jewel's face on the cover. They had many copies so I assume it is common. Some of you have expressed there opinions of what the rules are for trading. All your opinions are different and all of you are right. The rule of supply and demand does bring out some greed.
